DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / This is very, very weird.

I was doing a bit of messing around, generating new worlds and checking out embark sites. I found this one that i thought looked pretty good. It was a woodland on one side and a heavy forest on the other and woulda worked perfect for lines of ballista and catapults. After preparations i embarked. There was a ton of lag and what i am now looking at is... weird. The patch my dorfs are currently standing on is only about 1/4 of the screen. The rest is semi molten stone that rises about 147 z-levels above them. The last 10 or so levels look to be lava suspended in midair The last 2 levels are lava surrounded by semi molten stone. The kicker is the 2 adamantine spires that go all the way up. The caverns also seem to be covered in grass.

Id like to show you guys pictures but i dont know how. Was this just a cool glitch?

EDIT: After a quick peek at the numbers, i have 32,291 raw adamantine.

Dear Urist McSworddwarf,

I apologize profusely about the loss of your husband and newborn in yesterdays battle against the goblin siege. You did elect to bring the child with you though.

Its just... did you have to kill your dog too? I mean come on.

Yours truly,
The dictator

Create a fortress near a civilization. Your goal is to completely wipe them out and prepare the lands for their new dwarven kingdom. Make them fear the might of even the smallest of dwarven settlements! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GODS!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dorfs will not mine?

Im guessing that the yellow X's are stacked. If thats the case, there is pretty much no reason for them not working.
The X on the lower level leads into solid rock on all sides.

Is there any building material down there? If so, have the stuck dwarf build an up stair. Then, on the level above, have someone build an up/down stair.

Eh? Im probably missing something here but if the 2 yellow X's (which i assume are down/up stairs) are on top of each other, the other un-dug down/up stairs are under down stairs. They should be digging if that is true though, which they arent doing.

Nah, it's cool, dwarven wine is made from fermented mushrooms.

That explains why everyone in my fortress is insane.

Its happened to me too, though they occasionally go back one at a time. Early on i had a long line of rotting mussel corpses from when my first fisher just went nuts and fished for a season straight.

My money is on them using the crossbow as a club without firing a bolt or switching to their melee weapon.

You are correct sir! My commander was a hunter/axedwarf. I thought i would give him a bronze crossbow so he would be a god of battle. Instead he ran headlong into a group of about 10 goblin hammermen. Didnt fire a single shot, seeing as how he didnt have a quiver, thats not surprising.

Off topic: It seems my marksdwarves are incapable of carrying quivers either. I thought that was part of the uniform as its never been a problem before. Any way to ensure they equip themselves properly?

Channel out a second path for the water to take. I had the same issue you have and that solved the problem.

However it created a new one, as it hasnt stopped raining on my map all year. Now a large portion of it is covered in water. But at least the fortress is safe.

First vein i found had a hole that went pretty high up. Thankfully i could see another one and decided to dig it out. It went as high as the second cavern level. I think i had 100-something just from the first 2 top layers, but i knew it went much deeper than that. It was pretty wide too, and i could easily dig out 20 more per level.

I think, in all, i had about 1000 something before i killed off the fortress. Despite all that, my miners put up a better fight than my military.
