Life Advice / Converting screencaptures to GIFs
« on: April 04, 2012, 02:12:18 am »
To put it simply, I'm looking for a program that will record a window or desktop, similar to streaming software, that I can then convert into an animated GIF. I tried one such program, and it seemed to work at first, but the final product only had maybe 3 frames out of 20 saved, and was a blank white rectangle.

Free or shareware is preferable, but I might be willing to cough up money if the price isn't ludicrous.

Play With Your Buddies / Question Re: Let's Plays
« on: March 25, 2012, 10:23:38 pm »
I would like to continue an old LP of mine that I was forced to abandon due to school problems. Well, I love the game that was being played and I've got a reasonable amount of free time nowadays to continue. I was wondering what the proper procedure was:
 • Necro the old thread, continuing from where I left off.
 • Start a new thread, linking back to the old one and continuing.
 • Start a new thread, restarting the game.
Or some other option?

Other Games / Suggest a game for me!
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:11:36 pm »
Alright, I have a $40 Best Buy giftcard. I'm looking to spend it on a PC game or two. The problem is that my laptop's specs are fairly poor, so new stuff like Amnesia or Skyrim are right out.

Windows 7
Intel Dual-Core 2.4Ghz processor
4GB RAM
Intel Integrated HD-3000 video card

So what does Bay12 suggest? I'm currently looking for a decent roleplaying game, but I enjoy most genres.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Weird Bug
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:11:53 pm »
So I had a fairly young fortress, had just hit it's first year. The caverns had been breached, an artifact iron war hammer had been created (had a particularly badass name), and a crundle invasion had just been fended off with no casualties. I began designating some more stairs deeper into the earth for my second-best miner (the best had been slain by a troll), when the bug occurred.

The designations I placed began disappearing at random, and at the same time I was hit by a flood of job-cancellation spam. Not from the miner, but from seemingly random dwarves who were roughly 30 z-levels up. Mostly from the farmers and wood cutters, claiming that there was no path to the outside. I checked, double-checked, and triple-checked, but there was absolutely nothing blocking the path, and indeed other dwarves were able to get outside to work, and human traders that arrived shortly after the bug occurred were able to enter the fortress with no fuss. Announcements were a constant spam of "Urist McWoodcutter cancels cut down tree: no path x17", and attempts to re-designate the new caves to be dug simply resulted in the designations disappearing. In the end, I abandoned.

Is this a known bug? Are there any work-arounds?

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play Space Hulk! -Mission 0 Start-

++Welcome, Lexicanium Calistarius. What is your command?++
Query: Space Hulk

Space Hulk? Dudes in power armor? What is this?
This, boys and girls, is what would happen if those punks from the Alien franchise were 9 feet tall and were walking around in a small tank. Space Hulk is a turn-based tactics board game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It features the definitive Space Marines as they seek to cleanse a massive hulk (a bunch of derelict ships mashed together) of countless genestealers. The action is tense, the combat bloody, and victory is all too often just out of reach. In short, it's a perfect game to complement the X-COM craze sweeping the gaming world.

Nifty. How does this work?
Not gonna lie: Space Hulk is complicated even when you have the 23-page rulebook in front of you. I will be summarizing as best I can, and will be leaving out rules that don't apply to current missions (rules for picking up items, for instance). Still, it will be a lot to read and some prior experience with the game is encouraged.

The current plan is for each forum member to take control of a single Marine per mission, while I handle the genestealers. Cooperation among Marine players is critical, and there will be a strict 24-hour time limit for players to decide on their orders. Do not volunteer if you can only get on once a week or so, because an orderless Marine will not get to do anything, and will probably be dead.

Alright, I'm in! What now?
First, make sure you familiarize yourself with the rules in the next post. I'm gonna be summarizing them as much as possible, but sadly there's no real tl;dr option. Second, post in the thread with the following form:
Code: [Select]
Your name:
Marine Preference:
Your Marine's Name:
Bio (optional):

Finally, welcome to the Blood Angels! Hope you like cleaning genestealer bits out of your armor!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So many rats!
« on: January 19, 2012, 08:52:35 pm »
So I fired up DF for the first time in a year or so yesterday, determined to have some good old-fashioned !!fun!!

