Life Advice / Laptop overheating problems
« on: October 20, 2013, 09:40:23 am »
So, earlier this year, I bought myself a moderately powered laptop for uni, as I need to be able to access some CPU/GPU intensive medical programs. Lately, as we're heading into warmer weather, it's overheated a coupla times and kicked in its failsafe... yesterday, once, today once.

So I loaded up CoreTemp, and it gave a reading of TJMAX=95C, MIN=95C, MAX=95C
Now, that couldn't be right, so I looked it up- apparently my motherboard and CPU don't properly report temp to CoreTemp. It's just an issue with the cpu.

Onto specs!

Toshiba Satellite L950
-AMD Vision A8-4500M "Trinity" APU, 4 core @ ~1.9ghz, sometimes 2.8ghz turbo, but that's not common
-8GB RAM, don't know which kind, presume DDR3 or whatever the latest one is
-AMD Radeon HD 7640M + 7610G dual graphics, 1GB hardware memory (DXDIAG reports as "4096MB total memory", but I assume 3GB of that is software memory)

I presume that it's the CPU's issue - on the laptop itself, only one side gets really hot, and only when the following happens:

-The computer is plugged in to the power
-The computer is running a CPU or GPU intensive game
-Ambient temperature in the room is above ~27C

It's clicked off its failsafe with the following:

-Team Fortress 2
-Civilisation V
-Guild Wars 2
-Left 4 Dead 2

Surprisingly, Dwarf Fortress hasn't - i guess that's to do with the fact it's single threaded and runs on only one core?

In advanced power options, I set the CPU to throttle to 90% power when plugged in, but that didn't help.

Any ideas? I suppose I could get a cooling mat.

Play With Your Buddies / Reudh's Oblivion LP - Ruined Tail's Tale
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:49:21 am »
Hello everyone, and welcome to my LP of Oblivion, with mods!

Ruin. A name that held so many connotations associated with all forms of chaos and despair, a name that was synonymous with darkness, desolace and destruction. Yet it was a name that -when spoken by his Shadow- comforted the Argonian no matter what the situation...

General Discussion / Reudh's Hilarious Australasian politics thread!
« on: March 24, 2013, 04:40:28 am »
Welcome to the Australasian politics thread! Be nice! Respect others views! Be mature, level headed adults like I know you all are (most of you).

TOPIC BANLIST: Absolutely DO NOT raise the following topics as they are too contentious.

Gun Control

Quote from: Old OP
To go along with the other politics megathreads, why not have Australasian politics?
At the very least, it could be certainly very amusing to yap about Australian and Oceanian politics (lol Abbott lol Gillard)... so go right ahead!

So, old news, but how about that blistering speech Gillard gave Abbott on misogyny a while back?

So, inspired by Skyrunner and MonkeyHead on the #Bay12LB IRC, I have decided to make a Bay 12 RPG in RPG Maker VX.

I'm by no means a good programmer at all, or a good artist, so... perhaps those of you with spriting talents could aid me here.

I was thinking that I make some utterly generic RPG, involving the forum culture and stuff like that. Something like the forumites live in some kind of fort that gets attacked by somethin' or other. Everyone comments on how old and cliched that is... etc.

I was also thinking that we could have various forumites as PCs. PCs get their own sprites. NPC forumites get their own sprites too.

So what d'yall think? I think it could be amusing. Big Bad can be Armok. Necro910 has to get in there somehow, as a boss who spams Magma based attacks.
Bolded below indicates finished sprites. Italic indicates semi-finished sprites.

Forumites dwarfed in the game (PC): 9/10 (Exkirby, The Fool, FuzzyZergling, GreatOrder, Svampapa, Darvi, USEC, Zanzetzuken, Dermonster, Neonivek as Evander Justice
Forumites dwarfed in the game (NPC): 11/20 (Ultimuh, Xeron, Furtuka, Solifuge, Monkeyhead, Alfie, Somestupidguy, Gatleos, Haspen, Skyrunner, Urist McScoopbeard, JohnFalcon
Forumites making an appearance elsewhere: Freeformschooler
Forumites as enemies (MSH, Max and their final form Maximum Metal Slime Hunt Zero, Zanzetzuken, Dermonster.)

Ponies are part of the core kingdom. The darkling kingdom has wolves, but I guess Trolls (friendly ones) wouldn't be unfitting. Penguins would be neutral, since they're both black and white :P

Will the Main Main Main character lean toward the Dark Side, willingly letting the Troll Faction flood the World Fortress with magma? Or will he/she take command of the Deep Dwarves, forming a Valiant Liberal Crime Squad to take down the Troll King once and for all? Now featuring: RELATIONSHIP VALUES! Choose to reject Descan's advances and chase the much more timid Kaijyuu!

