DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't find my original 7
« on: September 18, 2016, 02:49:10 am »
I want to build a hall commemorating my original 7 dwarves, but I started the fort I was on a while ago and didn't write down their names. Is there a way to identify which dwarves have been in your fortress the longest?

1. Make a copy of your game (everything in the DF folder)
2. Run the copy
3. Retire your fort
4. Enter "legends" mode and look up your fort

Legends will show the founding group and list your seven dwarves, as the first inhabitants.

Thanks for copying the URL.  The less cryptic version is http://www.vimeo.com/dwarfmoot/2016

Toady retweeted TinyPirate's announcement, too.  So, things are out in the wild.  :)

Now, I need to try and get a few pictures up on the site...

I'll be uploading all the videos from the moot in the next couple of days (intros, talk/Q&A).  I am thinking Vimeo.  If you got any good photos of the event, please send me a PM, so we can potentially post them on the site.

We're out of tickets, which means we have over 100 people planning to be there!

Also, please check out the article about DF and the event at Seattle Weekly.

We're less than a week away, now!

There are only a handful of tickets left.  If you've been thinking of joining, I'd recommend registering sooner rather than later!

Mifki?

Whoops!  That's what I get for searching for "VM" and not "VM" *and* "virtual machine".  Thanks for clarifying! :)

Here's the quote, for reference:

I partly agree (however I'm using XP in a virtual machine to build and test all my plugins because, well, with what I use it for, absolutely no point in wasting memory/disk space for anything newer, especially 64bit).
However, DF is a special game, it doesn't require or use any fancy technologies/system features, and it's just as old as XP. So the question really is whether Toady will be willing to drop support for XP for no reason other than to simplify development, and possibly upset some long-time players. Btw, don't also forget 32bit Linux users.

But how else can I get glamour photos???

Take them live, and in person, at the Dwarfmoot, of course

I saw Capntastic recite "Dwarf Fortress and Nothing More".  This is delightful!

I can sympathize with wanting to keep a smaller footprint for your VM when testing windows stuff, I had to use a VM layer for my proctored testing software (which amused the hell out of me the entire time) because the software itself was windows only, and yeah even 7 could get hoggish in a VM.

I was also very happy to get that crap, even in a sterile contained VM form, off my system. Filthy habit really, gateway to stuff like facebook and tablet games addiction, and from there the hard stuff: crack.

Where was I, oh yeah, VM testing footprints are a thing, but again not a strong vote in favor of 32 bit support.

Who are all your VM-related comments directed to?  I don't really understand your point.

I'm the only one who mentioned VMs in this thread and no one has mentioned Windows VMs or "VM testing".  I have a 32-bit Linux VM, on a 64-bit host.  That VM is dedicated to DF and as I said, I am ready to switch it over to 64-bit Linux, when DF is 64-bit.

A true master chef would include finely minced [dwarven] beer.

That would put it over the top, for sure.

You mean....it's not going to be a tavern-style gorge fest? It's going to have chefs and...and...entrées.

For shame. :P

Oh, pshaw.  You can have an entrée and still have a gorge-fest.  And a cook is necessary to get those *plump helmet roasts* up to quality for maximum happy thoughts. ;)

I am interested in what DF players use to play DF, especially for the whole "32/64 bit compatibility" thing. I will make polls here and post the results, then make a new one (maybe).

First poll: 64 bit or 32 bit?

I play via SSH (text) on a 32-bit Linux VM.  The hardware is 64-bit, so I could upgrade the OS when that becomes relevant.

Hey, about how many people have preregistered so far?

We're close to 70 people and the majority will be at the dinner.  I'm going to post the menu, soon and I expect the chef will want people to let me know if they want the vegan/vegetarian option for the entrée.
