Also yeah ours is decidedly more one-sided. We don't retaliate, our opponent just tries to hit us. We used to have a fencer good enough that we gave out prizes if you hit him.

Darth Maul got cut the hell in half and making it canon that he survived bisection via lightsaber and a fall into a bottomless pit is the kind of toy-pushing BS that eclipses even ewoks. But Darth Maul is also rad as hell, so ok. To be clear: This guy died, but this guy is totally fine.

Kessel Run, actual droid revolution, sabacc scenes, basically every character was very enjoyable to me. I enjoyed Han even if he felt like not-Han, because the performance was genuinely enjoyable.

What Sirus said. The Clone Wars cartoon established that Darth Maul survived through sheer force of will, went crazy, had a mechanical-spider lower half for a while, was rescued by Savage Opress (another Zabrak), and taken back to Dathomir where the Nightsisters fixed his broken mind (and restored him with more normal prosthetic legs). He was eventually betrayed by Darth Sidious (or tried to betray him, can't remember which) who killed Opress and took Maul captive.

I think the Rebels cartoon established that he escaped, said "fuck the Sith" and used his talents to become a player in the criminal underworld instead.

Makes sense to me -- Jedi seem more willing to meet their fate, whereas Sith are desperate to live forever.
