Creative Projects / Pizza
« on: October 24, 2009, 06:14:03 pm »
For the past month+, I have been making pizza once a week.

This may be the start of a delicious skill.

As a result, it is a bit of a side-project to develop that skill.

Anyone else make pizza, or have any comments or suggestions?
(Do not suggest this gets moved, it is a creative project more than a general discussion or life advice, and has nothing to do with games, belongs in Finally, and should not go in the place that must not be named in fear of derailing/condemning the entire discussion)

Creative Projects / {Ignore this: data storage}
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:18:26 pm »
Due to forgetting my USB drive, and also that here, at school, I just started discovering openGL's mathematical curves(I think it's called a b-spline?)

Solution? Post it here! I had to rediscover the windows API, and recreate the sequence for opening the window, and stuff. They never blocked bay12, though the title includes GAMES.

Although you could use my stuff, it is only a curve editor, with a slight modification that makes it work similar to how MSPA's spirograph was faked.

The purpose of this topic is to store plaintext data, especially C code, that would be perfectly legal and acceptable, and you would send it other ways if you could.

To prevent needless clutter, spoil any large data.

General Discussion / OOP in non-OOP programming languages
« on: October 17, 2009, 11:26:54 am »
Along with my ever-changing set of projects that I am currently interested in continuing the development of is a recent adddition of a shmup. Considering that I almost exclusively write in C, and this was one idea that would benefit from some sort of class, I ended up(for now?) writing everything as an object struct with an optional pointer to a data struct(void*), and a data type var to differentiate it's type. Is it a good idea to try something crazy like this, merging OOP into a non-OOP language?

You are in a bland squarish room, facing the only interesting detail, an object on the floor.

DF Community Games & Stories / Gusilbomrek (my first log-fortress)
« on: September 26, 2009, 09:41:49 am »
Having read all of these great stories(Nist Akath, Olonkulet), I felt the need to make my own. However, I have no experience in these things(Or even getting a fortress past the first few years without forgetting about it with the intention of coming back to it later but never quite finishing...), so I will be starting a fortress-log of my most recent, for writing practice and encouragement to keep playing.

If things go well, I may even let people request characters.

The writings of Zulban Tosidbubnus, Peasant and Expedition Leader, 28th Granite, 201, Mid-Spring:

It has been quite hectic since out arrival just a few weeks ago, and I haven't been able to write anything down until now. The miners immediately set to work carving an entryway into the mountain face, while the rest of us went scouting the nearby area. The miners are nearly done carving a massive shaft down into the depths, and across to the soil we saw earlier. Hopefully this will give our growers protection from any wildlife, especially from the chasm right next to our little settlement. Oddly, most of it has a natural roof. We heard that there were signs of magma in the nearby area, but none of out scouting attempts could find it. Maybe it is sealed like most of the chasm? I have taken up the axe as a woodcutter, but considering the distance to the nearest trees, and that we brought plenty of wood from earlier in out travels, I don't think I will take any risks to increase our woos supplies. Everyone has been quite busy removing the rock the miners dug out, and carrying some of our food into the small storage room that has been dug out. I gave the positions of Manager, Broker and Bookkeeper to Rovod Rėrithled, a fellow peasant. I must get back to work, everybody is very busy with moving the food.

For my avatar.

As of now I have finished the last delayed image and the next and final two will come as I finish them.

And with the last, I will be more than a mysterious nad likely ominous light at the end of a tunnel(with a dwarf entering)

General Discussion / The Capital City of GD
« on: September 08, 2009, 08:20:20 pm »
Well, the ancient kings have staked their claim of the lands of Finally, and it is finally time for the civilians to move in, after the mass exodus around the years of VN's vile presence.

In the fighting to seal that abomination(Though it wasn't that way when it started, as some of the old soldiers will say, late in the bars), the land was taken over by armies of the more peacefull citizens of VN, leaving the worst core in an ever-shrinking and ever-worsening corner of the vast plains of Finally that was once all it's.

It is now time to build, to create vast centres of civilization!

