If you're doing tiles in opengl you might want to just use textured quads.

I'm not at all familiar with OpenGL-- is that essentially creating a row of squares along the screen (each the size of one tile on the tileset bitmap) and retexturing them as needed?

Very odd. Check DF's errorlog.txt (in the main DF directory) and see if it says anything. If not, try to redownload DF.

How did you run it through the terminal? Like so?
Code: [Select]
cd /path/to/dwarf/fortress
./df

I'm trying to make a basic system for graphical tiles, similar to DF in the way of having (changeable) ASCII tilesets printed out to the screen. I'd like to use a fairly common portable library such as OpenGL or SDL. Does anyone here know of a decent tutorial for such a thing?

Teling Telingurvad, Teling the Coastal Seals. Female dwarf, deity of boundaries... Yukari Yakumo? In my fortress? It's more likely than you think.

Thanks for all the info so far. One other question as well: I know that on Apple computers, Linux will cause the battery life to be shortened quite a lot. Is this just Macs or do other laptops have this problem too?

Magical change, you say?  I would say giving DF real-world level graphics, but... that would actually be really awesome.  Why wouldn't I say that?  In fact, make it 100% immersive!  I want to be Manba Spokenward the Geared Noose of Lashes, dammit!

Take note that this change would have to alter the laws of physics or the mechanics of human perception because of how DF handles space. In other words, I support it entirely.

General Discussion / Re: Online DRM is BadŽ

I think the big reason they like to force you to use Steam to download a game when you've bought a CD is because that way the CD key only works once, and you can't buy a used copy.
Used copies are of course lost money for a publisher, and frankly I'd rather people pirated games than buy used copies.

Must be something along those lines. If removing DRM is profitable because it actually decreases illegal downloads, it would be gone completely in the interest in profit.

Since getting into GNU/Linux and the free software and open-source community I've completely shunned DRM and proprietary components in general. I now run a nearly fully free setup on my desktop, with the exception of DF and a few other independently developed but nonfree programs. The gain in freedom and flexibility is huge in comparison to the loss of some proprietary components. I can transfer every bit of my data-- even my whole OS-- from one computer to another, and the only things I have to worry about is hardware compatibility and hard disk space. I often get in over my head with the technical aspects, though, since I'm not used to having so much control. I figure it's a good learning experience regardless.

...I wonder whether a product would make more money with or without DRM. I'd say without, since DRM'd products get cracked almost instantly anyway (negating the scenario of "I can't get it illegally, so I'll just buy it"), and many people I know would not buy a product or would get it illegally if it has DRM.

Life Advice / Anyone use GNU/Linux on a laptop?
« on: November 22, 2011, 05:44:27 pm »
I'm looking to buy a new laptop for school and personal use some time in the near future. Currently I have a macbook which is becoming rather outdated, and although I greatly prefer Mac OS to Windows, I'd very much like to be able to ditch both and use GNU/Linux (probably Debian) on my laptop instead, and also to have total compatibility with the laptop's hardware such as wireless, trackpad and extra keys (eg. media keys). I'd prefer that they work without proprietary components, which ideally I will only use if I absolutely need to.

Does anyone here have or know of any laptops that have extremely good compatibility with GNU/Linux, especially ones that can run off a minimal amount of proprietary components? In addition, I'd prefer to buy one that has a blank hard drive/no preinstalled OS if that's at all possible, since without a proprietary OS installed the price will be considerably lower.

EDIT: I should note that I'm not above using proprietary drivers when they perform considerably better than their free alternatives, such as nvidia and nouveau or flash and gnash.

The musical titan Singsong the Bard of Harmony has come! A towering human wielding a lute. He has a soothing voice and sings the stories of all he encounters.

The rather flamboyant baron arrives with the hammerer at his side, striding confidently through the meeting hall and flashing handsome smiles to the dwarves within. If his teeth could have been seen through his beard, they'd have sparkled.

Giving Skyrim a try... it works solidly through Wine on Arch GNU/Linux so far. Considering my computer's three years old (although quite powerful for its time), the framerate is fine if I turn the graphics down to medium. The music I'd been listening to as I played (top left) ended up being eerily fitting, as it too pertained to a formidable, furious force of fearsome fire-flinging foes.

(Sorry for the jpeggy quality. IMG.ie wouldn't let me upload my png for some reason. Also, the blanked out spots are where my username/computer name was, of course. I might have been a bit paranoid getting rid of them, but one can't be too careful, I suppose.)
