I have big goblin sieges with nothing but copper spiked balls in a 3-wide hallway.  Nothing survives past about 7 tiles of that.
I use serrated disks, and then goblinite weapons left around after an ambush/siege  ;)

Yeah, maybe?  I really didn't think that was possible, and its a bit of a letdown if it is true!  Just curious what other people have seen and experienced.  Seems like all games now have a built-in siege limit if this is the case.
I don't personally know, I just like reading the RAWs  :)

In my current fort I was humming along, fighting off the seasonal goblin ambush and periodic snatcher.  Kobolds too from time to time.  Then all the goblins just vanished.  No more ambushes, no more snatcher.  Never saw any sieges on the map.  I noticed the lone goblin on the civ screen is now gone too.

So, I've read recently about how it is possible to kill off all the goblins - but everyone still seemed to get sieges despite this.  Not sure what might have happened, and I appreciate any insight into how I might prevent this from happening again.

Maybe you hunted them to extinction? You can do it with animals, but I'm not sure about civs. Maybe they threw all of their people at you, and now they're all dead?

Come to mention it, there was an immediate collapse upon embark. The screen centered somewhere underground. What does this mean, and how does it affect me?
Probably a magma pipe. They delete some squares around them sometimes via "Cave-in", when really it's just deleting. Nothing bad.


Or it might be Hell opening up... but that's unlikely.

Sweet, no new mandates. My duke likes gold, which is easy enough to get, and the current mayor has a fixation on floor hatches.

So, after a long while of searching for THE embark location... you know, the usual... No aquifier, trees, river, flux, and magnetite in it... I finally found one map, and cheered! Although the FPS dropped to about 34, immediately, at embark. It should be at least 100-200... Anyway, this is NOT a question about FPS, but I looked up and I found that I have too much sky in my map. How much? I gave up counting after rising to Z level of 700. And I have read somewhere on this forum recently that sky can eat up resources easily, and much too easily for how little use it normally has.

Info? Advice? I wont ask anything too specific, just in case that someone has something useful to say, that was NOT in my questions... Well, aside from the most obvious one, how do I reduce amount of sky in a map?
I'm wondering how to find out how much there is in a map.

lets see,  plump helmets, booze, barrels, seeds, turtles, one cat 4 dogs, 2 goats,  cheap meat, an anvil, wood,  lots of Tetrahedrite and Casserite..... wait that's what I already embark with.
I'm embarking with 2 cave crocs and a turkey hen.

"Honey, what are we having for dinner tonight?"
"Cave Crocodile eggs."
"AGAIN? Why can't we ever have cat! Other fortresses eat cats!"

In all seriousness, I thought Toady fixed glass edges. Or are they still super sharp, but sucky for other stuff?
I think you should use a looted large copper dagger or something to attack the elf. Since copper is a really poor material, and daggers are really poor weapons, that should keep your elf from getting hit too deep (mostly tearing the skin, tearing the muscle/bruising the bone at worst). To keep your dwarves from cutting off limbs and killing (barring lucky shots), make a different dwarf play "Cut-the-Elf" each time.
Idea! Make it into a party game with prizes for whoever can bleed the elf the most.

I made it so the dwarves can bring anything (like elves, but more GCS's ;D), and at the embark screen I can bring anything I want. Even Giant Cave Spiders!

So Bay12, what would you want to do with this luxury?

I have a lot of silver... and i mean a LOT.
I don't want to waste my precious iron on trap components, and am wondering if making spiked balls out of silver would be effective, or should i just make loads of silver war hammers and fill weapon traps with them instead?

Suggestions?
It's a really dull point x3.

If it's armored it'll be blunt, most likely.

If it's not, it'll be a little sharp.

I'll give it try, but I'm worried their limbs will off from necrosis. But that's alright,  you can't keep everyone alive for profit forever. :D
You could take necrosis off too. That'd work.
