Last round - started as station's only engineer.  Valiantly do my duty, secure the particle accelerator, wire it up, get it scanned and ready to rock, get plasma tanks in collectors and activate/lock them (couldn't pressurise the plasma tanks as there was no CE, so no access to secure storage).  Head out to get the emitters up.  Activate the first, lock it, activate the second, lock it...

...aaand lag spike hits me.  When my game catches up, turns out apparently I slipped over and fell in front of the emitter.  Normally I'd take a shot or two and get out of the way, but, well, lag.

I died.  No singularity.  Nobody even noticed for about twenty minutes until the power started failing.  :-[

Worst.  Engineer.  Ever.

Fun to watch, though.

OOC: Jhxmt: Dear god.
OOC: Jhxmt: 'Round trip ping-pong took 39 seconds.'  It's getting worse.
Round trip ping-pong took 0.26 seconds.
OOC: MisterTeeth: 0.13 seconds.
OOC: Jhxmt: And now 0.26
OOC: Scrdest: 0.24
OOC: Tsuchigumo550: .15
OOC: Vakothu: 0.22 here.
Round trip ping-pong took 14 seconds.
Round trip ping-pong took 61 seconds.

I have no idea what's causing this.  As you can see, it randomly spikes up from around 0.26 seconds to up to a full minute, and then back down again, for no discernible reason either in-game or to do with internet connection (my connection, and I assume the server's, remain stable throughout).

Simply...baffled.

SMES FOR CARGONIA!

Absolute yes.

Also, whoever was playing the janitor that was beseeching my cargo tech for energy guns, insulated gloves and other assorted goodies the other night - we so could have set up our own little empire in that corner of the world.  And yes, I got the doorbell working eventually.

Hmm...do solars work down on the mining outpost?  And, if some enterprising soul were to dismantle everything and pull it to the mining shuttle, could the singularity be set up down there too?

Forget Nanotrasen - let's secede!  :P

Went to bed after several rounds with 30(!) players online.
Slept for five hours.
Awake again.
Back on SS13.
Nobody on the server.  :'(  Curse you, GMT!

Also, I may have spotted a pattern in my horrendous lag spikes - I suspect they're related to (local, not network) map loading.  After playing a couple of rounds, my lag is almost nil.  First round of the night, it's always terrible.  Running around the server now as a ghost, I'm finding that I'm lagging primarily in areas that I haven't been to (today) yet.  Odd - no idea why local loading would lag like that.

Or there's no real pattern and I'm just reading into it way too much.  :P

Also, my wonderful engineering Utopia of filling all the plasma tanks with highly pressurised supercooled plasma so that the singularity generates near-infinite power (an idea stolen from an earlier poster, I believe) was cruelly thwarted by, uh, the singularity escaping.  D'oh.

Every round I play, no matter the job, seems to go the same way:

1) Start job.
2) Just about start to get comfortable/efficient at it.
3) Realise that everybody else is elsewhere, panicking about something.
4) Have no idea what the panic is about.
5) Shuttle is called.
6) End up at Escape/dead in vacuum en route.

...  :D

Clicked "Clear Cache" in BYOND in the hope that this would make my intermittent lag spikes go away (yeah, I know, but I'm desperate).

*logs back in*
*sees 30mb download window again*
*headdesk*

Sliming yourself is super-easy. Feed one of your starter greys and once it splits, grab a purple and stick it in a new pen. If there are no purples, grow up one of the greys again. Once you have a purple, do the same for it until you have a green. Kill the green, extract it, use an empty syringe on the extract, and inject yourself with it. It only takes more than 5-6 minutes if the RNG hates you.

Ah, cool, thanks - I managed to get a purple, but that was the point at which I decided to go pet one of my other slimes and, well, it petted me back.  Hard.

It appears the alternate server is so laggy (in terms of connection, not server) for me that I can't actually play it - I get so much lag on my inputs that I keep walking into walls because it thinks I'm still holding down keys.  :(

Stupid trans-Atlantic internet.

Sitting in their pen is a good way to get killed, even while they're feeding. Slimes have a variable called "friend" that makes them less likely to violently assault whoever is on that list and any mob can be added as long as they're in sight. Just standing outside the pen is enough to add you to that list. Slimes will pretty much always attack you if they're starving, unless you're a slime person.

The way I do it is I clear the pen of all but my choice slime, throw in a monkey, and wait for it to grow to an adult, then throw in another. It usually splits by that point.

Good to know, thanks (I think the slime-person solution might be a bit beyond my ken at the moment, Neinhaus!  ;))

Another question (I'm messing around with different jobs now, so forgive the random curiosity!) - is it possible to construct and/or order additional SMESes on the station?  Didn't see anything in the construction guides about them, and the supply crates don't seem to contain SMESes or parts for them.

Trying something a bit new to me.

As xenobiologist, how do I stop my pet slimes trying to eat my precious, precious brains?  I've followed the guide(s), and have made sure that I'm in the pen when they're eating the monkeys, can see me, etc...but they still seem incredibly prone to simply stun-attacking and glomping me.  Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

I managed to get a kethane-scanning satellite in a polar orbit of the Mun.  :D

A minor achievement, but a first for me.  And it's already found a couple of hefty deposits.

Now to do enough science to unlock the things I need to mine/convert it!

Yes its down and the alternative server is not working correctly for me anyways...

I logged onto the alt (only player) and...well, let's just say it's kinda gone to hell.  I logged off after about fifteen minutes of trying to cope with the lag caused by...well, everything.

See, this is why if you're ever drifting through space and you come across an abandoned station, you should just keep on drifting!  :P

You could have restarted the world.

I wasn't sure whether voting for a restart had the potential to break things further - I dimly recall there were some dangers around that if you were the only player back when I last played.  Also didn't seem like much point as the only player.  ;)

Random question: water tanks - can they be refilled once empty, and if so how?  I'm aware that they start with 1000 units of water, so this really shouldn't be an issue, but just curious!  :)

Map file is 2.9 MB, larger than /tg/ but smaller than Meta. Still nowhere near 30MB :P

Drat, guess I'm missing a buncha resources somewhere.  :(  Download's going at a crawl, too...921 KB in the last thirty minutes.

Yes.  KB.
