DF Suggestions / Increased Bedding options (plus, clothing!)
« on: August 07, 2007, 04:54:00 pm »
Although the addition of imported wood will make this a non-issue, it is still unusual that beds can still only be made of wood, while virtually everything else can be made of wood, ore, raw stone, blocks of stone, glass, etc.

I personally dislike using the non-renewable Metal to make barrels, so it's always a balancing act of "Bed or Barrel" for me.  And that's not even counting Bins, since I've never really used them.

So I was mulling this over during my downtime at work, trying to think of the pros and cons of different materials used to make bedding.  A stone slab, for instance, wouldn't be very comfortable, and a glass bed is just a little impractical.  Then again, a wooden bed without cushioning isn't exactly the pinnacle of comfort either.  That's when it came to me: HAMMOCKS!  Cloth is infinitely renewable, and it would finally give you a reason to not immediately get rid of high-skill clothing makers. ("WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY LEGENDARY SHIRT WAS WORN DOWN TO NOTHING!?!?! I'LL KILL YOU!!!")

That brings me to my next point - I wish there were a way to tell my dwarves, "look - if you dont like that you are wearing tattered clothes, take them off!"  It gets frustrating when, on a tropical map, my dwarves get depressed because one of their myriad layers of clothing is tattered.  Just take it off!  I'd rather my dwarves complained about the lack of gloves/boots/caps than the worn clothing.

DF Suggestions / Alternate Sources of Ash
« on: July 30, 2007, 03:55:00 pm »
Sorry if someone has suggested this before, nothing similar came up on Search, and the huge Bloat list scares me.

Basically, the relative scarcity of wood is the limiting factor in many fortresses.  Virtually all wood is reserved for beds and barrels.  However, I am a huge fan of clear glass, which requires pearlash, which requires potash, which requires ash, which requires wood.

My question is this - can't we burn other things for the ash?  Charcoal I understand as wood-only, but ash?  I'm thinking, I sure do have a lot of goblin corpses piled up in my refuse pile...

A morbid thought, to be sure, but ash is ash.

Before I submitted this I thought to myself, "If the process of making Steel is so accurate, let me make sure my Ash-thoughts aren't completely off base."

Sure enough, from the Wikipedia entry for Potash: "(when creating potash)...Then fill the barrel with wood-ashes and pour water over it."

Wood-ashes.  Dang it.  So much for my crematorium!

DF General Discussion / Any Outlook users?
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:01:00 am »
So I'm sitting at work, checking my work email, and I get a mail from a coworker.  We'll call him David.  The mail was a very generic question, and was sent with low importance.  For those of you unaware, low importance emails have a blue down-arrow icon.

My first thought upon glancing at the email: "David's thirsty."

Is something wrong with me?

DF General Discussion / DF from a USB key?
« on: June 23, 2007, 09:43:00 pm »
Given that DF appears to run solely out of its own directory, is it possible to run the game off of a suitably large USB key?

I switch computers a lot, and rather than maintaining a few instances of DF (and thus a few fortresses), I'd rather just carry the key around with me.

DF General Discussion / A request from a horribly busy player
« on: November 12, 2007, 04:29:00 pm »
Hey guys, I have a favor to ask.  Between work and family stuff I haven't been able to spend more than an hour or two with the new version since its release.  However, I do have the occasional opportunity to check the forum.

I was hoping that some of you can tell me some of the amazing creations you've made so that I have something to look forward to once I have time to play.  Done anything neat with gears and axles and screw pumps and whatnot?

Pweeeeeeease?