I choose a nifty-looking embark site: soil and clay on the surface, flux stone, and both deep and shallow metals. No surface magma, but I'd deal with that later. It's just a little cold.

So I dig out my initial home, get some beds made, start moving stuff inside, the usual, when the snow starts melting. And as it does, I see this near the wagon:

Play With Your Buddies / Gauging Interest: Space Hulk
« on: January 18, 2012, 01:03:29 am »
Space Hulk is a board game released by Games Workshop and set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It features a small squad of Space Marine Terminators as they battle to survive the genestealer onslaught aboard a derelict clump of ships drifting through space. The action is turn-based, and very tense. Terminators have the advantage of ranged weapons and tactics, but the genestealers are nearly limitless in number and have the overwhelming edge in close combat.

Games Workshop has released three editions of the game over the years, and I was lucky enough to be one of the relative few to snag the latest one. Since there aren't very many people in my area interested in tabletop games in general, and WH40k in particular, I figured I'd try my hand at running an online campaign, a chess-by-mail sort of game. I would be GM and genestealer player, while fellow Bay Watchers would each be allowed to control a single Marine, and work together to complete the objectives for each mission.

Right now, I'm merely trying to see how many people would be interested in such a game. Please share what thoughts you have.

General Discussion / I call shennanigans, network card!
« on: December 25, 2011, 09:03:18 pm »
Alright, I recently bought a new laptop which, on paper, looked to be better than my old one in every single way. Shortly thereafter, I discovered just how bad Intel integrated chips are, but that's not the purpose of this post.

Anyway, like the old laptop this one is connected wirelessly to the home network. The router is nothing special, but I discovered that this laptop gets some insanely slow download speeds, at best getting 120 kBps and more frequently closer to the 20-30 range, and downloads will sometimes fail. It doesn't seem to be the ISP or router, as identical downloads on the old laptop get better speeds and never fail. It also seems to use an inordinate amount of processor power, as watching a video or playing a game during a download causes stuttering sound and freezing the image.

But as I type this, Bittorrent is blazing away at a merry 400kBps upload speed, when the same file (a perfectly legal one, thank you!) downloaded at the previously stated best speed. What the hell? Should I have the network card inspected, in case it's faulty?

Other Games / Geneforge?
« on: November 22, 2011, 06:25:39 pm »
Was browsing the Steam store just now, and something called the Geneforge Saga caught my eye.

Quote from: Steam Page
Geneforge is an Indie fantasy role-playing game, the first game in the five-part Geneforge Saga. It features an enormous world, the ability to create your own army of lethal, totally obedient creatures, and a cunning enemy AI with foes who can go on patrols, stalk you, and run for help.

Geneforge has a huge and open storyline. You have the freedom to choose your own path and decide how the story will turn out. You can fight the evil overlord or you can join him. You can help the peasants or you can torment them. You can be the bold hero or you can just try to get away. No matter what you choose, Geneforge offers an enormous adventure with plenty of replay value.

Anyone know anything about this game? Anyone recommend it? I don't mind primitive graphics, as long as the gameplay is good.

Other Games / What game-based movies would YOU like to see?
« on: November 11, 2011, 08:52:32 pm »
Topic is pretty simple. If you could make a movie based on a game, what would it be? Who would star? What genre? Stuff like that.

One idea I had a few minutes ago was to make a musical based on Elite Beat Agents, where three skilled dancers form a personal cheer squad to encourage people in need of help. It'd be just as zany as the game.

Another idea, one I've been kicking around for a while, is a live-action Warhammer 40,000 movie, specifically about the Ciaphas Cain series. I'm thinking Robert Downy Jr would be an excellent Cain.
Why the Ciaphas Cain series? It would have all the fluff for the devoted fans of the IP, but remain likable and humorous enough for general audiences to enjoy.

Infinite Space is a space-themed RPG created by the suspiciously-named company Nude Maker. That alone might not make it stand out among the endless number of fantasy-themed games. Where it shines, however, is the real-time battles, huge list of characters (almost 100 crew members, not counting the insane number of supporting cast), many dozens of full 3D ship models (surprisingly well-detailed, for the DS), massive amounts of customization, and an epic story that covers two galaxies. It is also one of those rare games that you can tell the ratings board didn't cover very well; heads get blown off, eyes get stabbed, and people get DRUNK (with hi-larious consequences).

