DF Gameplay Questions / Re: List of Vampire Facts
« on: March 21, 2012, 12:18:20 am »
What doesn't make sense to me, is how Vampires sleep without a coffin, and daywalk without getting toasted.

Yea, the coffin thing bothered me a bit too, so I always provide a nice "resting place" for any vampire I wall up for posterity. My bookkeeper really likes his solid brass sarcophagus.
uhm? now that you mention it, has anyone tried assigning a vampire to a tomb (coffin) instead of a (bed)room? maybe they do something funny....

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: ice
« on: March 16, 2012, 05:14:21 pm »
my place, has a time were ice is formed during winter... now this can be very bad when some one is hurt during winter, so i want to make a well, but i don't want to make a hole to deliver water to that well.

i know you can mine ice as rocks. so is there a way to mine ice, and make it melt inside your fortress to produce some water for my well thats around 3 levels below ground (but next to my hospital) or is that logicly impossible
ice stones melt into a unusable pool of water underground, what you can do is cave-in natural ice walls and they get insta-turned into water, check the getting water on glacier biome in the wiki.

I once, just for the lols, accused an animal of the crime, all the dwarves got a thought in the lines of: "is outraged at the ridiculous accusation of an animal for a crime"  :D

What should happen if when someone attacks their own civ they should be turned into an enemy of that civ, then be removed from that civ, that would stop the cascade from occuring. But it would be far less fun.
it should be handled by the justice system.

I've only managed to catch one once, and I didn't think of it until afterwards, but when the vampire is feeding and you get the Ñ symbol, is it possible to order a squad to kill them through the 's' menu?
I think you can 'k'ill order any creature, even a normal dwarf, but it will normally cause a loyalty spiral, not sure if when the vampire is feeding won't....

You can order the vampire to station and the feeding will get cancelled and the victim saved, though.

shouldn't dumping or forbidding the bin deassign it from the stockpile therefore clearing the number? I think I've seen dumped or forbidden bins with the number... and I'm certain that I have bins being used on a stockpile without the number...

DF Gameplay Questions / bin <#??> - bugged/broken bin??
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:42:46 pm »
I got some bins that have <#??> where ?? seems to be some random number, some of them are working fine while others just sit wherever they were left and won't be put to use, even though some stockpiles require bins...

so what's the deal? are they bugged? or are they worn out like clothes... in this case broken... like XXcedar binXX or something... if it's the later shouldn't they be sent to the refuse stockpile? I noticed there's a category for broken items... is it even used at all?

The only items I've seen to break are clothes, but they usually remain owned by a dwarf when they become XXpig tail sockXX, so nobody else is able to throw it away in the refuse pile, and the owner doesn't seem to ever do it...

I guess the best fool-proof way to screen-out vampires from a migration wave, would be to assign all the wave to a screening room where you put them to do some job on repeat (maybe operate a dry pump?) the ones the give up and go to eat, sleep or drink are safe, the ones that stay are vampires...

I have a current fort made with DF_Phoebus_34_02v03 how can i update it to 34.05v01?
Just coping over the files will do? I've been told that I should not update the save game raws to avoid incompatibility issues, doing this will still apply the new bugfixes/features? like the caravan wagons, fixed archery training, etc...

And will I'll be able to get the new graphics?
If you want to use your old savegames in 0.34.05, download body_rcp_eyelids.txt, update your savegame's raws then copy the file in your savegame's object folder located at "/data/save/regionX/raw/objects/".

I've updated the main post with this information.
Thanks for the reply, it turns out that I won't be able to do it anyways, since my DF version is 34.01... no support for that, the saves won't even read... I just happened to install the 34.02v03 graphics over it and forgot about the actual version...

In other issues: could it be possible to custom edit the text gap or is it hard-coded? I'll explain, one thing that bothers me is how difficult is to read the text of the long item lists, for example:
Code: [Select]
*cave swallow bone scepter*
cat bone scepter
+<-goblin tooth amulet->+
instead of having that, couldn't we make it look like this:
Code: [Select]
  *cave swallow bone  scepter*
   cat          bone  scepter
+<-goblin       tooth amulet ->+

See what I mean? adding a few gaps and spaces so the creatures, materials, items, qualities and decorations line up vertically, they become actually readable...

In software development that's called indentation.
Is this is even possible by modding?

Got my 3rd vampire, checked on legends viewer, the only one that matches (same gender, same deities relations) is one of the dwarves I initially though will never be emigrating to my fort, she was settled in a human town!! I even checked the town and it belongs to a human civ that is and has always been ruled by human kings...

I guess this throws out the window, that they vampires need to be historical figures that belong to a dwarven civ, it seems they can belong to any civ (or at least be settled in any civ's sites)

I'm assuming that when a creature settles in a civ's site it becomes part of that civ, I'm checking the legends for the last settlement entry and so far my 3 vampires:
queen vampire - last settlement in my parent dwarven civ's capital (duh)
clothier vampire - last settlement in another dwarven civ's mountain halls
mechanic vampire - last settlement in a human civ's town

I also got the visit of the human civ's lawgiver, a frogman vampire that had 100 something inventory pages of jewellery... interestingly around half the jewellery was owned by him and the other half wasn't, so I was able to dump-steal, like 50 inventory pages of human, dwarf and elf bone, hair and tooth jewellery...  :D  It took over a season (and I have over 200 dwarves) to steal from him, while he waited for my stationed baroness to grant him an audience...

In legends he apparently struck down the human law giver and took his position.

Even for cats, I've noticed that when placing them on pastures seems to slow down their adopting habits, maybe it's just me....
I'm not saying they don't adopt owners at all, they simply seem less likely to do so when pastured... or maybe they get scared out of the pasture somehow and take that moment to adopt someone?
