That could be it. I'm also debating making it so that she needs to earn her last name through some sort of deed, a little like some real-world cultures.

It could be like OOTS where, just as you're about to get plotkilled, you pull out the last name and it saves you.

Since my character in the first game was a noble (though he wasn't intended to be, it just sorta happened), I figure the best way to avoid it this time is to have my character and her family be so lowly-ranked on the social hierarchy that they don't even have last names.

They shuffle randomly every half-hour, but there's still some I see more than others.
