DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Barracks design
« on: May 25, 2011, 02:54:14 pm »
Can anyone confirm the use of pumps as exercise for increasing stats? A dwarf's been pumping water in a loop for a season, and I've seen no increase in strength. Focus seems to have gone DOWN ("great ability to focus" > "very good focus")

Also, do dwarves need to be on the same z-level as the barracks designation to observe a training area?

Is there a way to randomise your dwarves on the embark screen if you don't like the ones you've rolled, or do you have to abort, find the site again and so on?

Also, what's the best material for crossbows? I can't make any silver ones, it seems. Copper perhaps?

Can it be modular? Say, putting another pressure plate and floodgate set might allow you to delay for 200?

Always fun, even if it does cross between announcements and battle reports.

You have struck a cavern!
Urist McMiner cancels dig staircase: interrupted by trogoldyte.
(report) Urist McMiner strikes the troglodyte in the face with his -copper pick-.

With nothing before it. I love my miners.

I think miners just keep digging and don't actually realise that they've put a pick through the head of someone/thing. They're dwarves, after all.

Go into init.txt in data/init. Find this:

and replace it with

In what way did they die? Physical trauma, insanity, poison...?

I'd like to see a trap that fires water and magma out into the air over enemies, colliding the two liquids and dropping an instant cave-in on their heads. I don't think aerial obsidian smashing has been used yet.

noble blood- contact poison,
primary effect- turns affected dwarfs into nobles
second effect, heavy bleeding, shortest non instant delay possible.
tertiary effects- every other syndrome at mak severity, happens 100 frames or so after bleeding happens.

should result in an epidemic of dwarfs being nobleified, bleeding, spreading the sydrome and then dying horrifically.

"OH ARMOK HE JUST EXPLODED-- Wait. I... I... I demand EARRINGS. AAAAAAAARGH!" (he explodes, repeat cycle for surrounding dwarves)

The book literally leaps into your mind, and your skull is jammed through your brain, tearing apart the brain!

I wish I had DF-like control over the real world.

Can you make the syndrome cause instant nobility and nobility-instilling gas? That would create a shockwave of demands across the fortress if dwarves are near each other.

You can't swim in water below 4/7, to my knowledge. I could be wrong.
I thought people would use 4/7 water pits to train swimming. Does the stat go up, but no swimming is required?

All natural walls are magma-safe.
Natural ice walls aren't.

Constructed ice walls are, though, which is weird. And awesome.

I see...

On a rather unrelated note, setting the volume variable in init.txt doesn't affect anything. The value that you can see in the sound settings ingame is whatever you set it to, but the volume level itself stays at 255 until you change it from that screen.

This may have to do with me using Linux-- is that the case on other systems as well, or not?
I have mine set to 0 and it works exactly as you'd expect. Haven't tried anything but that and the default 255. (Windows 7 64-bit)
Any other value has the same effect.

It means that while your Queen has no King, she does have a concubine. Who is also a drunk. >;]

One would think a sober dwarf noble would stand out as the anomaly. Maybe sobriety is what causes the uselessness of noblehood.

Also, my question somewhere above seems to have been missed:
Will a chained animal/dwarf still be able to swim in 4/7 water or below?
