Life Advice / Re: Rootkit on Ubuntu
« on: December 23, 2011, 09:25:48 pm »
the command for that one is rkhunter

(I've never used any of these programs, mind you. I'm just translating from here: http://www.noticiasubuntu.com/como-buscar-rootkits-en-ubuntu/ )

Thanks! That actually worked, so...Let's see if it does anything D:

I just installed Rootkit Hunter, but I can't find out how to run it. I had installed it from the Software center. I tried sudo chkrootkit -c, but it just says that the command isn't found...

Anybody know why? Thanks!

I think I had looked it up, but the last update was late 2009, so...Unless I misse something, it probably won't help...Thanks, though!

I'm also a Linux newbie, so I don't know much. I also can't get the Terminal to work, it says that I'm not an Administrator, and then asks if I'm root, but I can't activate any commands.
Preface your terminal commands with Sudo to run them as an administrator.

I'd boot from the installation CD and then try to run whatever scanners you can find. I expect it would prevent the rootkit from disabling them. (This is almost as obvious as "Is it plugged in?" and I hate to say anything, but for the sake of completion, make sure you downloaded the Linux version of Avast! [I make no claims that these installation instructions work. This was the first page I found with a quick search.])

Actually, I'd probably format and reinstall in a paranoid frenzy.

No worries, I had gotten the Linux avast. I'm a newbie, but not that bad lol. I lost my installation CD ages ago, and the chances of finding it are...Slim at best.

The major problem is, I can't find any scanners. I tried ClamTK, but it found nothing...Ugh. So worried...

Thanks for the post, Nirur!

Life Advice / Rootkit on Ubuntu

Hey, Bay12'ers. I come to you with an urgent plea for help. If you don't know anything about Linux, specifically Ubuntu, please don't bother. I do appreciate any, an all help, but your time would just be wasted.

I'll keep it short and simple. I downloaded a small (3mb) exe a while back, it was for something called OmegleSpy (A friend recommended it to me, I can't get in-contact with him now.) After that, I started getting banned on websites and forums for spamming "Quickprize.net", and I just figure out that I have a root-kit. I tried to use Avast, and I managed to install it, but after (attempting) to update it, I get this error:

Deleted stale lock file '/home/(me)/.avast/lockfile-(me).'
An error occurred in the Avast! engine: Invalid argument

I can't launch Avast! now. Please help me! Are there any good Rootkit scanners, and preferably removers out there? Anything that I can do to fix this? Thank you! I'll be eternally in your debt.

I'm also a Linux newbie, so I don't know much. I also can't get the Terminal to work, it says that I'm not an Administrator, and then asks if I'm root, but I can't activate any commands. Please recommend any decent programs to clean my computer!

One final time, - Thank you!!

Name: Derm: (Note: You're on the road, so I'll take your roll as "Head down the road". You don't really know what possesses you to do something so rash, but you start running down the road, towards the town. Not even you know what drives your mind...The thought of saving innocents? Looting their corpses? Slaying the dragon?...We'll see when we get there...[6] And, incredibly, you make it there extremely soon. Something is niggling in the back of your mind again, and it's...[5] Oh, right. This is extremely strange...You had entered what seemed to be a room, but you figured that it had just looked like it was outside. But, either this room is huge, or...Look! You spy the town up ahead. It's easy to spot due to the flames, but...You don't hear anything. No clash of battle, no screams of mortal wounds...

You reach the open town gate, and peer inside. From your view you can see the corpses of several dozen citizens, a few of them clad in mail. Almost everything is burnt horribly, with only scraps of flesh and clothing hanging on the black, skeletal frames. The smell is nauseous, and your stomach...[3] Holds out. Not very well, but it does, for now anyways. You pick your way through the massacre, trying to be...[5] as stealthy as possible. There's three buildings still (Mostly) standing, and they seem to be...[3] What looks like an inn, something else, and...Possibly a house? Should you investigate any of them, or...?

Name: Nassir: Does smart things! Looking dubiously at your already torn and wretched rags, you...[6] Manage to find a very large, thick piece of cloth hanging from it somewhere. Huh, you had never noticed that before...You wave the rag over the small slit in the middle of the room, and what happens then...[3] A small bit of green gas starts rising from the hole, and at a rapid pace. Thinking quickly, you...[5] stopper the hole with the rag. It seems to work, but you don't know for how long...Just a few whiffs of those fumes makes you feel dizzy. Best not to delay for long.

You ignore the fiendish churning of your idiotic stomach, and continue towards the statue. On a closer inspection, it seems to be about three and a half feet high. The face is warped and twisted, but it looks like some kind of hellspawn. Not something you'd want to tangle with...Good thing that this isn't one of those statues that suddenly reach out and choke you! Or so your mind tells you...[2] SUNUVABITCH, THAT STATUE JUST MOVED. Wait. Did it? You...you can't really tell, but maybe your intuition can...[5] Yes, it definitely moved. Which is probably a very, very bad sign. Between that and the smoke that was rising before (Before you stoppered it), which probably spells out very bad things. Then again, maybe some force is just trying to rive you out of the room...?

Name: Arc: Strange things that shan't be spoken of You steady your mind, and decide that today, you're going to push yourself to the utter limits. In a contest of wills, you and your mind fight against your aching, tired body in the attempt to manage THREE actions. The result is...[6] Beautiful. Absolutely incredible. Your body feels a rush of warm air, and the ache from your muscles just melts away. You're ready to get to work!

Your first task, is to find a way out of the room. This shouldn't be hard...You pull out your Iron sword an start hacking the greenery...[4] Nothing horrible happens. And as such, you...[4] Manage to find the door! But, it wasn't easy, and all that plant-murdering has tired you. Ah, well...You know where the door is now. (Just follow your "Trail".)

