In advance worldgen params, turn minimum oceans and partial oceans to 0. You'll still end up with 1 or 2, but they will be a great deal smaller.

My current fortress, Glazeoiled, has purple unholy dust clouds that cause extreme blistering on every internal and external body part. Limbs, lungs, eyes, brains, fingers, guts. All blistered. Everything thats been touched by the cloud dies in about 15 seconds. And it leaves little piles of dust everywhere that kills anything not wearing shoes. It wouldn't be so bad except for all the necromancers...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Towers are indeed !!FUN!!
« on: September 27, 2012, 03:14:13 pm »
Having gotten bored with my favorite fortress, Goldflash. I deemed her dead to FPS death and moved on to something a bit more challenging. I genned a 4000 year old world so I could get a good selection of towers. It also has the interesting bonus of having no elves. None. The civ wasn't added during world gen for some reason. Instead, it added extra goblin civs. I embarked on a beautifully barren hunk of terrifying badlands next to three necro towers.

I have these lovely purple unholy dust clouds that cause full body and organ blistering. Anything hit by it get blisters on outside, as well as all internal organs. Death occurs within 15 seconds of exposure. Being next to tropical savannas there all kinds of buggers wandering into my bit of land. Which all then die when the clouds come. The first time Glazeoiled fell was due to my failure of not cleaning up all these corpses. Giant cockatiels  can still fly when they become zombie giant cockatiels.

I reclaimed with some dwarves wearing copper with hammers. Managed to clean the place up, and build airtight defenses. Airtight defenses only work when you remember to shut ALL the doors though....
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Time to reclaim again.

Yep that's the one. Although the added 'fix' of vermin and cages just leads to them escaping elven caravans upon arrival. Which is no problem, since I never had a use for the things anyway.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Framerate

My pop cap is 140 so I can still get a king. At 12 years into the fortress, I am down to about 20-24 fps. At this point, I turned off the central stair waterfall, and began a stone and XXclothingXX destroying program. After all the useless stone and crap had been delt with, I'm up to around 35 fps. I may turn temperature off next after I get enough stone from my obsidian farm to last a while.

I also keep a large reservoir of magma near my fort, as my fps drops to around 15 when filling it with the 160 zlvl magma stack.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Nobody ever likes breastplates.

Make room for new dwarves. Kill off anyone who likes cats, socks, or wood. Then make more room by killing of anyone who was friends with anyone who liked cats, socks, or wood. Best kill of the family of those friends as well. Preventive measure.

If I sell a coffin with a corpse in it...will it cause a ghost to haunt the fortress? If not, my fortress's main export is going to be masterwork obsidian coffins; complete with with body!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to deal with extra armour racks?
« on: September 20, 2012, 06:16:59 pm »
Make minecart shotguns. Use the armor racks as ammo in the carts.

Well, my current has a lot of firsts as far as design goes. I made a great big spiral ramp for the fortress, complete with a waterfall flowing down the middle. The inside edges near the waterfall are even exposed to sunlight to help prevent cave adaptation. Well, I've only ever used gravity waterfall before this. Building under aquafiers or rivers and channeling. This time, I made an elaborate pump stack to bring water to above my fortress and rain it down the center of my spiral staircase.

I didn't make so much as a waterfall as a downward shooting watercannon. I turn it on and immediately about 15 dwarves are caught in the waterblast and blown down center 15 z's to a splatty, watery grave.

You don't have to fix the bug yourself, someone uploaded a fixed exe that fixes the patrol problem. I'm using it now, I just can't remember where its from at the moment. (blame the nyquil)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your Best Artifacts
« on: September 20, 2012, 02:41:05 pm »
Well, by utilizing the 'forbid items during construction bug' I've been accumulating artifact iron clothing. I'm outfitting my champion with artifact iron robe, iron cloak, iron longskirt, and then steel armor on top of that and an artifact shield. Then I shall let him take on sieges single handed.

Attention: All past, present, and future Urist McFishermen,

The fortress of Goldflash is in the middle of a terrifying rocky wasteland. There is no water. None. Therefore, there are no fish of any sort for you to catch. If you insist on coming to Goldflash, you will be left outside where you witness firsthand our beautiful and deadly cursed ash clouds that blow across the desert.

I'm pretty fond of terrifying deserts. My soldiers would ride on giant desert scorpions. Mmmm. I could kill so very many elves. So many.
