IMHO it is very Human to raise and kill animals for their meat; it is more Dwarfy to grow plump helmets, quarry bushes, etc. from the very earth itself! :)
Would you rather eat the fruit of a bush, or the tender meat of an animals pain and suffering?

I'd rather brew a plump helmet man alive for booze.

I've had this happen once. For me it was a world gen bug. I tried re using the seed again and the land was a normal haunted forest. The first time though it was a map with ground level plateaus giving way to hell at the bottom of the chasm. Sadly wasn't playable as it would pause constantly and eventually crashed my client.

Thanks guys, that really helps, takes some of the worry off knowing I'm not going to get owned by goblins for a bit!

Having a tooled up well trained military is fun. But you can rely on mass use of cage, stonefall and weapon traps to survive ambushes and even the first few sieges easily. Try making lots of menacing wooden spikes and filling weapon traps with 10 each of them in your entrance tunnel. You'll like the results.

Can you get this every time you generate a world at scarcity 100? It would be interesting if you did.

Set up multiple butcher workshops near a refuse pile. Corpses get dumped in the refuse pile ( set dwarf to gather refuse from outside with the orders menu). Then an idle dwarf with the butchering trade will prepare the dead animal. Also have tanning enabled to gain leather from it. Its good in a busy fort to have multiple dwarfs with butchering and tanning enabled. Especially if your rearing birds.

Make double sure your dwarf can get to this yak and has the right labors active and isn't busy.

Setting up jails that are fully engraved, expensive metal chains for restraints beside food and booze stockpiles can help really well. The dwarfs that tantrum get locked up and become the happiest dorfs they've ever been on release. Also agreed that tantrums can have benefits. It gives a chance for fell moods. Who wouldn't want an artifact made out of dwarfs?

But generally prevention is the best cure. Large legendary dining rooms, displaying artifacts and rare caged animals in busy traffic areas and giving your citizens bedrooms all go a long way to keeping them happy.

A forgotten beast meat roast that also had honey and dwarven sugar and elephant fat in it. I liked to imagine it being a glaze and gravy that the gods would be proud of. The forgotten beast meat came from a giant sauropod.

Tasty!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Neat artifact weapon, but is it good?

Black Bronze Warhammer with hanging rings of Silver
I know Silver makes great smashing weapons, and gold is really heavy, so in theory it should to be better than a Bronze Warhammer, not to mentions it is super-high quality.
I'm thinking it'll be great against unarmoured, and slightly less good against heaviliy armoured enemies (iron/steel), similar to my last cool artifact weapon.

That sounds badass. And its a decent weight metal so it should perform great. I think the best I had was a forgotten beast bone pick. Not amazing but it was fun. Any migrants I find liking gold, silver, platinum, steel or adamantine are getting weaponsmith training in hopes of getting better.

Sadly not at the current time. Possibly in future editions. I don't think the game is capable yet of that.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Steel Sword VS Obsidian Sword

If you make obsidian short swords make them masterwork ones if you have a legendary stonecrafter. They can be very effective against unarmored enemies. A good option for any forts where metal is difficult to get. They mince enemies up pretty good in full weapon traps.

Crush your unwanted dwarfs under a lowering bridge. Then raise it to block off your hermit from the world.

You could also assign your bad-for-armor-metal artifact armor to a single noble in a squad by himself so he can stroll around the fort in his finery. Acting like a mobile happy thought generator.

Make her fight in an arena against increasingly tough opponents. Make a viewing area akin to a Colosseum with meeting area for your citizenry to watch. Dont forget to give your duke/nobles royal viewing boxes!