Secondly, you...Think about the quality of the fairy. Er, you feel like there's some great, god-like force that's confused, and irritated, at what you're attempting to do. Nevermind though, because you're Arc, the...[1] Fattest, laziest no-good peasant to ever walk the shoreline of the Lake of Stupidity. These depressing thoughts make you feel unhappy...Nevertheless, you think of the "Quality" of the fairy. Despite her tiny size, she was very beautiful. Her body was tight, smooth and most likely soft, and her skin a creamy white. She had long blonde hair, gently flowing down her back. Her eyes were a forest green, deep and tantalizing. The dress she wore was cute and tantalizing, draping over her...Wait! What are you thinking about? You shake these morbid thoughts from your head, and continue on your way...

Deciding that it would be probably a good idea to get some proper clothing on you, you begin to fashion some clothes out of...Uh, leaves and vines. You manage to make...[5] Some pretty good clothes, actually. You grabbed those vines you had seen before, and despite the fact that they smelled noxiously sweet, you used them to wrap the large leaves around your body. It doesn't really provide any sort of protection (At least from monsters), but it's surprisingly comfy, - The undersides of the leaves seem to be soft and fuzzy. What should you do now?

The Terranator (Or whatever I called it) will...I don't know. I'm bad with Sci-Fi, uh...Give it some kind of a strong laser, and a close-range fast "Nail-pounder" machine gun (As in, it slams large, armor-piercing slugs into the enemies frame at a ridiculously fast rate

Name: Arc: Check plants, and pluck shrooms. Following the old advice of your long-dead grandfather, you head towards the first of the interesting plants (The vine), and...[4] Cautiously examine it. The plant seems to be what you'd normally expect from, well, a vine, but the sap is something interesting...It has a bronzed, golden gleam, similar to rich honey. The vine is also a mottled green, and you lightly push it. The soft, spongy texture springs back out when you remove your finger...Nothing else to note, it seems. You'd have to examine the sap more closely...A la, ingesting it. On a flash of brilliance, you take a deep whiff of the vine, not that it really did anything...It smells, well, plant-e. You're a bit disappointed...

Next, you turn towards the mushroom. It's a bit of a ways off, so while heading there...[5] You grab what seems to be a pear, hanging from a branch. You stick it in your (magical) pocket, and close the distance between the Mushroom and yourself. Now that you're closer, the Mushroom doesn't actually sparkle, it literally emanates a small halo of light. It's a rich brown, with a white stem. About three inches tall, with the top being about two inches in diameter. You gently reach down, and pluck it from the soil. It continues to glow, even though it was picked, so that's a good sign...You walk back to where the Faery is, still sitting on her little stool. When she sees the mushroom you're carrying, her eyes seem to light up, and her wings start flitting. The best way to handle this situation would be...[1] To eat the mushroom. In-front of the faery. While laughing. You quickly gnaw down own the 'shroom, not even thinking about your action. When you're finished, your body feels...Good. You can't explain it, but you have a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling deep inside your chest. The Faery looks shocked, and a bit scared. She quickly flits off into the trees, disappearing. You just stand there, with a silly look on your face, patting your stomach appreciably. At least you're full now...The Faery seems to have left the room, if that somehow makes sense. You lie down on the soft ground, and plan your next move...

Name: Derm: Serious Business You decide that having the whole "Cowering Peasant" attitude won't get you anywhere, so you...[1] Stay a cowering peasant. You decide to try and grill him for details...

"A..Ah! Yes, you there, strange soldier who...ran out of these dark, scary woods. I-I demand answers from you! First of all, did you actually mean a Dragon is attacking your v-v-village?"
"Heh? What? Yes, of course there is one! I ran for my life, it's a slaughter out there! The beast attacked early this night, just...Popped up out of nowhere and started eating people! My squadron of fifteen or so Guardsmen fought the beast off, but it was only temporarily, and we lost half of our numbers. It returned, and...And I decided to run. I don't want to die, not yet!"

You do your best to tell if he's lying, and...[Intuition Roll: 2]. Can't tell much from his demeanour. His fear looks real enough, and you notice that he has smatterings of blood on his armour, but there's no way to tell if it's from man, or beast...

"How do I know that you're not lying to me?...And, s-so you left? Left them all to die?"
"What do you expect me to do? I'm an old man, I can't kill a bloody dragon! It's a gigantic winged serpent with teeth as long as daggers, and breaths out flesh-melting flames! Of course I ran, ye fool. Now, get out of my way. I'm leaving!
W...Wait! Where's the village that's being attacked?
"Follow the road! It'll lead you there!"

You suddenly realise that there's a road under you. How did that get there?...[3] Maybe you just didn't notice it. True to his word, the man's already running in the opposite direction, moving surprisingly fast for an old man with armour on. No problem, you know where the village is...One thing is niggling in the back of your brain, and...[2] You just can't bring what it is to mind. No matter...What should you do now?

Name: Nassir: Imitate the tapping! With a sudden stroke of genius intellect, you place your non-door-handle-holding hand against the wall, and...[6] Imitate the thing's tapping. With perfect skill, you manage to replicate almost the exact sound and tempo of the tapping you heard. This exchange goes on for about half a minute, and just when your fingers started to get sore, the other tapping stopped. You hear the sound of something sliding away, and a large CLICK.

Suddenly, without warning, a bright light appears! You don't know what to make of the room you're in. Once the spots clear from your vision, you carefully look around...[3] You notice a large number of slits in the floor, between you and the other door in the room. You check in the direction of where the tapping was coming from, but see nothing other than a large statue of some creature. You don't know what you should do...