I could do this all day.

Also I went and generated a sprite and portrait for myself

If anyone who's skilled at spritework could edit them to include my hat from my avatar I would be very grateful

Scripts used:

Yanfly Engine Melody - massive combat system overhaul, among other things. Found in this gargantuan script:
- YEM Core Fixes - fixes bugs and stuff in VX itself
- YEM Custom Message Melody - adds extensions to the message system, allowing use of icons and more effects
- YEM Restored Functions - restores functions found in earlier versions of RPG Maker that were removed for some reason
- YEM Equipment Overhaul - adds 'affinities', so certain classes get bonuses or penalties when using a particular piece of armor, and provides bugfixes for the armor system.
- YEM Extended Movement (aka YEM 8D) - adds support for eight directional movement. If coupled with YEM, allows sprites to have animations similar to those found in 2003, with more than merely idling in place.
- YEM Item Overhaul - Adds fixes to the item menu, allows extended information to be put in place for items
- YEM Main Menu Melody - fixes up the main menu
- YEM Victory Aftermath - I really, really love this script. It shows more information about what happens just after a battle; opening a window that shows what items you got, how much exp, and letting your characters comment on the battle, as in they can say 'Oh hooray I got more exp', 'ooh loot' 'i leveled up, wahey!', etc. I'm pretty sure it can even be tailored per enemy, but I'm not 100% sure.
-YEM Snapshot Battle Back - Removes the INCREDIBLY cheesy radial blur effects found in battle and replaces them with a snapshot of the map one is currently on.

I'm thinking of getting a few other scripts, but I'm not sure what. If anyone is prepared to do voice acting I could get Namkcor's Battle Cry script, but would be a bit silly.

This is from a little tale Loose Nut told over in the What's going on in your fort? thread.

It was a cold day, the day we goblins were ordered to come in force to the dwarven fort Loosenuts.
I have seen many battles, oh, so many battles, and yet I wish for more.

And so we march.

We march, and march, over the frozen wastes. Over the tundra. Over the plains. And finally we arrive. We were to meet up with the General, who is going to lead the charge. I do not like this general. All because of a slight misunderstanding involving his daughter and I, he...
He refused to let me use my blade this battle.

It is only an old silver long sword, but Ngorugas and I have been fighting for nearly four hundred years. It's managed to hold together that long. Even my cold heart is stirred when I see Ngorugas. Truly, it has been the "Man-master" for a long time.

Instead, I was given an iron bow and 50 arrows. How am I meant to make a dint in the dwarves with this pathetic sting flinger? I hate the general so much.

But now, we march. We march, and the horns have been blown. I am leading a small cohort of green greenies, and the general rides on his jabberers. There are trolls everywhere, a shaggy grey-green mess of goblin-like humanoids barely smart enough to know when they're being stabbed.

General Discussion / Melbourne Bay12ers Unite!
« on: March 01, 2012, 05:25:34 am »
So I was thinking, maybe we Bay12ers who are studying/living in Melbourne could meet up occasionally for a coffee or a good ol' fashioned DF sesh. :P

I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, plus I'm travelling from one side of the city to another so it shouldn't be hard for me to meet up in the city.

There's some really cheap places to eat, as well. Like the Crossways restaurant, which is PERFECT for students ($5.50 for all you can eat vegetarian North Indian food) or there's a pizza shop on Flinders St which is great too. We could even meet up at Minotaur. :P

I'd really like this idea (plus I'd love to expand my circle of friends, which is looking rather shallow at the moment).

7
So, I thought about how here at Bay12, we're a pretty darn intelligent bunch. That got me thinking, what university subjects are we doing? And why?

Just today, I was accepted into a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Victoria University. I'm very happy. It's not my first preference, but it's up there!

What about you, Bay Twelve?

What do you want to do at uni, or if you are already there, what're you doing- or for those who have finished, what did you do?

And why?

I think that it would be greatly interesting to note how much of the forum population aim to be tertiary educated.

8
Well everyone, thanks to Kilroy, this is gonna be a Neverwinter Nights Let's Play. I have both expansions, and I'm also quite new to the whole NWN and D+D style of gaming.

This should be fun...

The half elf awakes... she cannot remember her name, but she knows that once she was a great singer of epics to the people.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What is her name (and her gender, doesn't have to be female)? And how morally sound was she in her life before now? Was she Chaotic Good? Lawful Evil? Or somewhere in between?

