If they're berserking from a strange mood, you should likely have walled him up in the workshop if you knew not all the right materials were available. Walls can't be smashed at all.

The problem now is that they're based on raiding, and therefore don't farm. They can't steal enough food (or they just don't go after food) and they die soon after, I think.

I just used an axe to chop off a night creature's hands, then equip them to my respective hands and batter it to death with them. I think it bled to death from its severed stumps rather than having its skull caved in by its own hand, though.

You can't assign tombs after death. I assume he does it in advance.

I am curious about the layout of the rest of your fortress. Do you have pictures of it?
The rest is mainly arranged on the vertical around the staircase, and is just a random mess, so doesn't look all that great. But my bedroom complex is kinda neat:

Yellow is elf, grey is goblin, if I recall correctly. Not sure about humans... light grey maybe?

On a rather unrelated note, setting the volume variable in init.txt doesn't affect anything. The value that you can see in the sound settings ingame is whatever you set it to, but the volume level itself stays at 255 until you change it from that screen.

This may have to do with me using Linux-- is that the case on other systems as well, or not?

Mod in lead warhammers for practicality's sake. Of course, while you're at it, ununoctium hammers would be quite a bit better weight-wise, despite requiring smelting at a large hadron collider.
