DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / This is very, very weird.
« on: October 29, 2011, 05:04:45 pm »
I was doing a bit of messing around, generating new worlds and checking out embark sites. I found this one that i thought looked pretty good. It was a woodland on one side and a heavy forest on the other and woulda worked perfect for lines of ballista and catapults. After preparations i embarked. There was a ton of lag and what i am now looking at is... weird. The patch my dorfs are currently standing on is only about 1/4 of the screen. The rest is semi molten stone that rises about 147 z-levels above them. The last 10 or so levels look to be lava suspended in midair The last 2 levels are lava surrounded by semi molten stone. The kicker is the 2 adamantine spires that go all the way up. The caverns also seem to be covered in grass.

Id like to show you guys pictures but i dont know how. Was this just a cool glitch?

EDIT: After a quick peek at the numbers, i have 32,291 raw adamantine.

Topic title says it all. They are trying to get down into my pit so they can get to the cavern, but for some reason they cant path there. Any way to fix this? Maybe dig straight down into the cavern?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Digging a chasm

I see a lot of people talking about their 10-z level drops and i dont want to be left out. Exactly how does one go about creating them? I tried channeling several floors but that ended with 2 miners falling and breaking their legs and 3 others being crushed to death in a manner i can only describe as "terrifying".

...well, they suck. Nothing like having a Yak gore 2 people in the head (one was wearing a copper cap, by the way). They chased him all over the map for about 10 days only to die like that. When i checked the battle log, all i saw was punching and scratching. The funny thing is, one had a silver war hammer and the other had an obsidian short sword.

Are they programmed to fight like idiots? I had a recruit with a silver whip get taken out by a goblin thief with a silver dagger for almost the same exact reason. I know armor is important and all, but i shouldnt need it for killing yaks, especially when they are carrying weapons capable of removing limbs or crushing bones. Im getting pretty tired of having to ditch a fortress because my hammerdwarf has forgotten how to swing something other than his fists.

So, any helpful hints from the pros around here? Ive only had one fort make it past 2 years, but only because i used a danger room (which felt like cheating). Every single other time (10+) has ended in a siege of 10 or less COMPLETELY DOMINATING ME (ie: Less than 2 kills).