General Discussion / What's the origin of your usernames?
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:20:20 pm »
Well, an idea suddenly occurred to me. Some of you have fairly unique usernames, and others just names- but they all have origin stories.

I'll start.
Way back in 2010 when i was playing Runescape, they introduced the  'display names' thing in which you could rename your character. I ran through a list of names (made up, researched, dog-language'd):
Llansing (from a game I had made)
Ruadh (too scottish for a fantasy game)
Acherus (taken)
Reudh (variant on Ruadh to make it sound easier- it's pronounced royth - the dh is a soft th as in 'that'.)
Rauthaz (proto-German for 'Red')
Amhara (arabic for The Red One).

I settled with 'Lord Reudh', but as I didn't have membership i couldn't change the name. Hence, i began to use it elsewhere.
This forum, however, is the first place I've used 'Reudh' without the Lord. The avatar I currently have is an image of 'Lord Reudh' as I envisioned him when I used to roleplay- he's no lord but he insists on being called Lord, and for the most part, people humour him.

I go by a few other names. Peregrine- a character I designed for a friend's game he was making as a final assessment- a little pineapple shaped vaguely kirbyish character who fought barehanded and by rolling. Fenrir- the 'world eating wolf' struck a chord with me. Ungoliant- the 'spider that overpowered the dark lord Morgoth' also sounded pretty cool.

DF Community Games & Stories / The Fall of Zalisiden
« on: November 10, 2011, 04:45:29 am »
From the diary of Zaneg Larmomuz the Barricaded Recluse of Justice, ex-military commander of Zalisiden.

We received report of a siege. Pah, if only I could help them, but this accursed injury means I'm a civilian! It isn't the dwarven way to let cripples be relieved!
Scouts indicate a report of nine lashers led by an elite crossbowgoblin. This is worse than anything we have yet faced- though I remain calm.
My replacement, Sarvesh, sounded the alert in the Great Horn of Zalisiden- everyone who was outside ran back, but for one dog which fought valiantly before being killed. Even poor Rith Woundordered made it inside.
Then, a tremulous voice shouted "THE LEVER IS JAMMED!" We could not raise the lever to seal ourselves away. No one was able to get near it.

This gets worse! Further reports indicate that the goblins are mounted on fell creatures of the underground. That makes 20 total invaders--- (here the hand trails off and resumes in a much more scrawled hand)

I fear for our lives now. I have killed nearly thirty and yet I feel fear. A squad reported more. At last count, including the nine we captured in the initial advance, there was 106 invaders. A squad of spearman, a squad of crossbowmen, a squad of lashers, a squad of swordsman, and a squad of trolls. All but the trolls were mounted.
We have already lost many, the death toll is already eight. Many of them were my students, dwarves I had shared a drink with... I am saddened by their deaths but pleased that they may have been guided into Sarvesh Canyongorge, Etur, or Ral Ivoryfortune's arms...

The invaders have breached the fort. Nearly every squad member has been killed. Statues have been toppled, things destroyed. It is looking grim. I have once more been made military commander as a last ditch attempt. Me, and the nine legendary miners are the Barricaded Allies. They wield their picks with devastating force, and I with my blade.
I combine the strongest of Zalisiden's civilians into a ramshackle minutemen service.

What chance do we have? We just barely are holding. Just barely.
With a croak, my dear friend Urvad Narvabok, the mayor and one of the ones who journeyed with me to found Zalisiden dies. He was pierced through the chest, poor lad.
His wife sees him fall, takes her five children and runs to the special place... Down in the caverns, there is a spot she builds... she ought to be safe there. Solon Odkol, another of our friends has fallen.
I am scared, what will happen? Thankfully I have not been noticed as I limp along to retrieve my blade from where I left it.

One of the cave crawlers has become a brutally strong killer. It's now "the Bad Serpent of Hardiness." I named it, thinking it appropriate. The remaining 110 civilians cower in our basement floor.

In case you are wondering how I am writing this, I have a tablet hidden in my beard which I am inscribing this onto. On my laborious way to pick up my blade, I was confronted by a huge troll. I attacked with the only weapon I could, with my <<maple crutch>>. My strength hasn't left me! I staved in its head with a single strike.

((OOC:Seriously, Zaneg is STRONG. 34 total kills, high master in everything trained legit. She scratched the troll in the head, bruising the brain, which knocked it unconscious. Then she struck it in the head with her crutch, and killed it.))

I hope we can do it, we're still taking massive casualties. Every now and then I have to send a reverberation to the floor below with my beard sonar to tell more civilians to come help.

GOOD! We have done it! The siege is broken! The cowardly goblins have fled! Thank Etur, Thank Sarvesh in all his furry glory, thank Ral! Thank Kogsak that he intervened!

