DF Gameplay Questions / Embarks to try?

Just getting the hang of DF-- enough to survive for a year or two, at least-- and I'm looking for environments/embarks that will be challenging, but not outright impossible, to live in (and use effectively against enemies, of course). Currently I've just been going with flux, shallow, heavily forested, warm; but I want to branch out. What are some fairly challenging embarks?

Weapon traps with spikes don't trigger by impact, but upright spike traps do cause additional damage if something falls on them. I'm not sure if that damage is significantly increased by a bigger fall, though.

Always floodgates for water, although that's sort of a habit. I use floodgates instead of doors only if I want a delay, trap-wise. Sometimes that's needed if I want enemies to trap themselves, although drawbridges that raise away from the entrance with pressure plates on the outside are my favorite door-related device: death by incredibly gradual self-inflicted fall damage for enemies, safe passage for dwarves.

Hm, you could put some retractable spikes in the water channel under the grate to repeatedly stab whatever beast decides to stand beneath it.

Can water be pressurized, so that when released it shoots forward with considerable force to knock enemies away?

EDIT: also, is it possible to catch water creatures like giant olms and alligators? My moat needs trained attack animals.

A noxious-fume breathing, elephant-trunked skinless elk FB came up from the depths and murdered what little military I had. I ordered my civilians outside of the fort, and just as the murderous elk charged out the entrance (which was rigged with a pit that could cave-in the floor), I pulled a lever that a mechanic rigged temporarily to make said entrance trap work from outside. The elk then fell and exploded on spikes 30 Z-levels below.

I am quite happy... although I don't dare unstick what remains of him from the spikes, considering the entire room is now covered with his extract and I'm sure disease will spread from that.

I've got them training now, working on a danger room. How do I set uniforms and weapons for the squad to use? It seems that the uniforms menu makes them get what I want them to only some of the time. I have metal armor / axes set.

Masterful is x12 value, I believe that artifact armor is indeed 3x more effective-- so says the wiki.

I seem to be failing miserably at getting a military up and running. I know how to make squads and get them to move/kill stuff, and that's about it-- I find the wiki page rather confusing. Is there some kind of tutorial on the military?

EDIT: Also, another question. Can you pressurize water in such a way that releasing floodgates holding it causes the water to be shot forwards and push enemies? Preferably outside into freezing climates.

What you can do to get a Windows-default tileset to work is take the raw/data folders from the Windows versions and just overwrite the default Mac ones with them-- both platforms' versions of these files are the same.

I've got the latest version and I don't seem to be having any noticeable FPS drops-- I doubt it's that. Try a clean install, maybe, and see if that fixes it?

Nah, mod in buckets made of blood.

On a serious note, aren't serrated disks incredibly bloody/messy? I have just two 10/10 copper disk weapon traps near my fortress entrance, and I've seen them cause a thief to nearly explode and coat at least a 5x5 area completely with blood. Perhaps, though, yours pools up rather than just applying once to a surface?

What do you mean by lost? Unrecoverable because they're in the trap's basin, or actually unfindable but still accounted for?
