DF Gameplay Questions / Re: List of Vampire Facts
« on: March 12, 2012, 06:54:28 pm »

Haven't seen this mentioned yet: Vampires' tiles turn into Ñ and profession has "vampire" added to it when they're feeding?

ALSO: Does anyone know if barrels of blood do anything?! It would be SO NICE if that were a solution to the problem.... so, probably not.... :(

I think that only happens if a dwarf witnesses the feeding, you can check the justice screen for the accusations and find the vampires this way.
Don't know about the ascci version, but in the phoebus version, the name of te vampire in the 'v'iew menu turns dark red when he's feeding; the same as with public vampires like a queen for example. If you check their thoughts while they are feeding you can read a line about their teeth being long.

So I don't know if this has been checked yet, but will vampires feed on other vampires? I recall a situation someone described about a locked away dwarf military squad, so I don't think they will. However, better safe than fun if I turn my entire fort into vamps and watch as they devour each other.
my guess is no, since they seem to only feed on sleeping victims, vampires don't sleep, so no vampires feeding on their own kin, the same with animals.... the only way I can see that happening is if the vampire or animal gets a syndrome that causes unconsciousness, not really sure if someone has tested just that...

if that is the case, then the function differs markedly from what is recorded in the wiki.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Creature_token

Quote
The creature will only show up in "tame" biomes. Such creatures will generally avoid dwarves, although they may chase and/or attack them if they get too close, notably including elephants.

Both changing behavior and biome?
I can confirm this, recently in a 34.01 fort, I got a goblin siege mounted on gigant cave swallows, when my dwarves approached them they would get scared and spread away, I commented out the BENIGN token in my save's raws and they would stay and fight.

Also the NOFEAR token keeps them from fleeing the map prematurely but they still will flee when certain amount of the siege has been killed, the only way I found to keep them from escaping after killing most of the siege was to add the token IMMOBILE, and they would stay put, they still would fight back and even move a little by dodging or charging and tumbling...

What I've been doing is monitoring my 2 vampires, I usually put them to do some workshop work in a centralized place of my fortress (one I'm looking at most of the time), they spend most of their time working, every once in a while they go on a break, and that's when they attack some sleeping dwarf, I simply let them feed a bit, then order the vampire to station, it ends the attack, (you can let them get the victim to faint or even pale), then I simply cancel the order and they return to work as normal...

I noticed that if I stop the attack too early (before the victim even gets to faint) they stop, go back to work, and after a little while take a new "break" to attack again, by letting them feed a little, they keep working for longer before they need a new "break".

I also noticed that sometimes in the 'u'nits screen, it would say that the vampire is doing some other activity and when you check them with the 'v'iew menu, they are indeed on a "break"... in particular I've noticed this with my queen vampire, she may get the "conduct meeting" in the 'u'nits screen but when I check her 'v'iew menu, she's on a "break"...

I had one fort with 1 vampire before it's death.  1 in 112.

The second had 37 vampires.  It... was messy.  37 in 84.

Then one had two vampires, my surgeon and diagnostician, ironically.  2 in 54.

Then the next four forts didn't have a single vampire.  0 in an average of 90.
were all these forts from the same world? did you genned different worlds for them? if so do you recall the parameters?

DF Modding / Re: Dwarf Fortress v0.31.25 - Unofficial Patch
« on: March 11, 2012, 08:45:55 pm »
Writing any binary patches for 0.34.01 would be absolutely pointless, since there'll probably be a new bugfix version in a few days which would either fix said bugs or at least move the code around and make them no longer work.
I understand this... but... I started a fort in 0.34.01 and is going really well, wouldn't like to leave it before it's own FUN! demise... could you please at least give instructions on what to do in order to make the bugfix? I'm willing to give it a try, if I succeed I'll be posting it for the comunity in case anyone else is interested.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Updating game-save from 34.01 to 34.05??
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:18:50 pm »
34.01 to 34.02 and later doesn't work. Toady claims, and he should know, that there was a corrupted-save bug in 34.01 that causes an inevitable crash. Since it's the save that actually causes the problem, switching versions wouldn't help, so he just made the saves incompatible.