Oh, I have the unenviable task of overseeing the cleanup and averting any unhappiness. Thankfully the only dwarf who looks to be snapping is unconscious and dying, not that I would wish that on another being but if he were awake he would have to be dealt with.

Signing out Diary, hoping that Zalisiden lives another day. The cleanup from this siege is going to be long...

DF Modding / Reudh's Creatures
« on: October 24, 2011, 07:35:41 pm »
Ok, so I'm making a whole raft of creatures. Most of them are modifications of other ones, but they work. I'll add them here.
I'll post the raws later when I get home from TAFE.

The Mortare is working perfectly, and is often butchered by other civs (<<mortare leather backpack>>).
The Drazard works perfectly too.
The Drazardmen are working perfectly, though I think I should tweak their civ a bit.
The Gluaks are unfinished, i haven't finished their CIV_ENTITY yet.
The Llamamen are also unfinished, i need to tidy up some tags.
The Zalifen work perfectly except for the fact that I didn't define their horn to have tissue, so it defaults to a pointy bit of skin, rendering the Gore attack nearly useless. 'You gore the alpaca with your horn in the lower body, but the attack glances away!'
The Heidentje work perfectly except they don't bite despite having a mouth. They are basically just upper bodies with a face on the body and hands and feet directly attached. I haven't had them show up in any fort yet, though they should be spawning alright.

I'm planning on making more after this, keep your eyes peeled!

MORTARE
The Mortare is not unlike an evil macaque. It's tameable, highly agile and has a mildly poisonous bite that causes extreme numbness and a small fever. Very weaponisable if wild.
Put the data in the spoiler into 'CREATURE_MODS.TXT' - if you don't have one, make one, and at the top add "creature_mods"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

DRAZARD
A modified, smaller dragon. The Drazard is flightless, friendly, and lacks the Dragon's immunity to firebreath and the ability to breathe fire. They're very peaceable and they're quite a bit smaller than a dragon, but still strong. They have hair, but it never seems to appear...

As with the Mortare, put it in 'creature_mods.txt'
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

DRAZARDMAN
The Drazard's humanoid counterpart is a fairly friendly creature. They live in plains, and are more or less identical to humans in their civilisation. They retain the Drazard's claws and head, but are otherwise human. I've had fun experiences in a pocket world with max savagery and max beasts that had several civilisations- Humans were wiped out, dwarves and elves were clinging to survival after a massive war and goblins were near extinct.
The Drazardmen had just the one hamlet, guarded by a single Drazardman. He defended the village singlehandedly against Titans, Giants and other evils before dying of old age at year 60.

Put this in 'creature_mods.txt'
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And put this in 'entity_mods.txt'
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

GLUAK
I made this for a friend. They're a highly intelligent, friendly but violent race of squid like creatures that live on land. They have eight tentacles to move about on, of which six the game considers legs and two arms. They are raiders, primarily.

LLAMAMAN
Humanoid llama. What it says on the tin. Can be sheared, i think. Can be tamed, and will most likely end up mayor of your fort.

ZALIFEN
An evil goblin-like humanoid. They're more evil than goblins. They're baby snatchers- they steal ANY race, even their own. They're a bit bigger than other humanoids, and they have a single horn on their head that secretes a mildly paralytic poison. I have generated a world with Zalifen in it, and they frequently are found to be stealing children. They have their own language, too.

Life Advice / Things that made you happy today.
« on: September 07, 2011, 06:38:38 am »
So I thought I'd start this thread. Life Advice is filled with sadness and I thought i'd perk it up a bit.

Today, despite breaking up with my girlfriend late last night, I had a very interesting day.
I caught the train then the tram to a modelling/acting agency (I've got 5 1/2 years amateur theatre training) and had a very successful interview, though I now have to pay $AUD500 to set up with them. :/

Flirted with by no less than THREE girls. On the tram, a punk with pink hair and no less than 25 piercings and spacer earrings flirted with me (I know because she sook me out on a lightly packed tram and started to talk). Her name was "Raven". She asked if I was a hipster because I wear a flat cap with my really-quite-trendy-if-I-do-say-so-myself prescription glasses but I said no- we talked for 20 minutes while the tram crawled up an incline. Got her number.
Then at the big main station in the city, a girl with purplish hair asked me if a certain train was due on this platform, despite the fact it was on an infobox above our heads and there had been an announcement about it 10 seconds before, so it must've been an icebreaker. :D We talked for a little while. Then she hopped off at the next station. I spied an old friend of mine a carriage up who I haven't seen in many years, and we had had URST back then. So I greeted her and we caught up- she flirted like crazy. When we got to our stop at the end of the line, I stayed and talked to her (i was walking home, she got picked up) and I said "Hey, we should hang out one of these days" and she looked me straight in the eye and said "I'd really like that."

