DF Gameplay Questions / Dont need no helmet!
« on: May 04, 2013, 12:17:17 pm »
So my military in this fortress is of the copper variety. I've assigned them a copper armament, and made it. I have 10 copper helms sitting in my forges. My [m]ilitary->[e]quipment screen says the dwarves have their helmets, but clearly they do not. I've taken them off their uniforms and readded them, forbid and unforbid, and while they are still claimed [even after and during the forbidding.], they still refuse to actually put them on. Thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Backup Weapons?
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:32:21 pm »
Can dwarves have backup weapons? Would it do them any good? Lately I've been reading Gates of Fire, which is about the Spartan's battle at Thermopylae, and it's got me to thinking about a fortress. Small, mainly for fighting. The army would use spears and shields, of course. Armored. But the Spartans, along with their shield, have the Xiphos sword. I know DF doesn't have quite that particlar sword, but it does have swords. My question is, if I assign to the uniform both a spear AND a sword, would the dwarf use both? the first one? neither? I've never seen a dwarf get disarmed, but could it happen? would he then use his second weapon?

DF Gameplay Questions / Finding a Young Vampire
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:45:17 pm »
Alright, so I know all [read: most] about how to find old vampires. Best being that they have a bazillion 'former member' tags, bunch of children, etc. My current problem seems to be that, among the two vampires I know about an currently have defending my caverns, I have a third vampire skulking among my populace. I've checked everyone's [read: some] of their thoughts and preferences,  but I see none that either don't have food/drink/sleep thoughts, or any with a million kids or former citizenships. My world is only 251 years old, so a lot of my dwarves are fairly young. I've concluded that this vampire, whomever it may be, is clearly someone young.

My question is, how the hell do I find out who it is? I've had a legendary miner, a great woodcutter, a master axedwarf and some random craftsdwarf fall victim to this bastard. And I think he bit my speardwarf too, because he's wandering around wounded and [Pale] but has no injuries whatsoever. So I'm tired of his nonsense and I want him dead.

DF Gameplay Questions / The Nightwalkers, Vampire Brigade
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:51:42 pm »
So, my fortress has had two of these bloodsucking bastages, and I've found out who they are. I have no justice systm set up yet, so they arent locked up or beaten with hammers, but i currently have them assigned to their own sqaud ''The Nightwalkers'' and stationed on a corner of the map.

My question is this: I know vampires are supposedly tougher than average. Is there a way to keep them around, in their own squad, and use them for combat, WITHOUT endangering the rest of my populace? I normally wouldn't worry, but I have a legendary weaponsmith/armorsmith to worry about here.

But the thought of having a first-wave Night Assault Squad is just neat.

DF General Discussion / Dwarf is a Dwarf
« on: July 02, 2012, 04:54:40 pm »
So, after so long of playing with the default tileset for DF, I've decided to give one of these tilesets a go. I don't know which one to get, or where to get it, but google can handle that if I could get a name. Which tilesets would you recommend? I know there's one that a bunch of people on the forums use.. I see it in screenshots from time to time.

DF Gameplay Questions / Friendly Titans
« on: June 28, 2012, 01:59:15 pm »

Oh no, a woodpecker! My walls are useless! Wait.. I feel.. kindness.. and giving... maybe... maybe we can... be friends?

Are there friendly titans? This one makes me feel.. uneasy.

Edit: For reference, her title is ''The Helpful Sack Twilight.''  Such an odd name and aura for something that began drilling into dwarf skulls.

DF Gameplay Questions / The camera loves you baby[fix'd]
« on: June 27, 2012, 09:57:58 am »
This isn't really a problem or anything, but it definitely suprised me. I was busy building the floor of my castle when, I guess by some strange stroke up weirdness, I went to check was a craftsdwarf was doing outside the walls when suddenly I made the camera follow him. I don't know how I did it and I couldn't [easily] figure out how to recreate my screw up.

What did I do?

Nevermind.

DF Gameplay Questions / Reinforcements? You are the reinforcements.
« on: June 27, 2012, 12:17:16 am »
Quick question.
Right now I'm running a fortress with a population cap of 100. With this I normally run 2 squads of military dwarves on a full 24/7 training, no breaks. However, sometimes I get a dwarf that has a too-military name for him to be any kind of hauler, so I have a third ''reserve'' force that I don't make active. They still equip themselves and train, but aren't regulary infantry. They're just there so that when groups 1 or 2 lose troops, I have guys that can replace them that aren't fresh out of the box. My question is this; Normally for my reserve force I give no damns about what their labors are. However, I got one guy who's a halfway decent doctor [Field Medic, go!] and I was wondering if he will still do his doctor-ly duties despite being in an inactive military unit? Will his random training sessions take priority over patching up Urist McBrokenface?

