Top Secret Log of Marshall XXXXXXXXXXXXX
January 1st, 1999

I regret this posting immediately.

Though suggestions for bases varied wildly, the majority favored Japan. Specifically, Northern Japan, on the island of Hokkaido. At first I was favorably impressed by the strategic advantages of that choice: the island was in easy range of a number of high-population cities, but was relatively lightly populated and the center was quite mountainous, making it easier to keep our presence as secret as possible.

With the location and name set, construction began and was finished in record time.

I was favorably impressed by the resources at our disposal. Two top-of-the-line jet fighters, a VTOL transport, laboratories, a workshop, and plenty of storage and living space. I put in some orders for expansion, and then turned my attention towards interviewing our first recruits...and discovered that they were , for the most part, utterly insane. Some of them used their real names, or a nickname from their time in the armed services...

: "So Mr. Hauser, is it?"
"Call me Foxy."
: "...right. Well, your physical abilities seem well-rounded. You should make an excellent rifleman."
"Thank you, sir."
: "Welcome aboard."

: "'Redshirt'...isn't that some sort of reference?"
"I think so, sir. I never bothered to look it up."
: "Probably for the best."

Others...did not.

: "So why are you here, um, Superfly?"
"I had to get out of the business, man! I can't be a dealer my whole life!"

: "Why...why are you wearing that?"
: "You got problem with Cirno cosplay?"
: "No no, of course not!"

: "You seem well-balanced. Why'd you sign up for a dangerous job like this?"
"NO ONE SAID THERE'D BE DANGER!! OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD"

: "Could you put down that stick of dynamite, please?"
"No."

: "What the christ."
: "HAI MARSHALL-SENPAI I AM SOOOOOO EXCITED TO BE HERE! CALL ME SUPER SPECIAL KAWAII BLUE--"
: "No."
: "WITCH TEMP...what?"
: "Your name is now Mud."

"Awwwwww."

: "Weren't you the homeless guy attacking employees out front with your cane?"
"Aye."
: *sigh* "You're hired, I guess."

And more are due to arrive within a week or so. I need a drink.

January 1st, 1999 - Later that day
We've found something.

There it was, clear as day. An unidentified craft, refusing to respond to any hails.

The thing was flying over the ocean, heading towards land. As soon as it got closer, I dispatched an interceptor to shoot it down.

A single missile brought it down. I ordered the fresh recruits onto the Skyranger and to the crash site.

Operation Leather Diplomacy

: "Alright soldiers, your mission is simple: eliminate any remaining alien forces. We're not sure what they look like or what their capabilities are, so stay alert."
"What about taking some of them alive, sir?"
"Unfortunately the shipment of stun weapons has not arrived yet and the containment facility is still under construction. If they surrender, take them along. Otherwise, shoot to kill."
"Roger that. Okay people, look alive! File out and spread out!"

"I think I see something..."

"Holy shit! It's an actual alien! It looks like it's carrying something, might be a weapon. I'm going to try to communicate.
HELLO THERE! WE COME IN PEACE!"

"An alien? Where? I wanna see!"

"OW! Fuck, it shot me! Returning fire!"

: "Redshirt, what happened? Redshirt, respond!"
"It's okay, sir! Just grazed me. I missed him, though I can still see him."
: "Soldiers, you are clear to engage. Eliminate with extreme prejudice."

"Moving around to flank."

"That how done."
"Lucky shot, grumble grumble...wait, was that it?"

That was it. The UFO had been almost completely disintegrated in the crash, and we found little of value. Our scientists believe that it was a minor miracle that the single alien survived.

Redshirt received a promotion for getting wounded in action, while Cirno picked up X-COM's very first kill and a promotion as well.

We have irrefutable proof. Aliens are here. The only question is, what are we going to do about it?

So basically, it's "deal with" as in "deal with it". Simple.

I never knew this before, but it appears the area north of Sacramento is a bit of a conservative, slightly fundie haven. Everyone is watching FOX News as some talking head claims that the poor have it too easy and compares Obama to Caligula. Not since traveling through Texas have I seen so many FSTDT-worthy road-side signs ("Kick Obama out", "Illegal President", "Benghazi", "God's Wrath Soon", etc).

Oooh, 4e. Very nice choice.
Nyeeeen, hate to be that guy, but 4e's always made me roll my eyes. It just seems... awful.
4e is very good at what it was designed for; simulating fantasy combat in a fun, streamlined, and easily accessible way. As a game, though, it really isn't concerned with anything beyond combat, nor does it handle those things in a comprehensive way. I for one really miss the survival and weather elements present in earlier editions, the diplomatic and skill-oriented focus found in other game systems, and the general breadth and depth of the simulation itself. That said, I think 4e is one of the premier cinematic fantasy combat RPGs out there... and to say otherwise would be disingenuous.
4e holds a special place in my heart because it was my first tabletop game and what my first gaming group focused on. Problem was, when we threw a quick character together for me to use we accidentally used a 3.5 generator, and thus my paladin could only hit things with his warhammer and be a wall.

It wasn't until we hit level 10 and everyone started on their Paragon classes that the mistake was realized, and I got to remake my paladin for 4e. Not only did his stats get better, but he gained all sorts of awesome powers and abilities that made him a star member of the team (where, again, previously all he could really do was tank).

I've since played and enjoyed 3.5, and I've read up on other systems that look fun. But I will never forget 4e.

Good bye, Bay Area. I'm back on cross-country duty until next winter, probably :(

Hold still, prepare for battle!

So. Sometime earlier today, while I was sitting around, I got dropped from this dedicated route I had been doing. No one thought to tell me. I then get assigned to go pick up a trailer from another driver. Again, not one peep. And now it is 9 at night, I head back to the truck for some shut-eye, and ONLY NOW do I discover all that has happened.

Everyone in the goddamn company has my phone number, yet not one person thought to let me know anything. Boss didn't call to say so much as a good-bye-good-luck. I could have been on my way hours ago, or maybe this is all a mistake and it could have been fixed hours ago. It's too late now though! Everyone who could answer my questions or find out what the hell happened has gone to bed, so now my only option is to do what I can tonight and try to get some answers tomorrow. And I will be getting some goddamn answers.

FLING Javelin at Swordmaster F!

Aaaand with that we have our first 8 poor bastards! Like I said, I'm gonna be waiting until tomorrow to update in the hopes that more sign up. The first thing I tend to do in my games is at least double the roster, because I tend to need them before long :P

19663
Yeah, looks like Japan is gonna win this time. Don't worry if you wanted the base in Europe or whatnot, we can always build additional bases elsewhere.

And that's six (damn ninjas)! Gonna let this sit overnight to (hopefully) build up a bit of a reserve and we'll start tomorrow after work.

19664
I'm on the list! A little far down, but there I am! You even pronounced my name properly \o/
Thanks for running this, Aavak, thanks to all the donators, and a big thank you to choppy for nominating me :3

19665
I'll be doing the first update once we have enough soldiers to fill out at least the initial roster. Keep in mind that the "initial roster" is 8 soldiers, and I'll be recruiting more almost immediately. If we're lucky we'll only have about 25% casualties on the first mission.