PLAYA...
Plus next week I have another job interview, this time with a call centre.

14
So, I saw various comments on dwarven heroes. Among the most famous would be Tholtig Cryptbrain, and Cacame Awemedinade (though he was no dwarf, he was honoured as one).

I felt like making a thread where the community can talk about their fortress heroes or ones shown in their engravings. I'll start off.
BOLD the name of the fortress and of the heroes. Have an image if possible, though not required.

Creaturebolt:
This ill fated fortress survived goblin sieges, a hydra and a dragon before tantrum spiraling.
It had THREE heroes:

"Stuart the Hardy" Boatleg the Unbridled Doom - After the entire military of Creaturebolt had fallen to a tantrum spiral and Lethari Jadeflame the dragon, the Mayor took charge and singlehandedly defeated Lethari, before dying himself. The finishing move was a kick to the skull after he had lost two arms- shortly after which Stuart died.

"Kyle the Intimidated" (can't remember his last name) - Inflicted the majority of the wounds to Lethari, among which were a fractured skull, a broken leg and about thirty other fractures. He was later killed by a RHESUS MACAQUE who got a title as a result.

Lorbamadas - War Grizzly who fought Lethari - losing a leg to Lethari was his undoing. He inflicted multiple wounds to the dragon as the first retreat order was sounded and died after escaping Lethari's hungry grasp, safely inside creaturebolt.

Boldropes:
My current fortress. I have reclaimed it once- lost the fortress due to the Boldropes Civil War. It's now going fine. It has a number of heroes.

"Kurok'Taa" Fencedramparts - Defeated two titled trolls while unarmed. Hasn't got a title yet, but he's close.

Zefon Anvilwind the Silvery Dale - A hammer lord with eleven notable kills- a titled troll, Osnusm the Spit of Mines the forgotten beast and nine others.

Iteb Taperedpaged the Soaked Bowls of Paint - our incredibly fast moving militia commander / axe lord. He has twenty three notable kills, among them two forgotten beasts and a swamp titan. He singlehandedly defended the fort from a minor goblin ambush, fighting seven goblins at once before becoming tired and retiring to his bed.

"Sparkzlite" Mengnelas - a militia captain who got himself just about torn to shreds by a giant rat. He managed to hold off a giant rat infestation alone until Iteb and Revax came to his aid. As of now he is limping around, doing mechanic duties with a crutch and three red wounds.

"Revax" Rumourtheatre the Copper Pinnacle of Summits - Eight notable kills, plus fought alone vs. Gulgun Hogknot the flying spitting forgotten beast and won with no more than a scratch.

Reg Dangerlancers - While not a fighter, Reg defended herself and her child against six crundles while unarmed. She is also responsible for the smithing of armour and weapons for Boldropes and makes only the best adamantine objects.

Minkot Adiloslan - a War Troglodyte (yes, modded) who protected a baby from a giant earthworm. She suffered a broken hand in the process but now fights exclusively WITH that hand... (?)

Shorast Idencatten - War cougar, pet of Revax who came to Revax's aid during a siege by distracting attention from Revax. Shorast fought three goblins alone and won, suffering no more than two cuts.

Ral Whippedshake - War Elephant- pet of Iteb who helped him during the fight against a swamp titan by goring the titan repeatedly so Iteb could shake off the Stunned status and fight back, allowing him to defeat the titan.

ITALIC BOLD means engraving heroes- ones that are worthy of an engraving. I've only got one.

Kogan Guiltpassionate - A dwarven hero of the Silvers of Clinching who fought an elf druid (Ola Pinedrove) alone during the Great War of the Virginal Artifact and the Boar of Stances. This war lasted from year 50 in this world to nearly 400- resulting in a dwarven victory.  :D
(the current year is 558 and there has been peace with the nearly obliterated elven nation since)
Kogan smashed a front tooth of the druid before killing him- the engraving is almost always 'Kogan is striking a menacing pose' 'Ola is striking a plaintive pose' referring to the smashing of Ola's upper left tooth during the duel of Kogan Guiltpassionate and Ola Pinedrove in 233.
Out of the four hundred or so engravings in Boldropes, around 75 are of Kogan and Ola.

That guy was such a dwarfy dwarf.

What about you, the good denizens of Bay 12? Have you any heroes of your own fortresses? Adventurers need not apply.
