Pondering on dwarven physics.
For example, the unit of energy would be the alcojoule; the unit of force would be the Urist*. O_o
Perhaps the unit of time is the tick and that of length is the natural meter(ie, a tile's width). Volume would have its own special law, the Law of Quantum Space, which states that volume defies all attempts to be quantified, no matter what you do. :D

*Not to be confused with the unit of temperature, the Urist°.

Every measurement can be made in the Urist. On top of that, they're all the same Urist.
"Urist! How much does that boulder weigh?"
"Oh, about 453 Urist. It's bloody heavy."
"What's the temperature outside?"
"About 10,060 Urist. Nice and cool."
"How tall is that wall?"
"How the bloody hell should I know? I can't see the top of it!"
"Urist! How many urist does a beam 20 urist long weigh at a tempature of 50 Urist at a pressure of 5 Urist?"
What's it made out of?

In addition to unjustified accusations against my cat, I found a great web comic last night, and almost caught up... but now the website does not load, and it is gone.
What comic was it?

In the name of the gun. http://www.jesuschriststory.com/ hilariously irreverent.
Hopefully just a temporary issue. I really want to see what happens next  :-\
It's back  :D
Huh, that was REALLY temporary.
No downed server can stay the might of ACTION CHRIST!
It's back? FUCK YEAH
Now I'm sad because I'm already all caught up :(

Start teaching her the art of face-punching. That should wear her out.

You do understand that the sides of that pool are colored blue, and the water is transparent, right?
I couldn't find any images of the pool when empty (not surprisingly, considering how much water is in that thing) and I'm tired of idle speculation, so I decided to just look it up:

Water is weakly blue, more apparent with larger quantities. Impurities and ambient colors (like the sky) can change what it looks like.

This was still early-game. Like, turn 35. I had been focusing my research on stuff like cruiser construction (better ships and better industry) and lightning emitters (because every other game so far has come up against those swarming enemies and I wanted to be prepared) and my researchers were constantly going over-budget. Point Defense in particular took four turns longer than it needed to.

Point is, eight destroyers of various types (all armed with standard gauss) went up against six Von Neumann probes and only two survived.

***********************

Oh, and my newest colony survived a single turn before it got hit by "slavers" and wiped out. This game is totally different than just about every other 4X I've played O_o

it is because it is reflecting an image of the sky (which happens to be blue) rather than because it absorbs all other wavelengths of light, for the same reason that we don't say that a mirror is blue when we lay it on the ground outside. A colored tint underwater is due to light which is refracted rather than reflected.

I'd give up trying to conquer ANY sort of colony with only gauss, those MWMs the independent colonies have WILL overwhelm your point defense.
As I've discovered. Three ships made it out mostly intact.

Also, yeah Herald sucks, but you can easily fight off Von Neumann with gauss if you have mass drivers and ap rounds. Though, if you don't have at LEAST mass drivers, why the hell are you doing ANYTHING but exploring and settling in the first place?
It's not like I had a choice in this matter! Damn thing showed up at my homeworld, just like the Herald.

I swear this game seems to delight in throwing my ships into the grinder -_-;

So I have two independent colonies near my homeworld. As soon as I get the proper tech, I build a fleet in order to glass the surfaces bring peace to those worlds. What shows up at my homeworld the very same turn the fleet is finished? The Herald. He sticks around outside of planetary missile range, preaching doom and gloom to the populace. I'm not gonna have any of that, so I send the fleet in to engage. The Herald sends two ships at me, and I target those instead.

Those two ships wipe out my entire fleet with incredibly advanced weapons while I'm running around with gauss drivers. If it weren't for the fact that the battle took place close enough to the planet that the defense silos managed to keep up a constant barrage, I wouldn't have destroyed either of them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

EDIT: Oh freaking hell.
After the Herald left, I built up a new fleet. Guess what shows up, and again on the same turn the fleet finishes?
Von Neumann machine. Did I mention that I'm still at gauss drivers and half the fleet is made of point-defense vessels? Because I am, and those are nearly useless here.
Six probes in the first wave. They fly in, those goddamn beams of their brush aside the few missiles I could muster against them. Their armor might as well be impervious to the slow-firing gauss drivers of my ships, and all six probes disintegrate a destroyer each before flying back to the mothership. The mothership constructs a whole new mothership, but thankfully they all decide to leave after that. Game calls it a victory. Yeah right!

If you guys can get inside before the cavaliers catch up/kill you all, Gregor will be able to hold them. Soldiers have an innate advantage against mounted units :D

Know the sad thing about the Foundry?  The missions with the highest rankings are often higher quality than the game's own quests and are significantly more creative.
I think that's true of most games that have user-made content :P

See: every Bethesda game ever, Cortex Command, Obsidian games, Source engine mods, MUGEN, etc etc etc...
Spore: GA...
Never picked up GA, but I wouldn't be surprised. And don't forget that a number of user-made ships, buildings, creatures etc were better than the ones Maxis came up with.
