General Discussion / Tim Hortons
« on: November 01, 2010, 03:25:25 pm »
Tim Hortons is a major part of Canada, but what about other countries? What is it like to live without one? Or, if you live in Canada or near a Tim Hortons, what do you think of it?

Discuss Tim Hortons and anything else you consider even remotely related to it.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Intra-timeline memo (SBURB-themed IRC RP)
« on: October 21, 2010, 08:08:52 pm »
Spoiler: Game description (click to show/hide)

CURRENT Qwertyuiopas [CQW] RIGHT NOW opened memo on board Forum Games and Roleplaying.
CQW: Ugh. Where to start.
CQW: As those of you who have been keeping up to date know by now, there is a massive swarm of meteors falling on the Bay 12 Games Forum.
CQW: So far, they are only hitting the announcements, but that could change any time.
CQW: Some brave users have ventured close to see the destruction, and apparently all of the posts that have been hit have been completely deleted!
CQW: We need to do something. I have opened this memo in hopes that we can save the rest of the Forums, and possibly get a warning to past users to stay clear of the worst areas.

Roll To Dodge / Five
« on: September 10, 2010, 06:03:02 pm »
For the first time ever, I am starting a game with a plan! That means that I know when it will end!

You are one of Five time travellers, sent back in time to seek a better history. At Five points in the past, you will have Five turns to influence a key event that will chance the history of humanity. (For my sanity, there are not 32 ends, there are an entirely accidental Five, splitting into 10 since the last choice is a free option. The first four, however, you will have to work for. Some choices can be reached by multiple paths. I have all of them planned out in a 813 by 931 PNG image.)

Every character has up to Five skills:
 - Remote manipulation: Weak telekenesis.
 - Opinion adjustment: Change peoples' minds!
 - Minor foresight: React faster because you somewhat know what is coming.
 - Mechanical marvel: good with machinery.
 - Temporal instability: better chance to survive death.

Each skill will add +1 to related rolls.

Skills are decided by:
 - One free choice.
 - All other skills get two dice rolls. If either is a Five (11 in 36 chance), you get that skill.

If I am unable to continue, I will pass my note(s) along to whoever will take over. Every possibility is planned for.

Entrants: Pick a skill, and optionally give a character name. First Five will play.

Edit: I don't mind sharing the plan of what the game may become, but anyone who sees it will be unable to play in this or any other games of it. Part of the fun will be that you do no know what might happen, except by past games, if at all.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Spoken text
« on: September 05, 2010, 07:25:42 pm »
this is a simple game
Everything is said and it must be written off by a text of speech program preferably one that has not been made and finely tuned to your voice

I mean the speech recognition not takes two speech .

I expect to see this many fairly funny misinterpretations

Creative Projects / The Stories
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:08:46 pm »
This is a community effort to write stories. Rather than everyone participating to write one story, every addition may start from any other post(s), or none at all. It will probably become something like a CYOA, where the goal is more to make every branch an interesting story rather than create an adventure for the readers.
To make it easier to navigate, it is reccomended that every post that adds to a story would identify any ones that it continues from(a hyperlink, a quote, or the post number would be sufficient, but any other method could be used, or even none at all), and it would be useful if earlier posts were edited to contain references to any continuations that the author liked.

I will try to keep a list of starting posts here.

Creative Projects / Interconnected community pixel art, the second
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:06:18 pm »

This one shall be more freform, with the only condition that submitted images will only be removed/replaced with the author's permission or community consensus.

However, the coordinates should be fairly evident this time. In the intrest of saving time, I have not made a unique version of each unknown tile, but the letterbar should help people know where everything is. The rows are 1 to 8, 1 at the top, 8 at the bottom.

No .jpg, as it loses quality, animations should be discussed prior to creating them, as the end image will be a higher quality if it isn't forced to use .gif. I'll accept them, but remember that PNG does not animate, and GIF has a 255 colour maximum(256 without transparency, but that might be required for animation). If a palette of 255 colours is decided on, of course, everything will look consistant without any lost quality, and animations will have no impact on the final image quality.

The dimensions are 64x64.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Last post loses!
« on: July 19, 2010, 08:48:47 pm »
This is a simple game, but modified slightly.

Every 50 posts is a round(one page at 50 posts per page).

Each post in a round is worth a number of points.

That number is how many posts follow it, until either the last post of the round, or your next post, whatever is smaller. (double-posting or posting last gets 0 points for your post(in the case of double posting, your first of the two is 0))

Your score for the round is your lowest post score multiplied by the product of your two highest.
(lowest * highest* 2nd highest) (duplicates count as 1, so if you only post twice in a round, it is 1 * first post * second post, rather than the square of the lower one multiplied by the higher one)

In that way, double-posters and the last poster per page get *nothing* while everyone else who posts at least once gets at least one point.

Finally, to make losing more bearable, the last poster of the round gets a *1.5 multiplier for the next, though they get no points for the current round.

I will not keep track of scores, someone else will have to, by ironically posting here.

Roll To Dodge / Transforumice: the unofficial RTD
« on: June 24, 2010, 09:13:14 am »
This will be big.

Specifically, it would be like an MMO compared to other RTDs in terms of player count.

