Having never previously been able to get into Dwarf Fortress, I ordered the physical book (because I like physical books) which I just got today. And I'm not even to the point of embarking and I'm already "stuck".

I generated a world according to the book's suggestions (savagery very low, minerals everywhere, medium everything else) and then, following the book's instructions, I tried using the site finder to find an area with low savagery, medium temperature, flux stone, no aquifer, multiple shallow & deep metals and >=some soil. No results. I generated another world and tried the same search. No results. I generated another. No results. I generated a fourth world using the largest world size. No results. On this same world, I tried tweaking the site finder settings to be less picky. No results. On all of these searches, the only item in the list of site finder settings left in red was "Flux Stone". Am I doing something wrong or is it just really hard to find flux stone? I'm getting tired of waiting for worlds to generate and searches to finish. If I am to use more lenient settings with the site finder, what settings are OK to change to find a good starting location?

Of course, I don't know if having a flux stone or not is a big deal, but until I know what I'm doing, I want to follow the book's instructions.

Same thing is happening to me.  I'm on my fifth world without a valid site, with flux being the missing ingredient.  Given that world gen takes a fair amount of time, this has been excruciating.

I'm sure I could always trade for it, but there's no guarantee it would come with the initial caravan.

[edit] I should pay more attention - apparently all you need to do is set the minerals to spawn with slightly less frequency and you're golden.[/edit]

My favorite parts:
  • Standing with a machete, decapitating oncoming Infected one by one
  • Throwing anything that winds up killing anything (Generic, but satisfying)
  • Pissing off large groups of walkers, climbing a ladder and tossing a molotov
  • Wandering WAY far away from my mission objective and exploring (Act 1 only)
  • Shooting a well-placed gas tank right as a Tank/Ram/etc walks by
  • Head-stomping a walker before he can stand up

My least favorite parts:
  • My rare, expensive weaponry becoming useless when I level
  • Not being able to save whenever I want
  • Not being able to use the mouse as an analog control
  • Getting stun-locked as soon as there is more than one infected nearby
  • The city.

Yeah I noticed this too, it is pretty annoying.  I just hope they fix it with a patch or something.
?

I'm doing it all the time. You just need to level a bit.

Your damage and sever power goes up with your items and skills.

I think he was talking about the mouse sensitivity :D

Okay, I have exactly one problem with the game: the mouse sensitivity.  In the menu, the mouse controls are RIDICULOUSLY sluggish.  I have to pick up my mouse and move it to the other end of the pad several times to get to the inventory.  So I up the sensitivity!  Then as soon as the gameplay begins (or resumes), the slightest movement of the mouse sends my character (the firearms lady) spinning like a ballerina.  Fortunately I have a mouse with on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment, so in the menu I crank it up to the top, and then put it all the way to the bottom to actually play.  It's a huge pain in the butt, and it kills immersion.  Also, I may just be terrible at the game, but I have never successfully removed a limb from a zombie.

Right now I am the last person I expected to support Bethesda, but I do have a quick point to make about the menu system.  The main gripe I am hearing is that it isn't a concise view of all of your skills.  Point in fact, you can only see about a third of them at any one time.  However, that doesn't seem to be an attempt to obfuscate or (conversely) overly-simplify the UI.  That's the UI designer trying to take the game further away from the grid-of-numbers that it once was.

If you are one of the people angry about the constellation skill screen, try and imagine a situation in which you need to see *all* of your skill numbers at the same time.  Then ask yourself if - in that scenario - you are min/maxing.  You probably are, and that's something they seem to want to avoid.

With Oblivion, min/maxing was essentially a requirement.  Lord help you if you inadvertently leveled off of Athletics - suddenly you're surrounded by high-level daedra and all you can do is run a little bit faster.  If you wanted to be truly successful in Oblivion (and to a lesser extent, Morrowind) you absolutely had to carefully plan your build from start to finish.  How many of us, in our first Oblivion playthroughs, got absolutely destroyed at the first Oblivion Gate after spending some time leveling up on sidequests?  You either had to run the main quest ASAP before you leveled up too much or you had to wait until you were maxed out and fully enchanted.  That seems to be one of the major things they are trying to change for Skyrim.

