I think it would be cool if you didn't really have a storyline, just having a Olympic-esque Mech Tournament of some kind, and your goal is to win the gold for your country(don't forget the prize money!).
Your goal would simply be to win, with storylines poitentially developing on their own?
Say you badly beat Contestant A, destroy his mech, and injure him with a direct shot to the cockpit so he can hardly walk. He'd hate your guts, try to sabotage you, and generally want you dead.
Now, say I have Contestant B. You met him after a match, and you struck up a conversation with him. you forego training to go out to a bar with him and you quickly become best buddies. You guys hang out after matches, go to the parties that are hosted near the Tournament, and generally have a good time.
Now, let's say you make it to the Semi-Finals. You and B have become like family, and A has attaempted to sabotage you twice. You know this crazy son of a bitch is gonna try to kill you after the tournament, irregardless if he wins or not. He hates you that much.
Shortly before the match, instead of going to your room to sign autographs and give an interview on 'How It Feels To Be in the Mech Semi-Finals!' to International Press, you head to B's room. B is going to face A. You tell B, that if he gets the chance, to kill A. You tell him A hates you, and if A gets to the Finals along with you, he's gonna try to kill you. B agrees, hugs you lightly, and begins to suit up and prepare.
After your match, you sit in the stand and watch A and B's match. B knocks A's Mech onto the ground, and instead of firing into the arms or legs, he begins to use his arm mounted flamethrower to cook the cockpit. Horrified or estatic audience members cheer for B or weep in pity for A. The move increases his international fame, his ruthlessness, and his determination to win, as well as increasing his guilt/mental unstability.
You have to face B in the Finals...
Now how epic would that be?
Maybe, if your really determined, you could link the Tournaments together, so you face the same competitors, only more skilled and determined?
Like the 2064 Mech Tournie, the above sequence of events happen. B is badly burned in the fight. He feels betrayed by you, statin you should not have fired the cannon round into the exposed electronics, claiming you should have crippled his mech and made him surrender.
B, due to his fame for cooking A, was sponsored for the 2068 Tournament, and has a massive, kitted out Mech, and a desire to see you in...
