DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Possible to open a 'clean' magma channel?
« on: June 25, 2010, 09:24:06 pm »
The new way of digging a channel has it's pros and cons. I would like to open a 4 tile wide channel into the top of a magma pipe, but I don't want to leave permanent ramps if I can help it. I think that would look bad. Can anyone think of a reasonable way to do that?

Ok, I just thought of something. I could get 4 sacrifice zero skill miners, make a separate one tile burrow for each guy in front of his wall, and designate for digging hoping they will all finish at the same time. It's possible they might even live if I can unrestrict the burrow in time!

I still would prefer something less... tyrannical.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Battleaxes one or two handed?
« on: June 24, 2010, 09:29:10 am »
My militia commander has two battleaxes in his right hand, and a training axe and a shield in the other hand. I do not know how this is going to work when things come to blows. He is also wearing four iron chainmail shirts. Basically, as I make more equipment, he wears it all and his squadmates get nothing.

He's smart guy. He can throw axes into enemies... and no goblin strike can penetrate 4 chainmail shirts, thus making your commander nealy invincible   8)

Try to delete the squad and reassign your commander.

Ok I finally had my first goblin ambush and.. it was a disaster. I really should know better as an experienced player. Back in 40d I could defend against the ambushes with 6 marksdwarves, which I suppose would seem rediculous if I wasn't so accustomed to it. With marksdwarves broken and using axedwarves instead, you really need alot more. And traps.

The extra suits of mail didn't seem to prolong the life of my commander, he died before some of his unarmored squad mates. also no goblin was injured except by drowning... and since the goblins weren't the only ones drowning, I also learned that stagnant pools are not the place you want to stage a battle.

Time to rethink.

Hahaha. It will end in tears... and... anger and.... rage!

Water and dwarves do not mix well. I once made a river with ramp sides, and the result was that dwarves would try to path through it. If the water level fluctuated enough to cause swimming, mothers would drop their babies in the water. About half of the babies drowned, but the ones that didn't just collected in the water until they reached childhood and could walk out. At that point they were already expert swimmers.

Hello,

figured out my problem with the PW..
tested PW on vanilla DF and works ok.

This result, means the problem is somewhere with Deon's mod.

What I did I took Deon's mod and broke up both race Raw (creature_genesis and entity_default) files into
individual files, naming them like this, civ_dwarf, civ_elf, civ_sylvan (...etc) and entity_elf, entity_sylvan... etc.
I only preserved entity_default for dwarf only
(and in the genesis forum, You will note that I did not like some of the races in Deon's mod, no insult intended to him).

Turns out that PW and Modded don't work together that way.  :o

So did raw file swapping and regenning... turns out the culprit is only the creature_genesis.txt breakup.
with creature_genesis restored and now working fine.

Would like to breakup the creature_genesis.txt, wonder if raw has specific file naming system?   :D

R

All PW does is write numbers into the various map location values. It should work for any DF mod.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military equipment workaround
« on: June 23, 2010, 05:21:06 pm »
Ok, baruk posted this workaround for some equipment bugs, but I don't understand it. Can someone explain the following in more detail?

Quote
I may have found a simpler workaround that actually deletes the duplicated pieces of equipment - no need to reform the entire military. If you check (m)military - (e)equip - (P)Pri/Assignments you see every individual piece of equipment assigned to each squad position - here you can actually see the multiples of equipment that have been assigned. Unfortunately you can't delete them from this screen. You have to specifically assign the duplicated equipment on the (e) equip screen, before deleting it. This will remove the assignment from the Pri/Assignments page, and the duplicate should get dropped.
 In summary, my new workaround is to:
- identify the duplicate equipment on the Pri/Assignments page (via the military/equip menu).
- On the equip menu, assign the duplicated item to the dwarf "specifically", by finding the correct item in the list.
- Delete the assignment you just made. The duplicate should now disappear from the dwarf's equipment complement on the Pri/Assignments page, and the dwarf should drop the item.

How do you assign the duplicated item "specifically"? What list?

DF General Discussion / Re: PlungedPlanks - Aquifers abound.

Wait to see if it freezes, and if that doesn't work, pumps can pump water extremely fast. You can create a dry spot with pumps in which you can build walls to hold back the water.

If you would, go ahead and release a basic version as early as possible. Don't even worry about different stone types initially, just get the shape. We have no 3d visualizer! I just embarked on a large extremely epic site, and I would so have liked to see a basic overview so I can maximize it's potential. Stonesense isn't so useful for getting a site overview. Now I'll have to mess it up by working blind!

DF General Discussion / Re: DF got kinda boring recently.
« on: June 23, 2010, 08:35:37 am »
The fact that you actually expect a single game to keep you entertained forever means that you actually believed it would at one time. Only the best games can get you thinking that way.

730
K, now I have guys holding a shield and also dual weilding battle axes in the main hand. That works? ok.

731
The answer was really a little too obvious. This really isn't anything close to a dilemma.

732
I have 6 dwarves in my new military, and I have enough iron mail shirts for everyone. Except that my commander is wearing them all.

Anyone know a workaround for this?

I wonder if it would be possible to replenish the pool with circular pumps. It's been a long time, but I think that in some previous version that pumps actually created the liquid they were pumping, and the output didn't exactly match the input. You might try something like this...

Code: [Select]
(pool)
~~~~~~%%<--~ back in
~~~~~~||   ~
~~~~~~%%-->~ out from pool
~~~~~~||   ~
~~~~~~%%<--~ back in
Maybe it could be designed better actually, as this example needs to have magma available for the out pump, but you know what I mean.
DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do volcano pipes replenish in DF2010?
« on: June 22, 2010, 04:49:11 pm »
My new site has an awsome volcano, and I'd like to make use of it. However, since so much has changed with the way magma is configured,(you know... down there) I'm reluctant to rely on it refilling should I empty it. Anyone get a chance to observe this?
DF Announcements / Re: Root: A Threetoe Story
« on: June 22, 2010, 02:27:58 pm »
Beautiful story. It really highlights that Dwarves really are very brutish and dangerous creatures by their ignorance and priorites.
Did I miss something? The only reference to dwarves in the story, that I remember, is that some dwarves crafted a particular sword mentioned.
I mean Dwarves from the wider context of what we know... Sorry to get all mystical on everyone.
Ok, what I mean is, the Elf in the story gathered up the squirrel and set out to avenge the squirrels master. A Dwarf on the other hand, would likely gather up the squirrel, tie the squirrel up on the periphery, and by his final death squeals be alerted of any goblin ambushes...
Eh, maybe that was a gopher. Same difference.
