DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No King
« on: May 31, 2011, 08:32:12 am »
Ah. Still, if my civ had no king, it seems off that the game should announce it. Then again, DF is not yet a finished game :)

Accoring to my civ screen, I never had any significant leaders, only elves and goblins do.

DF Gameplay Questions / No King
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:00:43 am »
I jsut managed to becoem the capital. But when I got the "The King has arrived" mwssage, I find no king.

I do not see any changes at all in the noble menu.

I did get 4 legendary weapon users, and a lot of other dwarves.

Am I missing something, or is it a bug?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dealing with lag
« on: May 27, 2011, 05:47:41 am »
My last two forts I have more or less abandoned due to lag. I am note sure what really makes the lag roll in, but I have tried making wide corridors (3 in width) and a large 3x3 central staricase in my forts accessing things straight from them. 4x4 embark.

I even used DF Hack clean once in a while to remove old and uneeded blood stain on the battlefields and such. But non the less, my fort does get laggy.

I even try not to have running water, or pumps at all due to lag. As well as killing off spare kittens and dogs.

Is there any good tips on fortress design for anti-lag? My processor is faitly new and should be OK. Should I try and limit my dwarf count severly?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Axe vs Hammer vs?

I usually do a mix. If a Dwarf has some skills with one weapon form the go, I give him that.

I have also had success with maces. I made some steel maces (before I found silver) and my low skill dwarves knocked in a lot of heads on a hydra with it. I did not get hurt at all by the hyra actually, the maces kept knocking it down. I am usually happy with warhammers, but maces looks to be not so bad against bigger unarmored targets either.

Mainly, my forces do use axes though, with some warhammers here and there. I try to make one spear squad also. But unless I actually get steel, I seldom bother wit hedge or piercing weapon, and make just blut. Adamantine chages everything tho. Adamanite axes chop things up real nice.

As for swords, they are OK actually, but not dwarvens enough for me unless the dwarf has the skill :)

Melt the strands asap into wafers. THen you only get the odd adamantine armor stand, or one lucky adamantine sword I got.

I don't usually build cloths industry, so my strands stay in the workshops. And I got dedicated workshops for strand extraction in my forges.

my coffers in my hospital is usually full with regular thread also. Not haven any admantine sewen into a dorf yet.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Berserk Dwarf Extermination Help

What is the best way to deal with a Berserk Dwarf?

Military usually.

I had a fully clad and armored in steel + steel battel axe soldier go berserk. I had to order teh rest of the military to kill him right away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military Training is too slow?
« on: May 18, 2011, 11:19:33 am »
Indeed, my militia commander killed off two ambushes by himself while he was out gathering plants for some reason. I had him set to active duty training... so I made a move commabd and he then lept right into the gobbos with his steel battle axe and armor, shredding them to pieces and making the last few gobbos run away. Then he was back gatheirng plants (no idea what made my schedule so messed up).

he did have some prior skills, but not a whole lot, he had just been training for about a year.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Barracks design
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:18:03 pm »
I told my squads to sleep there. In my first fort I had the whole room engraved, and they seem happy enough.

In my last for I had them designated to sleep in a un-smoothed room. They are not really as happy anymore, and one of them even went berserk and had to be put down (a steel axe wielding crazy is dangerous).

I am smoothing and then engraving the room now to see if it helps.

I don't mess with the ''minimum training'' thing, because even with it on 10, if I have a squad of 4, those four will train. I don't see a point in the option to change it being there if they train regardless. I build the room, pick either the rack or stand, highlight the squad and Q and T so they train and everything. Then they all show up and begin to do their thing, even if there is less than 10. This is after I open up the squads with S and set then with T to Active/Training instead of inactive. The only time they arne't in their room doing soldier-y things is when they're eating, sleeping, or off on a suicide mission of mine.

I always leave the minimum at least one lower than the size of the squad. Whenever I used to leave it alone, one dwarf would always run off to eat/sleep/drink, leaving the others with nothing to do but wait for him to get back. This is especially bad because I always dig my main fort pretty deep in, and build my barracks right behind the entrance.

This is what I thought as well. Tho, even so in my squad of now 10, only 3 or 4 seem to hang out in the barrack at al ltimes despite them being set on active training duty :/ I had minimum 5 så I would be sure tha tthe ones there would always do something :P

Even tho it is a bit off topic here and there, I have still gotten quite a bit of useful info from this thread ;)

I tried a new barracks now, just one big room in my new fort. So far I am having problem getting my only squad actually train there. I set them for 4/8 to train at a minimum, each month, but it is usually only 2-3 of the squad there only. But when I command the squad to do something, 7 usually show up. (Despite being failry skilled, they came with skills in the range of 2-4, so they are not total noobs, and manged to kill a hydra without injury, but a goblin hammerman mange to hurt their bons pretty bad, despite all steel armor).

I have not used danger rooms either. They kind seem a bit too easy and broken-ish. Now that I have a decent grasp on military and traps, I find regualr training seem enough for goblins, and the odd beast. I have yet to face a real super beast tho... :)

Yeah, rocks seem to be in abundance. Sometime I try to make marble crafts (assuming I have plenty of it) so that I get that nice 2x modifier on worth.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Advised Population cap limit.
« on: May 16, 2011, 06:15:04 pm »
I got a 300 pop cap, but never gotten that many yet. My first fort was a 5x5 embark, and I made only small (2 width) corridors. Next fort I used a 4x4 embark and a minimum of 3 witdh main corridors. FPS on my last fort is better.

Building walls and having traps in thoose corridos helped a lot.

While my cages earlier was OK, the new spinning serrated glass discs I have (5 in each trap) wors wonders. Last siege was dissipated beofre I hardly had begun.

My dwarves fianlly begun sparring as well, and is now on their way to becomming decent weapon users, although the armor skill is still lower. I might even send my clownite clad and armed spear dwarves against a forgotten beast I have walled in a cavern now.

But still windeirng, 2 vs 3 mail shirts? Is tehre a very big difference? Consdiering I have limited metal, and I have now gotten up to 185 dwarves I want t ostart a new squad, but with limited metal and all... :D