While the game was well received in Japan, western audiences got turned off by the sheer scale of the game and the admittedly somewhat cliched storyline, not to mention how difficult the battles can be (random encounters can kill you if you don't figure out the combat system quick). Personally, I enjoyed it very much, and was nearing the end of the game when I somehow lost my cartridge (  :'( ).

This will be a screenshot LP with LOADS of text. Keep in mind that this is a space opera inspired by stories from sci-fi giants like Clarke and Asimov. If you frequently visit the Something Awful LP forum, you'll probably recognize the practice of using cut-out heads to tell the dialogue, rather than full screenshots. This will PROBABLY NOT be a 100% run; in fact, getting 100% in a single game is pretty much impossible thanks to branching dialogue paths and the ability to pick different sides in different conflicts. Some optional crew members are pretty dang hard to recruit as well.

Audience participation is encouraged, mostly when it comes to decision making. If you have a creative streak and want to RP or whatever, that is fine as well - so long as it doesn't get out of hand.
One more thing: unless I spoil it first, this thread has a NO SPOILING policy. I'm guessing that quite a few readers have never even heard of this game, much less played it. Be kind and take any discussions about the ending or whatever to private messages. Hell, I don't even know how it ends.

And now...let's sail the sea of stars!

Other Games / Help me find a game?
« on: September 20, 2011, 10:57:01 pm »
Last week, I saw a friend of mine playing a really interesting game on his iPad. It was sort of like a civilization builder, a lot of emphasis on making sure that your village had enough food and stuff like that. There were other tribes to deal with, and you could sacrifice to various gods to heal your villagers or use magic in battle.

Two things interested me the most:
 • Outside of making the big choices, you had no real control over the outcome of things. You could assign X amount of warriors to attack your neighbors, and give them a certain objective (from stealing cattle to genocide), even assign a commander, but the outcome was determined by the computer.
 • You could take quests, which seemed to be re-enactments of legends. As long as you made the proper choices, your village would receive bonuses.

Now, I don't remember the game's name, but I do remember that it was a port of an older PC game. If anyone could help me out, it would be appreciated.

What game is this?
This, my fellow Bay Watchers, is Galactic Civilizations II (henceforth known as GalCiv), with it's expansion Twilight of the Arnor, developed by Stardock. GalCiv is a 4X sci-fi game, noted for it's flexible custom ship design, ease of modability, and a huge number of random events that can make or break an empire. And I'm gonna be playing it!

I love sci-fi/4X/you! Tell me more!
This is gonna be an audience participation LP. You guys can join one of several councils to help shape the direction of the Terran Federation and lead us to victory. Updates will cover a single year, though important happenings will be posted right away. This will be a screenshot-heavy LP, so those with dial-up may have trouble.

Spoiler: Galaxy Setup (click to show/hide)
The game will be run in the largest possible galaxy, with plenty of planets, stars, and anomalies. All victory options will be enabled, to give us options. The seven AI opponents will be on Normal difficulty, but the exact species we face will be randomized. You may have noticed that I turned off Super Abilities. I find them to be fairly unbalanced, so we'll do without.

Spoiler: Race (click to show/hide)
We will be playing as the humans. We can keep the defaults for leader name and stuff, or you could vote to change them. We'll also need to choose a political party. This cannot be changed once the game starts, so choose wisely. Industrialist Party was chosen.

 • Federalist Party (default). Provides a 20% bonus to the economy.
 • The Industrialists. Adds 20% to both social and military production.
 • Mercantile Party. Adds 20% to both trade income and espionage.
 • The Pacifists. 10% bonus to social production and 20% bonus to influence.
 • The Populists. 10% bonus to population growth and morale.
 • The Technologists. 20% bonus to research, and +1 to sensor range.
 • The Universalists. A bit of a grab bag. 5% economy bonus, 10% defense bonus, 10% population growth bonus, and a whopping 25% luck bonus.
 • The War Party. 10% bonus to weapons and defense, and a +15 bonus to soldiering.