So, I will reserve this post for news, the next three for player lists, and the fifth for the actual introduction. Then I will give it an actual title.

Stories tell of a city of metal and steam that soars across the skies. Many have set out to seek it, but none have more than seen it. This is not one of their stories. Ancient rumor tells that the city was once a peaceful trading hub, before it went silent and it's once-great civilization disappeared, leaving no knowledge of the constructions of their airborne vehicles. More dedicated historians estimate that the city was active until fourteen or fifteen centuries ago. What they cannot understand is what happened to it. The truth is, 1438 years ago, a coordinated sabotage made it inhabitable, and all survivors fled to lesser civilizations. All survivors, that is, except you, [potential player]. You are one of the maintainers, technicians dedicated to keeping the city working. There are quite a few of you, surviving in an emergency shelter, within the city. Immediately after it was known of the traitorous event, you, as the primary maintainer of your section, following standard protocols, rushed to the primary control room. However, a burst steam pipe caused you to evacuate down the maintainence tunnels, the group eventually arriving at the shelter you occupy now. Two of you died as a pipe ruptured just before they could make it into the shelter. The door sealed automatically, to release when the pressure in the corridor reaches habitable levels once more. As you are still within the city, and, thankfully, some of the systems are still functioning, you have not aged. You know that at least one of you was a traitor, though with the two dead outside, there is enough hope that the traitors are dead that none of you have killed each other in the centuries since.

Today (if it even is day, since you are far enough inside that there are no windows), shocking and somewhat disturbing news is discovered: The pressure outside the only door is dropping! This means that you can finally be free of this meagre shelter! However, the only thing that could explain this is that the primary reserve is dropping dangerously low. There is probably only a week or two left before the city cannot maintain flight and crashes.

During the many years, you have come to a consensus that the cause of the event was that one of the most closely guarded secrets had been discovered by people opposed to it. Long ago, it was realized that to keep the city fueled would take many resources, and to reduce the strain on traders to supply wood and coal, the council that guided the city started quietly seeking alternatives. A few hundred years later, one scientist found something abnormal: A spring where the water boiled despite the rock surface of the bottom not taving any crack or other place where the heat could have been coming from. In secret, a team of maintainers and the scientist unearthed a large crystal that radiated unbearable heat, but burned no fuel. They brought it back, careful that no-one would ever learn what they carried, and placed it in the primary boiler. For 500 years, it was unknown, and for a good reason: When it was revealed to the few who were allowed to know, most would only grudgingly remain quiet, as relying on, as they usually said, "evil magic, or something man was not meant to use" was unthinkable, but the cost if it was ever publicly know would only barely be worse.

----------------------------------------

Potential players:

Each player will have their own personal story PMed to them, and some *may* be traitors.

However, the goal of this game will primarily be about survival(escape or repair), rather than discovering who is a traitor. Traitors may have hidden goals, from simply escaping, to impeding repairs, or anything else. However, this is not Mafia or a RTD, so you may, if you wish, disregard them. Just be interesting about it, as it is common in movies and books for characters to change sides in some situations.

Maps will be provided, detailing the overall layout, what has been seen, and (PMed) what your character personally knows from before. No individual will have more than a fragment of knowledge. You may share PMs from me, even silently altered if you wish, but beware that others doing so may also edit them unprovably.

This game will not start immediately, as I must plan out at least a general layout of the game, histories, city, and make the initial maps.

Feel free to discuss this. And, if you really want, use any of it in your own games.

Edit: I should just point out that I intend this to be more of a turn-based roleplaying game. Neither unbearably serious nor overlly silly.

Creative Projects / Interconnected community pixel art
« on: April 09, 2010, 09:18:02 pm »
The idea behind this is simple:
Claim a square, and draw an image for it.

However, your image must connect with those around it at the time it is posted, so if someone uses an animation, you may have to animate yours to get it to line up properly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Numbering, for convenience, is alphabetic across the top and numeric down the side.

Remember, it must fit at the time that it is posted, so be wary of claiming a square bordering another claimed but unfinished square.

Finally, I will make a local copy of your work, so don't think that you can secretly alter it after. If you do, your square will be rejected and reset.

At any time you may request that any of your own squares are reset and made available.

Edit: since some programmers count from 0, but most non-programmers don't, I'll clearly state that the numbers are 1 to 8, and the letters a to h.

Edit again:
Before anyone has to ask, yes, you can draw more than one square, or even combine a few unclaimed squares into something larger.

However, to prevent malicious space hogging, you will be restricted to four claimed-but-not-posted squares at once, unless you simply ask and people generally don't mind. I guess I can't stop people from claiming more than they should, but I can't stop someone from ignoring your claim and making their own also.

Congratulations on being accpeted for second stage interviews for the jobs available as the transportation council of the dim butte research centre.

If you are hired, you will be part of the council in charge of designing and maintaining the tram network, to ensure it runs even in the event of inevitable research backfires, and thus we will only accept the best. The fact that you passed the first interview says much for you, so please take a moment to fill out a form

Creative Projects / My 7DRL: It's finished, I guess.

This is the world after heavy application of chaos(source: debugging buttons).

Now, I want your opinions: Should I also corrupt colouration of the tiles and/or have the corruption scramble the colours differently(so that it may increase them as well as decrease)?
