So, what should I do? I can engage the nearby sentinel, might stand a chance at killing him. Or I can move north to try and fight all those northern forces. Or ignore the northern forces in order to smash one of the doors.

My attack power isn't impressive and I could go for the other doorway if you guys'd prefer that.Efa has a longbow, so she doesn't have to stand in the doorway to attack. If you don't want to attack the swordsman, move out of the way and let Fezz do it. You can start blasting the north door, which IIRC doesn't have any RES to diminish your magic attacks.

Decide to start up a simple game so I can see how it works. Me and one AI nation, I decide to play an underwater nation because I can have a Great Kraken pretender and that seems pretty cool. The game generates a small map...
And there are literally two water tiles. My starting location, and one next door. I have amphibious troops, but most of the best-looking ones are water only and one of the commanders is completely immobile. A bit of scouting reveals heavy Independent presence on every adjacent tile. Something like 40 Wolf Tribe warriors one one, a few dozen Barbarians on another, that sort of thing. The AI nation, Nifelheim, is only three tiles away and by turn 4 or so have conquered vast swathes of land. I conquer the sole remaining water tile (deep water, low income and resources but it's the only thing I have a half-decent chance of taking with my starting force) with heavy losses thanks to the Kraken running around slinging spells, then build up a surface expedition which runs straight into a Nifelheim force and gets slaughtered to a fishman. Ragequit time.

More peaceful than not, relatively high standard of living, plenty of scientific and cultural development. Definitely some nastiness, but considering the scale of things he was probably doing better than the US is. General state of things actually got worse after the Empire toppled and better when Palps assembled the whole thing.Many of those were also hallmarks of the Old Republic. Yes, there were plenty of wars in the galaxy's history but there were still long periods of general peace (the damn thing survived 20,000 years, more or less), and the standard of living in most places was much higher than anything on Earth.
Then the Empire came along, and so did state-sanctioned slavery (Wookies were enslaved in vast numbers to help build the first Death Star, for one example) and genocide (the Caamasi (though the Bothans helped) and the Firrerreo, two examples I can name off the top of my head). I don't care how inefficient the Old Republic was, the Empire is not a regime I would like to be a part of.
