He was silent for a moment after her question was asked, shifting uncomfortably and adjusting the grip on his spear, as if he believed he might soon come under attack.  Or perhaps he was thinking of some past violence, as his eyes flickered with remembered anger and focused unseeing on something far distant.

It soon vanished, replaced by a thoughtful calm.

"Something like that."

Aika blinked in surprise. The soldier had been much more evasive in his answer than he had before.

: Oh? Maybe he was a bodyguard, or some town watchman. Or who knows! Out loud, she added "Well, I know Captain Liz would prefer if I were a bit more professional. Any tips?"

Aika shrugged, but a wink showed that she wasn't as upset as her words might imply.

: "Don't worry about it, fella. Lucky for you I'm not the kind to hold grudges over little things like that."

: "Anyway, I've noticed you seem to be a bit more professional than most of the others here. Ex-military, maybe?"

: "Glad to hear it, si--I mean, Martyn."

She took advantage of the downtime to brush Faewynd's mane of a few leaves that got caught during her flight.

: "And yes, proud member of Lenon's Pegasus Corps. Captain Liz sent me on ahead of the rest of the platoon, so I'm stuck with Godhand until I receive new orders to the contrary. Not sure when that'll be exactly..."

Aika was waiting on the other side of the walls, and threw a quick salute in Geoffrey's direction.

: "Town's clear, sir. I take it the raiders have been defeated?"

I got Pascal's Pugilistic Piercing Plasma Pistol. It does a lot of Plasma damage (as one might imagine), pierces most non-magical armor, and can even be used in melee with no penalties. Unfortunately it only hold 20 rounds, and you cannot reload the weapon without answering a physics question. Failing to do so summons a hostile Mathematician of a random level to attack you. This can include boss-level and named enemies.

Probably could use a caster or a healer. We've got a lot of melee fighting ability already but we're short on magic of any kind.
