Oh yeah, I'm always rambling at people about how sweet Dwarf Fortress is and that they should play.

Unfortunately, no success so far. As far as I know. I don't get out much.

You eventually decide that, for now, you should look around for more gear, your sextant in particular.

Now, your cutlass is still on the wall, you have a chest full of gold, and the journal has a few more pages. Plus, you've yet to explore the galley.

What will you do first?

My stance over a danger room?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yeah, I can't draw. Hopefully the idea is clear.

I share this stance. :D

It isn't particularly realistic since blocking an automatic spear that comes from the same hole in the wall in the same direction every time has little to do with sparring with a live, intelligent opponent who is trying to kill you.

Considering the dwarf is still standing within the spear's range, he still has to make that dodge.

Unless there is some way to cap experience gains from training spears (I doubt it), then the only options are to somehow say training spears don't count as attacks and can't give experience or something (ludicrous), or let them continue to quickly advance a dwarf's battle prowess to demi-god levels (unrealistic, but at least it doesn't break the laws of sanity to tiny pieces.)

it's unrealistic because you become legendary just for being poked at with sticks

So what if it's the floor rather than enemies that poke you with sticks? You still learn to avoid being poked, and become very, very good at it. Even in a room full of things ready to poke you, you block or dodge every single prick.

Then, during battle, you easily knock away what is just a few spears as opposed to the previous 10 per tile.

...not sure why does it train attacking, though. That's a bug.

Nah, that's because you use your weapon to block/deflect the spears as well, teaching you how to use your weapon effectively.

Same goes for Shield User, Armor User, and Striker.

Urist McKungfu bats away the spinning oak training spear!

I think they'd be about as happy as we'd be if they constructed a giant human out of human corpses. P:

That would be pretty cool :)

In case there was any doubt that these are the Dwarf Fortress forums...

...And that is possible when it is mostly sunken?

Hmm.

It COULD work. If you cut the sunken bits off.

You consider attempting to get the ship moving again by cutting off the sunken parts of your vessel, but your seafaring experience reminds you that bigger holes won't help much. Not to mention, you don't know where to find axes or saws.

Or not even once, if you magma your trade depot.

Just saying.

Look, the important thing for everyone to remember is that this is a GAME. A single player one. No one can force you to play a certain way, and no one is making you read this thread either.

If you don't like danger rooms, don't use them. If you do, knock yourself out/impale your kittens/babies - WHATEVER.

There's no use arguing what is more "exploity", or what people should and should not do on their time, with their save files.

Yeesh.

A lot of conflicting thoughts go through your head, so you decide to weigh your options.

1. Stay aboard ship. With the coconuts, you have 1 days worth of food, two if you stretch it. Luckily, they come with some water. You can probably get ahold of fish, and you might find some unsullied foodstuffs in the galley.

2. Raft. Lash together Odds and Ends until you have something resembling a seaworthy craft. As far as food goes, not a whole lot worse than option 1, realistically, as far as food goes. On ship however, it would be easier to gather fresh water, so there is that to consider.

3. Continue to peruse the wreck, come up with a definitive course of action later. As you have only a rough idea of your location at the moment, this would probably be the best plan, at least until you find your sextant.

You briefly consider looking for chicks to toss into the bright Caribbean sea, but then you remember you didn't bring any with you.

Bumping to hopefully find the remaining players we need.

One can only assume that you're getting Caribbean Sun Madness, as you gleefully pronounce to all the world the world that your key shall be named Key, and that you both shall sail the high seas together.

Then, you carefully insert Key into the keyhole, and open the chest.

Your eyes are met with a small wealth of Dutch and English coins, as well as an English Letter of Marque, proving you to be in employ of the British Royal Crown, and granting you certain privileges. Beneath that is the Shipping Manifest you bought from Jack McScaven.

...You know, maybe it was a bit of a lapse in judgement to trust a guy with a name like that.

You briefly look around for a cage (a piratical one for preference), but none seem to make themselves apparent. You're not too worried about it though. If the thing inside the book is alive, it's staying pretty still.

You hold the book up and shake it out. A small piece of metal falls out and drops onto the floor. Upon closer inspection it would appear to be the key to your chest. Hot Damn! You'd wondered where you'd left that!
