So those truckers with the big United on the side of their trailers that come off I-95 to stop at the local Wendy's and take up all the parking spots aren't supposed to do that huh?  Learn something new every day.

There's an invention idea for you though.  A tiny little one person supercompact electric minicar between the truck and the trailer, that when parked can be deployed out from the truck to let you drive around to find a parking spot at a local Houligan's while yer partner is stuck watching the truck at the truck stop.

It's genius!  I'll let you submit it to the proper folks, I would just like 2% of the profits.
Unless the Wendy's is part of a truck stop and the parking spaces are 70 feet long, probably not.

In between the tractor and trailer is where the air lines, electrical cable, and catwalk go, and that space gets awfully cramped when you have to jacknife your trailer. They won't even allow you to stick a bicycle back there. Nice idea though :P

The draw for me is that it seems like a decently paying job that doesn't have very high requirements other than the ability to drive a truck and pay attention to the road for long periods of time.
Trust me when I say there's much more than that, just like with any job. Driving a 40+ ton, 60-foot-long vehicle for any length of time can be stressful, especially in heavy traffic or on narrow city streets. That length and weight, combined with the pivot point where the tractor and trailer meet, makes a truck radically different to maneuver than a standard car. You have to deal with an incredible number of people who seem to think such vehicle is perfectly capable of stopping and turning on a dime and will act accordingly.

While you're not expected to know how to take apart the engine, and some companies do more work on their vehicles than others, you still have to know how to identify problems and perform basic maintenance. A breakdown can leave you stranded for a week or more, and you often don't get paid for that time. If you get inspected by the DoT and they find a problem, you can not only put you out of service until fixed but also charge a huge fine.

As MrSparky said, your opportunities for entertainment can be limited. You will likely be limited to whatever truck stop you rest at for the night and whatever is in walking distance, since a tractor/trailer is often banned from parking elsewhere unless broken down and a lot of parking lots aren't built to accommodate trucks anyway. Your living quarters are smaller than the average restroom and have no facilities of their own, so that can be another problem if you have a phobia of public bathrooms.

ALL THAT SAID, I'm still enjoying it for the most part and you might too. Just trying to show that it isn't all about cruising the freeways at 70 miles per hour :P

Trucking sounds boring to me :c
It's not for everyone :/

Sirus, you're making me want to get a job as a trucker.

Sirus, stahp.
I would have done so years ago, if not for my kid.
You'd be surprised. A number of truckers have families waiting for them at home. A good number of them take more local routes, delivering to the same places every week and being home weekly or even daily.

Of course, that means that you don't get to see the country, which is probably the main draw of this career.

That's pretty much all I can do :P

I feel kinda bad about it, but the 70 hour limit is federal law and electronically tracked, so I'm in no rush to try and work around it.

Besides, gays and lesbians can have children if they want. One of my mother's friends is a lesbian, and she and her partner have had two kids.

Somehow I hit my limit of 70 hours on-duty in about five days O_o
Basically, I can't drive (or do anything, really) at all today.

We're at 7 billion+ at the moment, I don't think the human species is in danger of dying from underpopulation any time soon.

I'd laugh if I found out that some company paid to access my Facebook page. It's almost entirely blank and hasn't seen activity for two years now, since shortly after it was created.

I was thinking Valor could have a go with his Killing Edge, but Tantallos could do it too. At least we'll get one guaranteed hit on the berserker, so best make it count.

Them sleep staffs, man. Pain in the ass.

Best of luck to ya, Vector! Sounds like just the kind of thing you need!

Minor work-related happy: Today I successfully docked at a store that had such a notoriously bad run-up that students (like myself) are usually told to get out of the driver's seat and let the trainer take over (sure I still needed his instructions but I was behind the wheel the whole time). I also found out that in the past two days I have driven over 1000 miles with an average mileage of nearly 8.5 miles per gallon. That's terrible compared to a hybrid car, but amazing when it comes to vehicles like these.

I think my dad is actually jealous of my job :o
I told him I'll be in Washington today and he started complaining about being stuck in his office. Or maybe he's just providing encouragement.
He's just looking forward to Bring Your Father To Work Day ;)
It would be more like Bring Your Father to Work Week, but that could actually be a thing. Just need to get a passenger permit.