DF Gameplay Questions / Fight like a dwarf, ye coward[Fixed]
« on: June 23, 2012, 07:02:13 pm »
So, my fortress was recently taken down by a bad case of the ''Oh god their body parts wont quit moving.''

So I made an adventurer and went to investigate, when I came across a necromancer tower. I killed something like 60-70 undead, and started making my way up. I got to the second floor, to the stairs up... and can't use them. Why is this? Is that fool locking his hatch or something?

Nevermind. Apparently the other two hundred zombies were blocking the hatch.

DF Gameplay Questions / The Golden Age
« on: June 20, 2012, 12:21:50 pm »
So I keep genning smaller worlds with medium-long histories, just to get something to play around in, and every single one of them always hits The Golden Age fairly early. I've done a little reading and found that this means there are no wars going on, and no huges beasts. Does this mean if I accept it, I won't be seiged by goblins, I won't get suprise touched by a Forgotten Beast, and Necromancers will never come try to borrow a cup of sugar?

Edit:
Semi-related question; is there any way to speed up world generation? I thought I had a fairly decent laptop, but it gets to about year 150 and slows to a virtual crawl.

Time to go for a delightful stroll. These dwarves are above ground, too. A tribe of eternally blood soaked dwarves. Time to have some fun.

DF Gameplay Questions / Out of Grass
« on: June 19, 2012, 12:12:39 pm »
Question: Does grass regrow in mountain biomes? My village sits on one and I just noticed a patch of furrowed dirt that hasn't regrown in the several years it's been there. This wouldn't be a problem, by my yak pasture is looking pretty bare, and -that- worries me. Clay loam is the dirt, if that matters.

DF Gameplay Questions / Training Spears - Absurdly Cruel?
« on: June 19, 2012, 09:46:28 am »
So my fortress is above ground, wood only. My military wears leather and bone, and uses training spears. My military commander has an iron spear the dwarves traded me, because he's the military commander and has that privelege. I've noticed, however, that the training spears seem to be by far the more deadly. Because I'm on the surface of a flat area, I generally get to see combat when it happens. Wolverine Men attack all the time. While my commander is all about skewering like a boss, my other troops are more about getting as much pain as possible out of the target. While they generally kill in 1 or 2 hits, they -constantly- slam every single tooth out of their opponent first. I just watched them kill a wolverine man and about 15+ teeth exploded into the area around him right before he died.

So are training spears supposed to be like this? Even when my other forts had Hammer/Macedwarves I didn't see this many body parts.

Also, why is there a 'decorate with ivory/tooth' option in the craftdwarves shop, but they won't use all these 100+ teeth I have laying around? I'm just gonna start dumping the things.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stop Touching My Wood
« on: June 19, 2012, 09:31:56 am »
I thought I was fixing it, but I managed to break a big pile of wood. You see, I was making wood crafts and noticed my dwarves running up into the leveled forests to get wood instead of using the huge stockpile right beside the shops. Thinking I'd put a stop to that nonsense, I ordered the pile to give to those two shops. Then they just stopped taking it from there period. Stopped crafting due to ''no logs'' despite the pile being full, and there was even still logs in the forest. Well, plains now I guess. But anyways, I went to the pile's settings and removed the give orders, didn't work.I then deleted the stockpile entirely. Didn't work. Then I made a new wood stockpile, and they just ignored the hell out of the wood sitting there in the old pile. It's accessible, it's not forbidden. Why won't they touch my wood?

DF Gameplay Questions / Boner Armor
« on: June 17, 2012, 11:15:03 am »
Figured that would get your attention.

Anyways, I am living the surface dwarf lifestyle while I take a break from my stressful 'main' fortress, just seeing how long I can survive without precious commodities such as walls, stone, or an end of the world machine. Right now I'm trying to design a decent uniform for the military. Nothing over the top, I'm not a fan of stacking 30 breastplates onto one dwarf, just something that, in my mind's eye, doesn't look retarded. I opted for a combination of Bone and Leather armor.

Leather leather armor [wut]
Leather cloak
Bone Helm
Leather hood
Bone Greaves
Bone Gauntlets
Leather high boots
shield
training spear [i wish I could make bone spears, but alas.]

Anyways, while in my head this looks neat, the problem I'm having is about assigning the bone impliments. I understand that they are considered 'metal' as far as uniforms go, but I fear this will conflict with the fact that I don't want to use -actual- metal. Since, instead of ''bone helm'' I have to choose ''metal helm'', how will I solve the issue that I'm sure will pop up the second I stab a goblin to death to was wearing a copper helmet? Is there a way to assign them bone specifically without having to actually choose the individual helmet? My experienced with that ended up assigning the same Silver Scourge to four different dwarves, and not knowing it at first.

Second, thoughts on my uniform? Anything I can add, you think, without it seeming like my dwarves are wearing eighty-three different animals in breastplates alone?
