DF Gameplay Questions / Re: You have found..

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED.

*cough* but yeah seriously, I love it when I get on and see this under my 'new posts' page. This is probably my favourite thing I've ever done, and it pleases me immensely that people still read and enjoy it. Though, I was unaware that the curious structures had been removed. I thought they were just absurdly rare. Though, you could always build your own underground pyramid and THEN breach it. I always make a self-sustaining fort with a military capable of facesmashing goblins like it was their job [spoiler alert: it is.] so I have to force a failure in my forts. Once I've had my fun, I'll crack open the Nether just to see how many of the bastards I can send back to hell before I fall.

I love this game, this thread, and all of you. <3

I rarely venture out of Gameplay Discussion and Dwarf Mode Discussion, so.. 1/10.

Also I'd like to point out this turned into a ''How well I know you..'' from ''How well known are you.'' thread.

Every so often I'll get back on here, answer a question or ask one of my own, and every so often I'm always drawn back to this thread. It just makes me smile whenever I read through the comments, and see the people who've complimented me on playing or more likely, my writing. I'm glad I can still, three years later, show people that Dwarf Fortress can be awesome in more ways than one. Thanks guys. <3

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: cinnabar
« on: February 25, 2014, 01:40:24 pm »
All stone is pretty heavy, but dwarves can move them no problem. They'll just be a little slow. If you want them to move them with wheelbarrows, you have to make a stockpile for stone [Alternately, one that accepts only Cinnabar.] and with w[?] set it to use wheelbarrows. The default is 1, the maximum is 3. Your dwarves will then automaticallu put 3 wheelbarrows in the stockpile and use them to transport stone. The upside is, they move at maximum speed while using the wheelbarrow. The downside is only 3 stones can be moved at a time. Since you only have 2 offending stones, this shouldn't be a problem. However, I believe that merchant wagons will simply roll right over them. It's boulders they won't go over, for some reason, and those need to be smoothed over.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Trading with elves
« on: February 25, 2014, 11:15:43 am »
You could just take what you want from the elves, they don't do anything about it.

You could also just kill the elves and take what you want from them, they don't put up much of a fight.

Third option would involve magma'ing the elves and claiming whatever doesn't burn [Hint: Nothing. None of their stuff won't burn.]

DF Gameplay Questions / Named Weapons/Shields
« on: February 24, 2014, 01:25:25 pm »
Recently I've upgraded my dwarves. They were decked out entirely in Iron, and have been training in it for most of the.. 8 or 9 years this Fortress has been operational. Then I found some flux stone while mining iron, and decided I would start churning out some steel. My first squad [of 3] have been outfitted in their new steel gear, and as a result dumped their old stuff for the other two squads to fight over. However, this meant they dropped their shields and weapons, nearly all of which had been named. This is bothering me, as it's cluttering my fortress. I tried to create a stopckpile that accepts artifact level iron weapons and shields, but the items are ignored. I checked them, they don't seem to be owned, so I'm not entirely sure what the problem is.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to defend against sieges?
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:48:01 pm »
If dwarfs had no metal armor or there were a goblin master lasher, then this is expexted.

I remember the first time I tried to use the military. 5 or 6 goblins showed up, I had a military 20 strong. I was like aw yiss. Let's do this. A couple seconds later I was watching the 5 or 6 goblins march over 20 corpses to slaughter my civilians. I couldn't FATHOM why they'd been wiped out so easily. Then it dawned on me that I never gave them armor. or a shield. or a weapon. So basically I kicked 20 civilians into a meat grinder. Ah, those were the good old days.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Artifact Crutch?
« on: February 14, 2014, 01:34:18 pm »
works just like a regular one, but the dwarf may become happier from holding it
Why would a dwarf become happier from using an artifact crutch? Dwarf Fortress does not define any thoughts about that sort of thing.

I feel like the first sentence was unnecessary. No need to be a jerk to someone, just inform them it doesn't work that way.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Atom Smashing and covering stairs
« on: February 07, 2014, 07:12:52 pm »
Yes, a draw bridge falling on things will smash them into oblivion, erasing them completely form the game. Yes, you can simply floor over stairs and they won't be able to be entered from there anymore. And yes, cage traps will catch most anything, though you'll need alot to stop an entire seige, and certain things are trap immune, like titans and FBs. They will walk over your trap and smash your door. However, termite nests, like bumblebee hives, shouldn't stop the building of a wall.. cemented by the fact that you put a door over it. I think that might have gotten rid of it and now you can wall over it, which you should've been able to do from the begining.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bugged Merchants[Solved]
« on: February 04, 2014, 04:05:34 pm »
I may have broken my merchants. My current fortress is going to be made of iron, assuming I have enough on the map, so of course I need temporary shelter. I made this small and out of wood. On one side is a mountain, and the other a river. So, I placed a trade depot above and below my walled in area. Then the merchants came.

At first I was like cool, but then I noticed they came from two directions. The merchants went to the north depot, and the wagons moved towards the south. Then Kea Men came. I moved some things to the depot and waited for them to finish setting up. But the Kea kept making one of the merchants run around in terror. I removed some of my walls so the wagons could get to the north depot.

Then comes my problems. The wagons never moved, even once they had a clear 3x3 minimum path to the other depot. Annoyed, I decided to trade without the wagons. Then I noticed the north depot now said ''No merchants are trading.''

I checked my announcements, they never said they were leaving. I saw them there, and the wagons still unmoving. Then I got the announcement that they would be leaving soon, so I gave up. It was after I got the message that they left that I noticed it was bugged harder. They still stand in the depot, and the wagons havent moved. Somehow a trader is down south, but he too isn't moving. They're just standing around. I don't want them to go berserk and me have to kill them, and I certainly don't want all their garbage. Is there anything I can do to fix them?

[Nevermind. Deconstructing the second depot made them all pack up and leave without losing their stuff. Proooooobably should've tried that first.]

I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but why on EARTH is the button to look at preferences 'm'? Every time I try to open my military tab I keep getting that damn screen, and I have to hit it about 800 times before it finally brings up the military screen instead of showing me what my dwarfs prefer. It infuriates me, cause I couldn't care less how many beards like clear glass, but being able to equip and fix my military is pretty vital.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Making the Bloodguard
« on: January 31, 2014, 04:42:25 pm »
Evidently bronze, brass, and copper are sometimes called "red metals," even though they don't really look red, so you could go with bronze. And of course, give everyone a red cloak and hood to wear over their armor.
I hadn't even thought of this. I could just dye the cloaks and hood. Is there a way to encrust and dye just these items? I know that it's chosen at random..

DF Gameplay Questions / Making the Bloodguard
« on: January 30, 2014, 05:00:18 pm »
My newest fortress is made entirely of Cinnabar blocks. A bloodred fortress in honor of the God of Blood. I intended to also armor my military in red armor, but when I look at dyes... I'm not sure it's possible. Is there any way I can dye armor that isn't on the wiki? Encrust is with rubies [assuming i find any]? I havent found a way, and it's seriously hurting my need for a Bloodguard.

You also might want to forbid the cloth bins to be sure that your dwarfs collect the plants first, before they go bad.

Alternitively drop 1 tile food stockpile on top of the food.  This will keep it from rotting till your haulers have room in the schedule for it. Might still loose some to vermin but much beter than it rotting.  To get the stuff inside either link it with a give setting to a food stockpile or just remove the stockpile designation when your haulers are not busy.

Sweet Armok's bearded nipples. You're a genius.
