DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Map with no ore
« on: March 24, 2011, 06:56:09 am »
Well, to be fair, unless you have telepathic dwarves, there shouldn't be a way of knowing what is there until you dig for it. I think it gives more information than it should, so im grateful for that it gives.

Yeah, I was a human from the town nearby. The other goblins in his group were all hostile, he helped me kill them after joining my party.

Okay, so, after rereading, I think I understand. You want to know whats in the rock before you dig there, right? The mining industry doesn't exactly work like that, as they mine a little to find out whats there, then start a big mine to get out what they find[Alaskan Gold Rush, ftw]. It's possible for a mining company to set up a site and find nothing[or very little.].

Half the fun in the game is using what you're given and making the best of it. Aquifer? Punch through it like an angry god. No metal ore? Stone crafts and trade for it. No stone? Woodland dwarves. Though, a world gen option was added to increase the frequency of metal if you don't want to work with the default, but that takes a little of the fun away.

And if you don't want realism, Minecraft is that way. =====>

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Running Out of Megabeasts

I'm begining to lose faith. Just fought a savannah titan, this one shot fire. I took a fireball in the face, slashed it's leg off, it fell, my guys all crowded around to try and take my glory, I decapitated the thing and checked my injuries...

Not even a scratch, from a fireball to my face. How are they supposed to kill my henchmen when they can't even touch us? Well, most of us. Two of my guys are walking around dragging their intestines.

Well, I have a posse of like 10 guys with me, all soldiers [What can I say, when I was used to bandits and it went ''Go take on a titan'', I got nervous.] and they seem pretty adept at murdering everything. Infact, I've only last hit a titan and the Roc. They stole the rest of my kills. Glorywhores. :(

Is there a way to kill them off without doing it myself? Using stong, legendary beasts is apparently not going to work.

So I finally have an adventurer that can do some quests where it only freezes occasionally instead of all the time. I've done a series of quests and now im killing megabeasts. First goblins an dhuman bandits, then an ettin.. then a titan. then another titan... then a roc.. and just then, a dragon. If I keep this up, winning, will I eventually run out of megabeasts, and not see any when I come back in fortress mode?

Edit: And now a hydra. I don't remember these things being NEARLY this common in fortress mode.

So, I'm walking around with my one surviving fodder party member, when I'm ambushed by a group of goblins. Well, the first two I meet are a hammerman and human pikeman. I rush the goblin, but he doesn't attack me, and even helps me kill the Pikeman. Then I talk to him, and he's friendly. Then I recruited him into my party.

I can't even think of a proper question for this. Just... What?

DF Gameplay Questions / High Boots
« on: March 23, 2011, 05:46:18 am »
So after the whole Dragonwork debacle, I've started a new fortress. I have a steel industry going, punched through the aquifer like an angry god looking for sacrifices, I haven't hit a cavern yet but I've mined 60 zlevels down. Everything's going fine, but when I went to set up my dwarves uniform, I saw that it said high boots were foreign. After checking, I noticed I couldn't make them either.

I guess this is normal, but why? In dragonwork, all my soldiers wore high boots because I could make them. Why can't I now? Or if this is normal, why could I then?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Letters on the top left
« on: March 23, 2011, 05:01:10 am »
The red [C] means combat.

The teal [ S ] means sparring.

The green [H] means hunting.

They're different reports. A letter in the corner means a report you haven't read has happened, such as new combat, sparring, etc. To view the reports, hit 'r', and it'll bring up the list of them.

So, I loaded up my work to start playing again, and when I got on, three of my dwarves immediately became recruits. One being my second miner. I found this odd, because I have no squads, no military to speak of, no milita commander... yet I now have three soldiers. One my miner. Which annoys me. What should I do to fix this?

Nevermind, I had to force them into a squad twice before it randomly went away.

Wait, so, he IS decorating with bone, just not the bone you want him to use?

I'm confused.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Equipping woes...
« on: March 23, 2011, 02:32:38 am »
I'm not sure if that just because actual sparring is relatively uncommon (most 'training' seems to be demos or individual), or if the training combat was truly improved to reflect non-lethal intent, but either way there is little need to worry about sparring injuries for now.

Sparring doens't injure. Only 2 dwarves at a time [in a squad] will spar, but they 'lightly tap the target' instead of wailing on them. I keep, in the begining, squads down to 2-3 dwarves, so I cna have several sparring matches going at once.
