I reckon literal hell would be a pretty fun time on the right drugs.
I imagine that you wouldn't get the "right drugs" in literal Hell. Assuming it's a realm of torment and agony, anyway.

My mildly successful start is starting to snowball in my favor. I'm up to ten dudes, most of them not good at much of anything but at least they're warm bodies. Eight of them are working on my new outpost to the east of that early-game Shek town, while two are working in and around the town; one mining copper to sell, one serving as researcher and all-around gofer.

Despite being on the Shek side of Hub, this place is apparently in Holy Nation territory if the frequent prayer groups mean anything. Also I get periodic warnings of raids, but these raiders are way nastier than the normal wandering bandits: Black Dragon ninjas and Bone Warriors. I tend to abandon camp and try to lure them to the city, but it's a long run and I can never get more than a few to follow me all the way back.

Well, whatever. I have walls starting to go up, I have access to every resource (though water is only at 60%), and given time I will get some wheat farms and electricity up and running. Aside from the warned raids, we've also been hit by a couple of squads of Hungry Bandits. For the first time in my Kenshi career, my dudes have stood their ground against bandit groups and actually beaten them. Yeah, we get hurt ourselves, but at the end of the day (some of) my dudes are standing and the bandits are dead or dying. Since Kenshi runs on DBZ rules, we'll only get better at fighting as time goes on!

Arial rolled her non-existent eyes.

(12,5), take a potshot at the non-paralyzed skeleton.

Random question: what's the best way to find new dudes to recruit? Do they wander the map, stopping at settlements for a while before moving on? Do new ones spawn in after a time? Or is each dude unique, and once you screw up their recruitment or they die you're out of luck?

Most of the guides I read say to grab any freebie and 3k dudes you can find in the early game, to build your numbers while saving money for food and supplies. Thing is, I can never find many of either. Most dudes I can find cost 6k or flat out refuse to join me.

Controversial statement:

The true way to prepare coffee or tea is whichever way you most enjoy it.

Arial grinned as a surprised-looking skull flew through the air on the other side of the dune. It was a common misconception, she knew, that skeletons couldn't make any sort of facial expression without skin and muscles and so forth. Skeletal expressions were extremely subtle, true, but they were quite readable to undead and anyone familiar with them.

: "Heheheh! Your eyes are evil enough for us both, Miss Snake. Is that some sort of magic?"

Interesting, I had no idea that option existed.

That won't prevent my designated miner from storing the copper he's mining, will it? Not if he's got the job set up.

Apparently, it's a sort of cross between 5E D&D and FATE (not FATAL, that's something completely different) where supposedly all the dice rolling is done by players. You roll d20s to try and beat various challenge ratings, can get training in various areas to reduce the difficulty of said challenges, and can burn your "HP" to gain further boosts at the cost of leaving yourself vulnerable. The GM sets the difficulty of various tasks; provides narrative; and can intercede in rolls to make players automatically fail, in exchange for giving the players bonus EXP. Notably, players can spend EXP in order to ignore the intercession.

Oh and it apparently takes place on Earth something like a billion years in the future.

I've had an odd issue that I'm unsure is a bug or what.

See, I finally managed to get something resembling a decent start. Recruited a couple of freebie dudes, bought a ruined house in that Shek town south of Hub, patched it up, built a research table and got copper storage, built that. Then I set one of the new dudes to mine the nearest copper node and cart it back to storage.
This is where the weirdness set in. When I tried to get a different character to unload the storage bin so I could sell the ore, it vanished from her inventory before I could get her to the nearest merchant. Examination of the storage bin and subsequent experiments revealed that if I left her idle for even an instant she would simply put the ore in her inventory back into the storage bin. If I moved her away from the bin, she'd turn around and try to run back. I eventually got her to the store but I had to leave the entire transaction on pause to keep her from running back out again.

So what's going on here? She has no jobs related to storage of ore. No jobs at all, in fact. Why are my characters so damn determined to store all copper, even the stuff I just had them remove from storage?

sane people don't wear shoes indoors
Most office and industrial settings frown on bare feet.
I see no contradiction here.
You might see the contradiction when something heavy crushes your unprotected toes.
What kind of shoes do you have that will do anything about that, or am I just underestimating how much force a shoe can prevent
Any shoe is better than no shoe when safety is a factor. That said, steel-toed boots exist and can make a large difference.

I'm curious as to how the game can even handle that many people. My copy chugs just trying to load Hub when I've been hanging out in the next city over for a while.
