I don't worry about smelting. I have so much goblin crap that I get from the yearly sieges I just ask the dwarven caravan to bring armor. I usually have more then enough to barter for steel, or at least bismuth.

Even so, I prefer to let my traps do the killing

Confined spaces make animals fight each other any your dwarves. That is normal. You can use it to your advantage, or just stuff all your animals in a cage

And if so, what can I do about it?

1: Clutter.

Often, I find lots of clutter around my fort. Weapons, armor/clothing, that the dwarves refuse to pick up and stockpile.

2: Forgotten beasts

If you do an abandon, and you had a forgotten beast or two on the map at abandon, you will find the forgotten beast on the surface on reclaim, even if the caverns had been sealed off completely.

Strange, While it is an option for constructions, my mason still refuses to use it in the mason workshop

When you reclaim, everything you had gets scattered across ALL z levels. I never had much problem with migrants. There are a fair number of things you can do.

First, make sure you embark with enough food and drink. It is sounding like your not bringing nearly enough.

Second, bring a stoneworker, assign him to a craftdwarf shop, and pump out crafts, then take all those crafts and trade with the caravans for all the food they have.

As for your problem, it sounds like you hit an aquifer. If your having enough problems keeping fed, then why did you even embark in a place with an aquifer?

My mason is ankle deep in obsidian stone, all around the workshop, everywhere, and he prefers to not work at all instead of working with the obsidian. It is not on the economic list, and it is not forbidden. In fact, I made all other stone forbidden.

What is wrong here?

Broker is throwing a tantrum!
Trade Depot Destroyed by broker.

A caravan was in at the time. The trading must have gone really bad.

(EPA= Enviroment Elf Protection Agency?)

Good call, but the elves are not the only sufferers. More like the elven run EPA. Humans would not care about the land.

Have any of you run into problems with water pushing enemies through fortifications? It has happened to me more then once.

I redesigned the trap, Now nothing gets out alive >:)  I still need a few minor tweaks here and there, and the only real problem I have now is the river stays frozen 1/3 of the year (Not that anything that falls in the trap can get out.

Now I just need to figure out a way to manage if another building destroyer shows up. I can't rely on him staying put long enough for the drowning trap.
