DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stockpile Mysteries
« on: June 15, 2012, 07:22:02 pm »
I don't place the stockpiles where there is already stuff. I dug most of the piles out in dirt area where there were no rocks, and my metal bar stockpile is on an empty expanse of constructed stone floors.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stockpile Mysteries
« on: June 15, 2012, 06:53:34 pm »
Uh oh Scooby, looks like we got a mystery.

This has happened more than once. The first time I brushed it off as a fluke, cause when I mentioned it here no one said anything. Now, this is the fourth time it's happened [Food, Cage, Stone block, and now Metal Bar] and it's beginning to get on my nerves. I'll make a stockpile, make sure all the right stuff is turned on and nothing important is disabled... but it won't get used. I had a goblin ina  cage sit outside for the better part of a year before I noticed he wasn't in my makeshift prison. I had food go bad because I didn't notice my food stockpile wasn't being filled. What's the deal? Are stockpiles just randomly bugged now for some reason?

Edit; Now they're taunting me. They put a bin in the stockpile, an empty one, but are still ignoring the several hundred metal bars sitting a few feet away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tribal Dwarves
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:48:30 am »
Wooden training axes cut trees in 34.x also, but if you play a version after the clothing requirement was introduced you are going to have to either farm or raise animals.  There won't be enough leather from hunting to clothe everyone.  Also, I am uncertain what the status is these days on fishing and hunting, but I don't think you can live on just those as food supplies.  Nor might you have enough bone crafts to trade for food, leather, and cloth without animals domesticated.  I guess you could allow the eating of sentients and live on dead goblins.  Cannibal tribe!   :P

I keep all my dwarves clothed with whatever I pull off dead goblins. I just unforbid it, and they take it as needed. Whatever's left gets sold to the caravans. They stay clothed, and I get trade goods I didn't have to work for. It works out rather well.

also I have no idea if this would work, but.. small pits covered with retractable bridges, wait til the enemy is over them and throw one lever that opens them all? will need an engineer which isn't really tribal...unless it's like the temple from indiana jones. I'd consider those tribals engineers.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Migrant waves & baby waves ignore Pop cap
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:37:27 am »
Thats the only place you should need to. You get a wave as long as you're under the cap. If a wave puts you at the cap, you may still have a wave already inbound, but after that they will stop until you drop below the cap. Then you may drop to 119 and get a wave of 10 dwarves. Hasn't happened to me often, but it has happened. I normally just make them haulers or furnace operators or just toss them in a throw away military.

Consider them.... Test Subjects.

Or, to compensate, always set your cap about 10 below what you actually want. Like, if you want a population of about 120, then set your cap to 110.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Decreases Siege/Increased Ambush

I think the 80 population thing is megabeasts, because my population is currently 54 with a cap of 60 [Damn ambushes..], and in previous versions I was rocking out with sieges with a population of like 20. And my fortress wealth is currently in excess of 1.5 million.

So the title, is this a thing? Cause My fortress, first since I picked the game up again, is nearly 8 years old and I haven't seen a single siege, however I've gotten ambushes almost regularly, and it's never just one, it's always 2-5 groups, sometimes lead by elves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Misplacing Dwarves
« on: June 13, 2012, 10:08:32 pm »
Well, after figuring out who it was, and putting him in a squad that did not involve beating my dwarves' heads in, I dug a little cave out, stationed him in it, put up a door and locked it, then built two stone walls outside of it so he isn't going anywhere. Then I removed him from the squad. He can sit in his little cave and rot for all I care, or until I come back on an adventurer after toady impliments digging in adventure mode, so I can set the hungry beast free.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stormbuilder learns how to play
« on: June 13, 2012, 11:03:50 am »
No, only grazing animals need to be on grass. Turkeys, chickens, dogs, cats, etc don't graze, so it doesn't matter where they are. And as for pig tails.. you could, I suppose. I don't worry about it, but if you wanted to you could. I generally just take the elve's cloth as Swordpoint and make whatever I need from that. Bastards tend to bring a lot of the stuff.

Well, I normally start with a male and female turkey. I lock them in a room with a nestbox, and their first clutch that hatches becomes my egg farm. Works pretty well, and it's cheap.

Seeds, I go with plump helmet [spring, winter.] and cave wheat [summer, autumn]. I don't cook them, bu I brew them. This gives dwarves a little food, and a small variety to their drink.

As far as sites go... I just pick a spot and go. The best way to learn to deal with problems is to close your eyes, lower your head, and rush right into them. The Dwarven Way.

Do you designate bedrooms and then allow dwarves to claim them as necessary? See who hasn't claimed one yet.

This worked, and was rather easy. It's one of my soldiers it looks like.. a Marksdwarf. He has a huge list [comparitively] to the older dwarves of previous factions, though he doesn't say anything about being thirsty. I think I'll give him his own squad and shoot him into space.

Edit:

WHAT?!  I figured out who he was, put him in his own squad and sent him to a small cave I recently dug, with the intention of sealing him up and dealing with him later. However, I noticed after a moment he wasnt responding to the station command. Suddenly, the little combat 'C' popped up, and so I checked... he's randomly beating the hell out of one of my carpenters! What the hell, man. Does he know he's been found out? What is going on?!
Nevermind. The squad I amde was captain of the guard. He started doling out punishment. Viciously.

Vampires don't drink booze. Check that.

Also, vampires are made of wood, can float and weigh the same as a duck. Or was that witches?

How do I check this? Just go through and see if they all have ''needs alcohol to get through the working day''?

So I just checked all my dwarves one by one, and none of them are just 'content'. Well, one is, but it's a three-month old baby so I don't think I have too much to worry about with that one. =[

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mukca, Diety
« on: June 13, 2012, 08:44:25 am »
It's simply an escaped demon posing as a god. Still a badass killing machine, but nothing your dwarves can't handle.

Unless he has deadly dust or webs or something similarly lethal.

Mkay.. Had me worried for a second, normally they have a title like the human diplomat, who was a 'Red Monster'. Never seen one say 'Diety'. lol.

DF Gameplay Questions / Mukca, Diety
« on: June 13, 2012, 01:05:36 am »
Soooooo. There's a guy on my map with that name in the title. Am I.... being visited by a God? Is some serious shit about to go down? I'm not sure how to react. D:

Edit: Let's change this to 'several odd events'.

I just had a human caravan show up, start unloading goods.... then immediately depart. Not ''merchants will be leaving soon'', but just got there, turned around and left. Then this diety guy gets attacked by two goblin ambushes, and a sword dwarf runs in and starts hacking them apart one at a time. I like to think he was divinely blessed by the God standing two feet to his left.

But I've checked all the bedrooms just incase, and there's no corpse anywhere. =[

Nevermind. I found him.  Yup, a corpse on a bed... so. Vampires. How does one deal with one of these?
