DF General Discussion / Re: Do the Soundtrack Fandango
« on: January 02, 2012, 02:01:55 am »
An adamantine spire is found in the caverns. A tense moment is felt throughout the fortress, and the dwarves watch with bated breath as the miners begin to dig away at the side of the vein. When it becomes apparent that it's solid all the way through, the danger is past, and the dwarves rejoice.

DF General Discussion / Re: Demographic insight

Gender: Male
Age: 16
Race: Caucasian. Quite a lot paler than the average.
Profession: High school student, seeking a career in some sort of computer science
Social class: Upper Middle
Perferred sock color: All my current socks are black, although my preference has never been based on color (eg, !!socks!! of any color are unfavorable, whereas comfortable socks of any color are quite alright). I suppose I prefer darker colors in general, though.
Favorite way to kill a goblin: A small squad of very well-trained soldiers, generally hammerdwarves

(hmm, why did I put the most thought into the "sock color" category?!)

And yet no one notices, of course. I hope it will be reviewed or something and eventually revised or repealed, but somehow I doubt that will happen; especially when anyone who suggests that the bill is flawed could be... *gasp*... a terrorist.

Say, does this bill only cover people in America, or does it include anyone anywhere? I heard somewhere that it gave permission to detain anyone in the world. That would certainly foil my plan to flee the US (probably to the EU) once I finish my education. I don't have the money to lobby the politicians into sensibility, so I don't have another choice, really... I feel as if the US government is declaring war on its own citizens. I actually don't feel safe in the US now because I disagree (peacefully, of course) with how the government is run.

I copied the original DF giant badger raws and adjusted them to have the dire badger's qualities; Genesis does not crash now. Thanks for the help. Here is my fixed version of the raws, tested and verified to work on at least my Mac (I don't have a Windows or GNU/Linux computer to test it on right now, but I suppose you could check that if necessary):

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, I noticed two other issues while looking through the raws:
- the MALE caste of the Buffalo (buffalo bull) in creature_benign_normal.txt does not have the [MALE] tag, causing would-be male buffalo to be genderless. All it needs is [MALE] under the MALE caste entry.
- although it appears that the Bladefoot Rancor has attacks in its raw entry, it can only "push" enemies. Unsure of how to fix this.

Deon: After bugtesting by adding one raw file at a time, I have discovered what makes Genesis (ASCII version) crash when the "objects" folder in the Mac OSX version of vanilla Dwarf Fortress is replaced with the "objects" folder of the ASCII version of Genesis (a process which works fine to install Genesis into DF on other operating systems).

In the file creature_savage_normal.txt, there is an entry for the Dire Badger ([CREATURE:GIANT_BADGER]). This entry, when removed, allows the Mac version of Genesis (vanilla DF with its objects folder replaced with ASCII Genesis' objects folder) to run normally (it crashes otherwise). Could you take a look at the raws and see if there's anything irregular in that specific creature's entry? For your convenience I've put them below:

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Steel in adventure mode?
« on: December 25, 2011, 01:19:00 pm »
Problem is, there's no elf/dwarf/goblin areas in adventure mode right now, so the only elves/dwarves/goblins you'll see are in bandit camps on rare occasions. Dwarves are the only race that can make steel right now. Thus, there's not really anywhere to get steel weapons reliably. Sometimes a night creature will kill a dwarf in worldgen, and if he had steel armor on, it will be in the lair... but that armor is too small to be worn by a human. Weapons are still good, though. As far as I know, lairs are the only place you'll find any steel equips (excluding player-made fortresses).

Very interesting... I think it's probably fake, considering HL3's track record... but then again, it's Valve. They do clever stuff like that on occasion, especially after they hired that MINERVA: Metastasis guy, who is apparently an ARG mastermind. Gabe Newell and Mark Laidlaw say there's no ARG currently, although they could be hiding something. I certainly hope they are.

