There are also rubber slugs for some shotguns that inflict stun damage. They fire like bullets, so you don't necessarily need to get up and close and personal with foes like with normal shells, and IIRC they're available for purchase on the Black Market much earlier than harpoon rounds. I don't know if harpoon rounds ever become available, come to think of it.

Eventually, Amberly rose somewhat shakily to her feet. She hadn't felt any response to her prayers from the Old Gods, but that wasn't all that unusual; they were usually more concerned with keeping the world running than with the affairs of mortals. There wasn't anything to do at the moment but push forwards and hope that she receive some sort of sign.

No steel, but there is uranium of all things. I don't know if it actually spawns anywhere but it's visible in the in-game handbook (along with some rather advanced bits of technology).
So there most definitely is a foundation. What the devs will do from here is still a bit up in the air.

Any suggestions for early-game housing? I'm a little done with hiding on a dirt tower every night and needing to kill 2-4 gathered drifters (which don't even drop anything!) once the sun comes up. Unfortunately I need all of my wood blocks to make firewood to make charcoal, and cobblestone almost requires metal tools in order to gather sufficient stone.
I dislike drifters. I don't mind the presence of hostile creatures, but they are not fun to deal with and unlike Minecraft mobs you can't just wait them out until morning. If you're unlucky enough to get surrounded by drifters at night you absolutely must clear them out before you can get anything else done.
EDIT: I downloaded the new stable version, wiped the old world because apparently 1.9.1 is such a different beast that even a huge array of server commands can only partially fix a 1.8.x world. First impressions:
Foxes are adorable. I hope they can be tamed at some point.
They made the pre-metal grind even worse by now requiring a whopping 20 copper bits to make a single ingot. Considering that on my previous world I was lucky to find a whopping total of 15...
On the bright side, I found my first ruin, on the surface even. I broke open a loot container labeled (Food) and discovered, not food, but a friggin vinyl record disk. Very cool, but I can't use it. At least I can strip down the ruins for enough cobble to build a proper house for the first time, ever.
EDIT 2: Goddamn wolves. Ambushed me while scouting out a place to build my home. Now my cool stuff is gone somewhere far, far from spawn, and I cannot find the place again.
I don't suppose there's a log somewhere that might mention the coordinates where players have died, is there?
EDIT THE THIRD: Found my old site, but some of my stuff despawned (not the record though!). Barely escaped from roving wolf packs, now trying to find a place to build a base. I wanted to settle on top of this massive plateau I found, but I discovered one very sad new change: You can't swim up waterfalls any more. No more water elevators, I guess.

Personally I don't care enough about the movie (or Sonic) to form an opinion on how likely this is

Yep, reeds and horsetail from the looks of it. Took three worlds before I found any reeds, I wonder how long it'll take me to find horsetail?
Luckily I found some redcurrant bushes, and those heal a tiny amount of HP each. I'm going to harvest some bushes and try to grow my own supply.

Is there a way to heal? I got bit by a hyena in this latest world, but survived by jumping into some water and smacking it with a rock (it ran away). Keeping my food meter full doesn't seem to be doing anything.

So I decided to try playing this.
My world is infested with hyenas. It hasn't even been a day and I've died multiple times. By far the worst instance was when, while walking along the edge of a massive lake/ocean looking for reeds, I got caught between two hyenas that my spear was unable to fend off. I respawned, tried to make my way back there to collect my belongings, and got killed by another hyena before going 20 blocks.
This is (not) going well.
EDIT: I tried to rush back there, sprinting the whole way. The hyenas were guarding my stuff, I fell into a hole while trying to dodge them, and then they caught and ate me again. I'm giving this world up as a bad job.

The basic premise is as follows:
Humans develop AI-driven robots ("dolls") to serve them.
Earth suffers consecutive catastrophes (including but not limited to WWIII), decimating the human population.
The AI for a major arms manufacturer goes haywire, producing killbots that come into conflict with human survivors.
Humanity has the tech to fight back on the main front but lacks sufficient resources to defend every remaining population center from wandering bands of killbots.
Mercenary company (that the player is a newly minted officer in) gives archaic weaponry to civilian-model dolls to try and fix the above problem.
So Frumple basically has the gist of it.

Turn up the juice until cord melts, then record the wattage/voltage/amperage/whateverage. Buy an identical replacement cord.
Easy peasy.

I have her from an earlier event. She's fun, if not especially broken.