You're going to have to start a new fort if you update.
what a bummer!  :'(  can I at least use the world seed to replicate the world?

I do not know of any advanced search option inside or out of the game.  The search function only works on the names and not races.
oh, sorry if I didn't make myself clear, I was talking about an external application: Legends Viewer

You need to backup your save, abandon and then extract the xml and map data from in-game legends mode, then using Legends Viewer, you use that data to check a lot of things with an interactive map and advanced search features, the instructions I gave before were for finding vampires or werebeasts using that application...

I only used Legends Viewer just to make sure.
could you please check in legends viewer, her status?

advanced search, historical figures, active interaction contains deity_curse_vampire, filter by race dwarf

In the list you get she'll be using her english real name, you can id her by her first name (I guess you have gone through this already), in the list there's a column called status, where you see values like "wandering, "scouting" or "settled"...

can you check which one she has? and then check her event log, go to the end of it and check the last entry like "settled in" and see if the site is a mountain halls and if it belongs to your parent civ or to another...

I just did this:
Extracted Phoebus 34.05v01 pre installed pack
copied my save folder over to the new clean install
copied the dfhack forlder into the new clean install

when I run df, I only get the option to create a new world, it doesn't recognize my old save...

I even tried genning a pocket world with the clean install, and then copy my save, no dice... it recognizes the new world but my not my old save...

Just noticed... I'm not running 34.02... I'm running 34.01... got confused since I extracted the phoebus graphics for 34.02 on top of my 34.01 install and replaced the name.... My in-game version says 34.01 and when I tried to run DFHack 34.02 (they skipped support for 34.01) I get an error about the version not being recognized...

Any ideas?

Human Kings result from conquering human settlements and the entire dwarven royal family line being extinguished. I noticed that some kings or queens will look for a way to not die and then profane a temple becoming a vampire. Even non immortality seeking kings or queens will profane a temple and become a vampyr
maybe the number of civilitations in world gen is affecting this? I genned with 20 civs in a pocket world, I usually end up with 4-5 civs of each (human, dwarf, elf, goblin and kobold)...

Do that and the number of settlements affect vampires? I read that after a while people get suspicious and they have to move, if there are not a lot of civs to move to, maybe they stay wandering the wilds?

Checking the legends my wandering vampires have a lot of "got confronted by" before moving to other settlement or "wander"

Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Re: DFHack 0.34.05 r1

Running DF opens a second window. For me it sits right in front of DF. Find it and type in 'help' or 'ls'. Go from there.
oh... it triggers a command window automatically now... there we type the commands... isn't there a way to create "shortcuts": pre-enter the commands and run them like the old .bat files?

edit: upgraded my version, now it's working...

Sorry if this sounds a bit noobish, but how do you get this to work?

I went over the .html readme, I backed up my SDL.dll and my save game, then I copied the contents of dfhack over my df folder, it replaced my SDL.dll, I loaded up DF and I got an error about the versions...

I was running 34.02, so that must be it, I'm downloading 34.05 now...

Anyway the versions sorted out, how do you use the commands? do you have to run a cmd.exe window? if so what do you type? I'm wondering since there is no .exe or .bat file only the .dll, and that isn't executable...

or the commands are now typed in-game? if so how exactly?

The last time I used DFHack was in 31.25, with the lazy pack, that all you had to do was run some .bat files that would open a new cmd window and do the trick...

I have a current fort made with DF_Phoebus_34_02v03 how can i update it to 34.05v01?
Just coping over the files will do? I've been told that I should not update the save game raws to avoid incompatibility issues, doing this will still apply the new bugfixes/features? like the caravan wagons, fixed archery training, etc...

And will I'll be able to get the new graphics?
