You'll notice that the shield is in front of him, and would be too large to hold and shoot at the same time.
Bucklers should be allowable with two-handed weapons: they're not very big at all. I also propose a Tower Shield, which may or may not be a Human-only shield, that is too bulky to bash with but provides a 35 block. (Shield is 20 and Buckler is 10).

I started a new embark somewhere I thought would be a good place for a bunch of dwarfs to die a horrible death in a few years. There was a extremely high (*) cliff nearby and I thought it might make a decent place. As I was looking at it I saw a red squiggle and I thought, "Oh a mini desert." Turns out it was magma. A magma tower about 1800z levels.

Upon starting it rapidly began to flood the plain that the wagon had started on. The motivated dwarfs were able to get all their gear to high ground before the magma reached them and I was wondering if it would cover the entire map before my fps dropped to 2 and I gave up waiting.

Anyway, I wondered if this was a bug. A 1800z level volcano tower seems odd and my map didn't mark an active volcano.

On an unrelated note... is there a way to replay a map w/o reclaiming?
1) It's a bug. I've found floating islands of Slade before.
2) Yes. Copypasta the world and rename it "World 2", or whatever the next highest number you have is.

They get like that. Their wooden spears are actually dangerous to unarmoured dwarves, and antmen are naturally armoured and strong.

I've never had a goblin pierce full Bronze Mail + Leather, even with Iron weapons. Metal strength is less important than the force applied to it, or should be.

I go for the easiest metal avaliable, to the point of modding in Brass to be useable when I have a lot of Sphalerite.

I once embarked on a shear cliff overlooking an evil lake. Needless to say, I bulit my fort on it, and would drop prisoners/nobles/weak naked mole dogs 40Zs onto zombie Pike. Nothing survived to get killed by the fish. Disapointed, I rebuilt my fortress lower. 5 z-level drop into the lake. Much more fun.

It's overkill.

This is Dwarf Fortress.
Overkill is wasted on the Goblins and Elves. A giant statue that spews magma? Sure. A map-long hallway filled with party favors for the clowns? Great.

All I ever get are WIAs. No KIAs. Hint: Mail Shirt + Leather Amour > Mail Shirt + Breastplate.
While a dwarf is in a hospital, that is his "job" and it has top priority. He's still in the military.

A dwarf has a "crazy meter" while in a mood. When that meter hits ten, he grabs the first fluffy wambler he can find and starts going all Punisher on the rest of the fort. As soon as he grabs something he needs, that meter goes back to zero.

Steel isn't worth the effort. For the same ammount of fuel/time, you could armour/arm twice the number of dwarves in Iron or Bronze, and seeing as how the most armour anything you'll ever fight will have is an Iron Breastplate, you don't need Steel: It's overkill. Shiny, but not practical. I've never encountered a Goblin, Human, or Elf that couldn't be killed by an Iron Spear: why waste time with steel? Funobtanium is much easier to mine out, much more valuable, and sharp/light enough to be worth the effort.
Plus, Steel makes crappy blunt weapons.

Upright Spikes can be fallen on for the same effect. I, personally, don't use them. I have a pit trap, my signature, that drops them 10 z-levels into a pit of War Naked Mole Dogs. Most die on impact, the lucky ones.

If that spawn was in 31.18, and was in the default tilesets so I could tell what I was looking at, I would download it. It seems like an awesome map for the giant goblin tower I've been working on.
