DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dormitories
« on: July 11, 2010, 01:55:26 am »
They usually end up sleeping in their own room if they went there for another reason, such as idling or collecting clothing. I'm not 100% sure because I've apparently had dwarves chose someone else's bed when their own was closer.

I'm not sure about it either but I'm going to look a bit... they all idle in a hall I created, so I don't think they'd be in their rooms for that. Some of them might be bringing in items...

Just build one or more huge legendary bedrooms with enough beds for everyone.

That's an interesting idea. Might be fun to try.

However, I have to say that my dwarves definitely do go to their rooms to sleep. They don't just go to the nearest bed.

Dwarves: none (no executions)

Goblins: arena (vs. my military)

It might be cool, though, to have some kind of pit / tower drop.. I'm just not sure how to rig that :o How do you throw a caged goblin into something? You can't 'build' a cage over a trap door, right?

This is particularly a problem when your Baron doesn't sleep in his Legendary Bedroom and instead decided to sleep in your mud barracks just because he happened to get tired while he was walking past it.  Then he gets a bad thought about how he *had* to sleep in a terrible bedroom.

Yeah, I'll have to keep an eye out for that. For me, it's still a problem that they don't claim bedrooms, either :/

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Body Parts

You need shells (from turtles).

Really? That's what that means? Thanks! I've had two dwarves that want 'body parts'. Didn't they say "shells" in 40d?

well from what ive read i dont want anything to do with the economy

That's up to you. I don't agree with the nay-sayers' view but don't bother with it if you don't want to try. It worked well enough in 40d and I expect I'll find out if anything has changed in 31.09.

dwarves cannot claim dorms, rooms are for individuals, dorms are shared.

I think you misunderstood: I have a bunch of rooms that are unclaimed and yet dwarves are still opting to sleep in the dormitory (which generates a 'slept without a proper room' thought). They should be claiming those available rooms instead of just going into the dormitory.

i have over double 80 dwarves (180+)

no dungeon master, no tax collector

Oh... hmm. Are you missing any nobles? Have you been giving money to the dwarven civs?

My dwarves aren't claiming rooms since I built a dormitory. Is anyone else experiencing this? It seems like a bug.

I like the economy, except for the lack of coin-stacking. I haven't experienced it in the new version but I'm getting close to 80 dwarves now... we'll see. I'm not sure the system helps with replacing old clothing but it might.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Organize / Wait for Combat Training

So, 'no orders' seems to effectively put the squad on 'inactive' -- that is, the military dwarves are now listed in their civilian jobs. Just to be sure ... that's what I want?

Training is broken.  It just doesn't work as intended.  Like it has been said you have to ignore the scheduled training for now.   However, Individual training is also broken. Normally once a dwarf starts inividual training, they won't ever do anything else again (labor wise,  they will still fight eat and drink). But Individual training is the best way to train up military dwarfs that doesn't involve fighting.

All this info is right there on the wiki and in this forum.

Thanks, I'm just trying to understand this and the wiki hasn't helped entirely. "Setting Dwarves to train will result in them idling instead of training." This, for example, is confusing because my dwarves don't look idle - they watch/perform demonstrations and they do individual training. The ranged squad I created now has a bow dwarf who was "leading archery demonstration" whilst the other was "watching archery demonstration".

Edit:
"The Arsenal Dwarf serves the role of quartermaster; without him your dwarves will be unable to change their equipment" .. I guess that answers my question about weapons!

Suggestions:

1. (Already suggested) Try another area
2.  Try reaching higher societal levels.. for example, where you have to mint money and eventually get a king.

As for #1, you should be able to see if hostile civs are in the area when you choose a spot. And haunted, terrifying might be a good area to try.

I've tried "train" too, with the barracks marked as a training area. I think it's working but they don't use the weapons I want... Well, the first one did (wooden training sowrd). How do you get them to switch weapons? I changed their designation but do I need the arsenal dwarf?

Yeah, it means you need to plant more Pig Tails(or any other thread plant) and process them at the farmer's workshop.

Thanks. What does the 15000 mean? :o
