Just wanted to say, thanks for bringing this companion to my attention. I may need to reinstall Oblivion one of these days and give it a whirl.

A fairly low cost way of making money in the early game is to keep a sharp eye open for exploration contracts and nab any that involve locating places or objects of interest (survey probes, space stations, stuff like that). A couple of combat freighters combined with a small tanker can easily fly from the core worlds to the edge of the sector and back again on a single tank of fuel, and after you get paid you can try to loot whatever you were sent to find (not to mention anything else you happen to find along the way) for valuable cargo. If you have the supplies and manpower to spare, you can also accept planetary survey jobs which might help you locate potential places to set up colonies later. Those might require larger crew sizes and therefore larger expenses, so be careful with those.

Just keep an eye on your feed when traveling through civilized space and be prepared to snap up any job (or jobs, if the stars align) that you feel confident of doing. They won't be on offer forever, and if someone else accepts the job first you won't get paid.

I started up Endless Sky late last week, and suddenly I have like 40 hours on it. I started off with an itty bitty shuttle and nearly half a million in debt. Now I'm piloting a luxury liner converted into a troop transport, with more than a dozen warships and freighters escorting, and more than 40 million cash in the bank.

Aside from a couple of rough spots, it is safe to say that I am thoroughly enjoying the game so far.

Oh, I think I know exactly what game you might be talking about. It was an edutainment game, right? You solved various math problems to proceed? Your only weapon was an ink shooter that temporarily stunned fish?

If so, it was called Operation Neptune.

If it were a company other than Activision/Blizzard, I might be upset. As it stands, those companies were cesspools and I wish Microsoft good luck in dealing with the mess.

There is a sort of in-game way to check what materials do: show them to the Guide. Let him hold any item with the material tag and he will show you a list of everything that can be crafted from that item, the other materials needed for that item, and he will even tell you which crafting furniture to use.

It's not perfect. He won't tell you how to acquire those other materials, and if the resulting item is also a material he won't tell you what can be done with that (not until it is in his hands, anyway). But short of tabbing over to a browser with the wiki open it's the best source of crafting information in the game.
