DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Can't plant seeds.....
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:07:54 am »
I have an odd problem. I just bought some whip vine seeds from the elves, and I DO have a couple plots for aboveground crops already prepared, but I can't seem to be able to plant these seeds. The option for growing whip vines does not appear on any farm plot, even through I can grow longland grass(which I also got) just fine. Ideas?

You need to build an archery range as well and have them train at it for them to train up marksdorf. Trust me, though they are really awesome when you do get them trained up so it's worth the hassle. In Wheelbaldness, my captain of the guard(who is always a marksdorf for me) and his squad one-shotted 12 clowns before being overrun

Also got lots of iron, but no flux for me so the question is even more relevant; when I get my metalworks going, which weapon is best used for iron?

.....Is it me, or is anyone ELSE getting flashbacks to middle school and Ray Bradbury? Because this seems like one giant neon-red flashing light to the slippery slope that leads to midnight readings and Firemen al la Fahrenheit 451

The Goblins FINALLY decided to show up in force. 4 squads consisting of trolls, bowgobs, lashers and speargobs led by a swordmaster. I pull everyone inside and let them hit the first line of traps on my bridge...and laugh my ass off as not even one reaches the line of cage traps behind it. it's raining goblins!(And assorted goblin parts; serrated discs, even green glass ones, tend to really chunk invaders)

Meanwhile, while this is going on, I'm opening up the caverns to explore, and having to temporarily halt walling off a small area in the first cavern, I'd stationed my recruit spear squad to guard the entrance. This is important, since I'd actually forgotten that there's a passage from the first caverns down to the second, and there's been an FB chilling in the second cavern layer since forever. I check back from the action above to see a lot of blood around the recruits and a flashing corpse! However, none of the blood was from the now speardorfs, and the FB was only a deadly spittle, so no worries about them suddenly dieing since they managed to block or dodge all the spit thrown their way. Thanks for being a training dummy, Thol!

Heh, you know, with all the lessons learned on this fort, (like how to PROPERLY do a dodge me bridge; I'd need a second, regular entrance for traders so that whenever a diplomat comes I don't have to keep rebuilding my traps if I ever decide to piss off that civ) I've decided to finish outfitting my warriors in candy and dig into the HFS to take on clowns! Will post the final battle of Wheelbaldness soon!

What's the best way of creating a reserve of bolts? I'm finding my legendary marksdorfs are chewing through bolts like you wouldn't believe! I'd like for them to have a reserve so that when an emergency comes up I don't find them meleeing because the used up all the bolts in the fort at the archery ranges

'Accidentally' kill the most popular dwarf in the fort. !!FUN!! will happen.

Heh, not hard, I'd just burrow him under the atom smasher/Bridge-A-Pault at the end of my dodge-me bridge. However, I've NO experience with dealing with tantrum spirals(Never had a fort far enough along, and have something bad happen to it), and I'm not looking to learn how with this fort(maybe next fort!).

abandon the fortress and adventure mode into it

Ummmm, no, I'm looking to continue this fort, but if and when I DO abandon(or get destroyed), that might be a possibility.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What Now?
« on: January 21, 2012, 08:34:49 am »
It's the close of year seven in Wheelbaldness. I've got the metal industry humming along producing candy, my food stockpiles are way overstuffed, I'm finishing up the dodge-me bridge into my fort(after having had to rip out most of the traps from discovering that the elf diplomat renders elf ambushers trapvoid to traps built before his visit    >:(), and my military is full of utter badasses(Seriously, I have 5 legendary marksdorfs!). Now the question becomes, what should I do now? It seems the gobs don't want to travel the distance to my fort( they ARE listed on the civ menu, but I've only had one siege and exactly one ambush in the 7 years of the fort, and that was only one squad both times!). I've pissed off the elves into attacking me(of course!), but they've only sent one ambush, though this is the first year of their assault; maybe next year would be more hopeful for action!

But meanwhile, what should I do to relieve the boredom of waiting for the elves to show up? Clear the caverns? Start designing my welcome for the clowns? I ask you dear forumers for ideas on the question of what next!

One of my legendary armorers just wend mood and grabbed a candy wafer and a few rock blocks! This will(hopefully) be good....

...Well crap, it's a low boot. Ah well, it's still an artifact adamantine boot, I'll give it to my guard captain(so that makes it all my squad leaders have artifacts)

should I even bother stripping the elves of their weapons before pitting them in the arena(Bow elves being the exception of course!)? I mean, I Know there IS adifference between a training weapon and a wooden one, but does it make any impact at all against my bronze clad recruits?

Scary moment for my miner: While digging out more candy in preparation for my main sword squad to start receiving candy gifts, he hit a small(one tile) magma pocket within the vein! However, all is well, as the only thing to happen was that his lip melted. Seriously, this guy takes magma to the face and all that happens is his lower lip melts, and he doesn't even catch fire?! he didn't even have any wounds listed in the (v) (w) menu, despite trailing blood for a good bit!

Also, my duchess sure likes them buckets! Ever since she was a baroness, she's been constantly mandating buckets and forbidding export of buckets; not that I mind, of course, since it's easily done and she's not too demanding otherwise(she occasionally calls for lead items instead, but since I have a metric fuckton of galena....)

A big D decided to stop by Wheelbaldness! I immediatley ordered everyone inside so that it could run over my traps and perhaps be caged....but unfortunately for it, it arrived at the same time as the yearly caravan(also, it's only year 307, so dragons aren't nearly as scary I guess). The caravan guards killed it without any wounds at all! I was hoping to tame it, but oh well, dragon roasts all around!

LOL. My captain of the guard was hanging outside beyond the walkway leading into my fort when he spotted an ambush...and drove it off all by himself. It helps that he's a grand master marksdorf(which reminds me, time to churn out more crossbows now that my countess is legendary+5 weaponsmith), though what I'm laughing about is that they ran without taking a single casualty. I'm thinking it went like this:

Goblin Leader: "It is time for us to raid this fort! Let us bathe in the blood of our enemies!"

Goblins: "HURRRGH! Attack!"

Later.....

Goblin leader:"HAH! These weaklings only send one out to challenge us! We shall drink from their skulls tonight!"

Goblins:"HAHAHAHA!"

Guard Captain:.....*Raises crossbow, and nonchalantly aims at a tree the leader is standing next to and rapidly writes in bolts: "Sit on it and give it a turn" in very tight spacing, all without one mistake*

Goblin Leader:"..........Maybe this wasn't such a good idea......RUN!!!!!!!!!!"
Goblins:*Run away*

How do I upload worldgen details again? rather do that than go through the hassle of duplicating the world to find this site again. It isn't hard to find this site or many others like it; just look for the massive river bisecting the continent.