To establish trade with the mountainous colonies in Other Games, to exchange expert craftspeople with the deep underground worlds of Dwarf Fortress, and just maybe, someday we will be prosperous enough to have adventurers leave, seeking the great Bay 12 Games, rumored to be a flying castle willed with the best treasures possible but as unreachable as the stars high in the sky.

(In a while, I will create a map of General Discussion, and then add notable topics to the map, along with links to them, as they are the cities of GD, and then further expand this topic, allowing people to stake out claims and set up shop/home/whatever)

(Also, you other sections of Finally should start a "home" thread. It has the practical purpose of collecting the most notable others, and would be especially welcome in FG&R)

General Discussion / Government and code
« on: August 31, 2009, 11:56:33 am »
For any programmers here, compare any given governmant to a constantly evolving program.

They are constantly changing and building, and lately it has started to slow down from all that old deadweight.

For a computer program, that means it is time to refactor or rewrite some or all of it.

The question is, why hasn't that happened to a governmant yet?
And how can we make it happen(other than threaten magma floods and nuclear bombings)?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Fortress
« on: August 25, 2009, 10:34:35 am »
As I must leave for a few days(though with a laptop), I am starting this idea, and making it into a game later.

The plot:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and the rest of the army of many civilizations are assaulting a dwarven fortress. You are part of the special squad. The fortress has been condemned by buttertoast, the council of nations as it has been messing with stuff better left untouched, such as mass kitten murder, and plotting to flood the world, with magma, water, or both at many occasions.
As you enter, the floor drops out from beneath you and the rest of the squad, and after a short drop you find yourselves sealed in a room with no way of escape. The walls are an unusual alloy of steel with a faint light blue tint to it. It looks nearly indestructable. It appears the dwarves have made an alloy of steel and a very precious material.
For weeks you tried in vain to escape, all the while faintly able to hear the commotion of normal fortress life.
Then, an hour of pain and screaming coming through the walls.
Then silence.
Whatever happened, the stress of it damaged the room, and the floor crumbles beneath you. You fall again.
Blackness.
I only want serious RPers with alot of experience.
Signups are through PMs.
I will try to continue this over the next few days, but it might not be possible. However, I should be back and able to run it full-time by monday. I hope.
Edit: I will judge worthiness to play based on your application.
Creative Projects / Does the internet need it's own language?
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:52:38 pm »
Just a random idea, but could the internet be improved by the creation of a customized language?
The idea would be to make a purely written language that conveys all of the important details better and faster than languages based off of speech. It would use most of the keys on the keyboard, but would refrain from the use of [] and <>, to make it BBcode and HTML compatible.
This topic is for discussing and, just maybe, the creation of such a language.
The only idea that I have that I know would work out would be to prefix "words" with \, |, and/or / to show tense, so \(something) would be past-tense, |(something) would be present, and /(something) would be future, and they could be combined such as /\(something) as the english equivalent of I will have.
Criticism? Comments? Contributions?
Code: [Select]
Okay, here is how this goes: You post muse be contained within a [code] block.
It must also continue the ASCII train, matching track start/end to the previous post.
           _____
          /     \       You can put anything in, as long as the track
         | start |      continues out the bottom in at least one spot.
         |  ___  |      You can, if you really wanted to, even change
          \/|-|\/       the shape of it, as long as it continues on,
            |-|                   and on,
            |-|                   and on,
            |-|                   and on, and on, and on,
            |-|                   and so on.
            |-|   You are encouraged to intersperse your post(it can contain anything)
            |-|   with the track. As long as everything is within the [code].
Roll To Dodge / VGNWENNSD6RTDG
« on: August 14, 2009, 07:37:23 pm »
Welcome to the very generic, not well explained, no notes, single D6, RTD game.
The whole point is that I will NOT be keeping anything in-file on my computer, all rolls will be done with a physical D6, turns are whenever I feel like it, and there is no player list. Game mechanics will be created on the spot as nessecary.
Each important post will contain a link to the next one(edited in) and previous one, and an index may be added somewhere, but like everything else should be, it doesn't matter until it is needed and added, if it ever is.
Anyone can join, there is no player limit, and joining is possible until I declare it not so, so unless you give me a good reason to close/limit signups, you could potentially join on the last turn, if there even will be one.