TL;DR - if there's no need to micromanage your skill gains, do you really need to see all of your numbers at once?

It is a new bug, potions have some odd stacking behavior now.

I've found that sometimes they stack, sometimes they don't.  It's like they are being generated with different item levels and thus the game is treating them as separate items.

With that being said, I just inadvertently killed one of my most promising builds in the most stupid way imaginable.  Vampirism, Swords, Dual Wielding, Fungal, Dodging, Berserker, Deadshot.  How did I kill him?  I decided to see what the buff of a Potion of Brilliance was while standing next to the shop guy.  Suddenly he and some very angry demons were stomping my face into the ground.

Vamp is easy mode. You heal every hit, usually for more than the enemy does, and at level 2 you can eat corpses for hitpoints. EZMODE

I had a reply all thought out for this, talking about how a mediocre build with Vamp goes bad, but a decent build with Vamp goes great.  Then I couldn't stop staring at your avatar, and the words left.

Well this just takes the cake for irony as far as I'm concerned:

As is the case with anything obtained through the internet, I immediately scanned the contents of the leak for viruses.  Of course, there was a trojan!  "Woe is me," I said, "for the existence of a trojan is a deal-breaker."  But then I looked a little closer at what file got flagged.  In the root directory, there is an executable for the game.  As is the case with many leaks, there also exists an identically-named executable in a folder named "crack".  Take a guess as to which of those two files was the trojan.  If you guessed "The Crack", you are wrong!  Turns out the cracked version is clean, and the original was a trap.

I'll just leave this here

Based on the usage of lava for the meatus, I'm guessing Mr. Copper may have an STD.

Are wizard hats that rare? I was in Kael's server and found two within a minute down in the caves.  This "Tim" mage attacked me two times and he dropped it both times.

The problem is I haven't run in to any tims.

I am disappoint.

You and your same-vertical-resolution monitors.  I have a 1600x1200 to my left as a secondary, my main is 1920x1080.  As for why there are pixels cut off, that's because mine's an in-game screenshot rather than a full prntscreen job.

With that being said...
Spoiler: Allow me to retort! (click to show/hide)

I made that world exclusively to be my house - no mining, no sky island farming, no meteors, nothing.  As you can see, I have done precisely nothing with the space I flattened out for myself.  The construction project isn't stopped due to a shortage of material, it's stopped due to a shortage of imagination.

Though I must say I *am* proud of my organization. The six rooms along the center of the house are color coded.  Each has two chests; the left houses raw materials such as bars and bricks, while the right has all of the armor and tools for that material.  The back walls provide an at-a-glance means of identification.  From bottom to top, it's Copper, Iron (stone wall due to non-existence of iron wall), Silver, Gold, 'Other' (Shadow,Necro,Meteor,Jungle), and Hellstone (backed by red brick).

You may also notice the 16 chests in the top of the tower.  These each contain up to 5 copies of 4 items apiece, and are in alphabetical order (chests 1-8 on the left, 9-16 on the right).  Unique items such as those found in chests or crafted from things found in chests (or basically anything magical) take up 13 chests, for a total of 52 items.  The next two chests contain monster drops (bones, hooks, etc), and the final chest is just miscellaneous stuff I couldn't find any other place for (Cobweb, Jungle Rose, Glowing Mushroom Seeds, Gems).

I have almost every item a few times over, but I haven't found a Flamelash, a Whoopie Cushion, and now a Wizard Hat.  Oh, and I still need to craft three more phaseblades - Red, Yellow, White.  I have the gems, just not the meteorite.

I think we should all forget about the OTHER X-COM game being made and call this the new X-COM game.

I think I speak for many of us when I say THERE IS NO OTHER XCOM GAME IN DEVELOPMENT.  This is the only one.  If there WERE another, it certainly wouldn't be getting made by a big studio.

Also, does anyone else wish they would make a sequel to The Matrix?  I would like to further explore that movie's universe.

okay, first time playing since the patch.  After spending an hour or so exploring a cave system, I remember that you can resize the window now.  I hit Maximize, of course, and immediately joygasm.
