"Devastating" is a strong word.

Weeelll... "Taking 10 years off your life" has an entirely different meaning when you're 25 (pfft, whatever) versus when you're pushing 50 (I need more time!)

Lul. I would say that sitting long hours in front of a computer is already devestating to your health. Strike one. Messing with illegal drugs is also devestating to your health. Strike two. You have one strike left. All you need now is to add alot of junk food and soda, and you're already dead.

Life is shorter than you think! Making it shorter is not in your interest. I can't believe the Ramones are all dead already. Pisses me off.

You can also use retractable bridges for cart sorting so you could have loaded carts making circuits until you need them and then extend a bridge to change course.

FB are HUGE. Minecarts are not going to do jack shit about them.

One of the devlogs says that the damage will occur according to the mass of the cart and its contents and also speed. We don't actually know how much mass a cart can be loaded down with. There may not even be a limit. Image a cart sized thing with the mass of a mountain hitting something at 120 mph!

Are minecarts capable of derailing?

I have a more specific question:

Will a one tile wide tunnel prevent a cart from derailing?

How much stone can go in one cart? It's currently possible to put a whole mountain of stone into a single tile. Will it be possible to load a cart with so much material that it obliterates everything it touches even while moving slowly?

I like the ascii. My only requirement is that it is square. Non-square drives me nuts! I use a very nice one made a long time ago by a user named klokjammer on the wiki (the clean version), and I modified it slighty so that smooth floors contrast better with walls.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stuck Miserable Dwarf
« on: April 12, 2012, 08:17:12 am »
There are a million reasons now why a dwarf might be stuck. Did you put him in some workshop burrow so that he can't reach his bed?

295
Surely this is impossible?
Dwarf Fortress will only use I think 2GB of RAM by default, 4GB with the large address aware patch, there is no way a max size world could run 10,000 years and not hit that.

Things are greatly simplified when the civilizations die out. Start a world with max of every kind of beast and cave and few civs, and world gen will move at a rapid pace and probably won't use alot of memory. I personally like to have civs left though...

DF General Discussion / Re: DF callout at XCOM panel at PAX East

6 per squad is a huge gamble in my mind. That's a huge deviation from the XCOM formula that touches many aspects of the game. Only one base is also a huge gamble. This might be a good game, but it already isn't XCOM.

Downloaded latest version.
Downloaded latest .xml
tried:
File | Import world_gen file (from 34.07)
Error:
Can't read world_gen.txt file, file might be corrupt or missing.

Tried using a saved world_gen from a world I gen'd with 34.07, and am currently playing. same error.

What is this program expecting to be in world_gen.txt?

Yeah, it might be misleading, but PWDF doesn't actually work with the world_gen files from already genned worlds. I think you need to put a [WORLDGEN] tag in front of the info. Theres a missing expected tag in those.

Toady, will corpses be loadable into Minecarts?

(push) 57 goblin corpses into the magma chute... nice. I suppose you don't really need minecarts for that though, you could just dig a deep hole outside somewhere.

When a cart flys off an edge and hits another set of tracks, can it keep going? Can Dwarves ride in minecarts?

There is a way to do this with PWDF but its a bit complicated. Someone earlier in the thread pointed out that you can import custom maps into the elevation map, export the world gen info into a scratch file, and use a search/replace on the name of the tag to change an elevation map into a temperature map.

In my experiments with it, I am unable to determine the exact gradient to counteract without visible temperature banding. Also, the temperature change from altitude is hard coded in DF.