There's some info here about the clues that people claim to have found:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/12/12/valve-vga-vid-appears-to-offer-hl3-clues
People are also claiming this panel from the recent TF2 comic to be a clue. So the rumor goes, if you increase the contrast, there's a λ (background, right of Spy's head)and a 3 (coffee stain to the left). I think this one's a bit of a stretch, honestly.

Here's to no SOPA!
I second this: Here's to no SOPA-- and may you, denizens of the web, have a very cheerful Christmas / felix Festivus / great Grav-mass / happy holiday / and so on. A toast, if you will, to the wonderful wealth of wisdom that is the internet.

General Discussion / Re: Occupying Wallstreet
« on: December 24, 2011, 04:03:39 am »
Are there any other decent sites for OWS specific news besides occupywallst.org? That site has been a great source of until recently... Now, however, they're mostly posting things along the lines of thank-yous and congratulations. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd like to have a source for news regarding actual events, dates of assemblies, days of action, etc.

Would not SOPA apply only to US-hosted domains? And if so, why is it being passed? If it goes through, I'd suspect that every major US-hosted site will just move elsewhere, leaving America much worse off. I suppose direct access to the sites would be blocked in the US if they're hosted elsewhere, but that can't be too hard to get around. Certainly not impossible.

The trouble is that this is censorship, and you damn well bet this is going to abused. It's also pointless censorship since pirates will just get around it. Piracy will always find a way.

Somehow I think it's deeper than "stopping piracy". I'm sure that the RIAA/MPAA/etc know that trying to stop piracy does very little, and so it's not worth all the lobbing... I would go so far as to say that this is just a continuation of the US's increasing amount of censorship, while the piracy thing is little more than an excuse to pass the bill.

a mad butcher of a doctor
You too, eh? I bet my patient mortality rate is higher than yours.

Mine is currently a gif of The Doctor from Cave Story, in that floaty animation that he does just before he teleports. He's just hovering there grinning evilly at my posts, I suppose.

I tend to stick with a "Dr. something or other" theme (for obvious reasons)... I think my avatar was Dr. Robotnik before this one. I attempted to make a little pixellated Santa hat for The Doctor, but my pixel-fu is too weak.

Life Advice / Re: Rootkit on Ubuntu
« on: December 24, 2011, 12:02:57 am »
Looking around the 'net, it appears Omeglespy is a cross-platform java application (if their site is to be trusted, anyway). If it is indeed such, you might want to try a scan with ClamAV. That picks up on trojans/rootkits/etc quite well, even if they're for a different OS (mainly Windows).

EDIT: Also, it's more likely a trojan (lies low and monitors activity) than a rootkit (hides malicious applications' processes and enables heightened privileges for them). Compared to, say, MSDOS-based operating systems, UNIX variants make it incredibly hard to gain root access unless the user has no idea what he's doing and enters his root password where he shouldn't, or uses a generic password/no password at all. If you've got a silly root password like "root" or something, change it now-- preferably to one you don't use elsewhere.

I suppose you ran the exe file with Wine. If so, it most likely installed stuff into your ~/.wine folder (which is basically like Windows' C: drive). Be sure to back up any applications you have in Wine's "program files" folder (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you most likely have nothing to back up) and then remove ~/.wine with this command:
Code: [Select]
rm -rf ~/.wine
On the next time you try to run a Windows program with Wine, a fresh copy of the ~/.wine folder will be recreated for you.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Deadly dust?
« on: December 23, 2011, 02:26:36 am »
Quite a while ago I had a forgotten beast with a deadly dust that caused instantaneous necrosis appear in a very open cavern (due to custom worldgen parameters). I sent a bunch of recruits after the beast and they all jumped on top of it, axes swinging wildly. Just as most of the recruits got within range, it used its dust attack and blasted them across the cavern. Anyone who was flung by the dust also contracted its necrosis syndrome, and as a result, fledgeling axedwarves rocketed across the cavern in all directions until they exploded against the walls, all the while emitting miasma like some sort of putrid contrail. Not one dwarf survived.

The scene was gruesome but utterly glorious. I don't recall whether the beast overtook the rest of my fortress... I most likely sealed off the caverns before it could wander in.
