DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Crazy constructions
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:31:38 am »

Quite possibly.  I'm still rather new, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone beat me to the punch  :P

-Aaron, rather nubbish in his own way

Edit: Ah ha!  You are right good sir! http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/movie-614-levelcollapse  However, it could just be me, but I think his map is a little smaller than the ones I use.  It could just be me.

-Aaron, not sure of much at the moment

That map was just a 2x2 area. What I haven't done yet that occurred to me, is to get every level destroyed in the one go. You will notice in the video that the 2x2 stairway and all stairs on the edge were destroyed when they fell (as opposed to solid wall which just dropped a level), the same thing happens with just mined out sections. So if you mine out every floor (not just the bottom like I did) along with channelling out the sides you should get quite the pot-hole.

Picks.... bring lots of picks (I had 30 and needed more once I tried for the full collapse).

While I have indulged in generating random worlds for the sake of it, generally I do the opposite - I love the idea of being loyal to one world and learning all about it and developing it alone.

Let us know if they actually do anything. With nothing sieging us except goblins in the current version I'm not even sure the elves will harass you.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Waterwheel Help
« on: June 17, 2008, 07:31:48 am »
The best perpetual motion machine I know of (space and reliability-wise) is built on an aquifer and is used in this movie. Watch the movie on 400 FPS so you don't die of boredom, or skip to 2:30 to see the design and at 5:30 to see it in action.

The top pump is just acting as a wall and gearbox, it's the bottom one doing the work. The machine is driven more by water flowing from the space under the water wheels to the empty spot created by the pump, rather than by forcing water through the wheels (water is replenished by aquifer walls around the wheels).  Because of this, adding more water wheels to the side works poorly so build multiple modules like that and connect them if you want a huge engine room.

The design should work without an aquifer if you make sure there's plenty of water in it and that the water isn't escaping, although you may want to cut it down to just 2 wheels attached to the pump for reliability (I haven't tested this).

Hahaha, The Jungles of Dying.  ;D I was surprised you didn't joke about it/notice it.

It was accurate on the first go, but we'll see about the rest.

Shh, you've ruined it for everyone else now :P.

Wow, when I reclaim the elephants are still there and named to ambush me. 2 of them wiped out the 7 axedwarves I had and buggered off on the second reclaim. Those things really are scary to low level military dwarves.

To make life hard on yourself Grendal make sure you play on a 2x2 map. I think you always only have one animal group wandering around, so the bigger the map the less likely they are to stumble across you.

In my current fortress a Baron came with his Baroness consort. Sadly the Baron could not handle the lack of attention from the other dwarfs who only seemed to be interested in surviving and building a monumental castle rather than catering to the demands of nobility, so he committed suicide. A few months later his widowed wife gave birth to a son, who shall never know his father. Also his mother might pull the wrong lever once he learns to walk....

On my third go I found a world with a terrifying tropical forest. I tried the site in the picture and it started off with 3 skeletal elephants and a zombie elephant that proceeded to kill all 7 of my dwarfs when they got close. Fear not, I regenerated the world with the same seed and without any player made fortresses for you.

Maybe it's just me, but the marker on the world map is tricky to spot - it's near the bottom right.

Download already generated world here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/51636024/3ea4e72f/region4.html?dirPwdVerified=815053fb
(I assume you know, but in case you don't, unzip and put this folder in /DFfolder/data/save/)
(Also for anyone browsing old threads this link will probably die if this post is over a month old)

It took 71 rejected maps and at most 5 minutes to generate for me. You can race the download and your computer's ability to generate if you like.

Created in DF v0.27.176.38c.

Every time to force DF to close, a little part of your world dies.

With my first world I was pretty happy with Ctrl-Alt-Del to restore good dwarves being lost to cave floods (in fortress mode) and such. It wasn't for a while that I encountered inflate error 3 (if those are even related) but over time some zones became impossible to enter (A dwarven town in adventure mode and a couple of fortress start locations would cause the game to crash). I loaded backups of the world when it became impossible to use but otherwise didn't.

I've started a second world with a fresh extract of the game files. This time I will restore from a backup whenever my game is forcefully closed (by crash or by hand).

Traditionally you limit immigration by going into your dwarf fortress folder, then go into the data folder, then into the init folder and change the population limit in init.txt.

However your best way of limiting migration, is to mistake them for incoming goblins with your water defence....

How, physically, does a single bolt shot into the chest of someone rushing straight at you puncture both lungs *AND* pierces the heart?

They are rushing straight toward you with their body at an angle, and they love you.

Please don't stress Toady over this trivial problem when he can be stressing about army implementation  :).

I believe if your dwarves are carrying seeds in their bare hands and they're in the rain, they lose the seed. You will notice lots of red "Cancelled job store item: item lost or destroyed" if this is the case.

That's about the only thing that comes to mind.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do goblins swim?
« on: February 29, 2008, 03:44:00 am »
Trolls however can swim (or at least don't drown), and will bust your open floodgate so that you can't close it again if you let them get next to it - fun times.

For complete overkill, I back up the entire Dwarf Fortress directory (.exe and all).

For your enjoyment:
The great flood

No dwarves drowned in the making of this movie.
