Wut? If the ion blast hits the shields, the shields are weakened/go down for about eight seconds. However, in four seconds another blast is launched. This will either hit whatever you have targeted or continue wearing down the shields. If you keep the blast constantly hitting the shield room, they're defenseless (other than evasion).

Timing isn't as important when the enemy's shields are constantly disabled :P

Hmmm. Does this mean that the first pokemon you encounter could possibly be a level 2 Mew?
It is possible! However, it would be nigh-impossible to catch. Each Pokemon's "catch rate" remains the same as a normal game, and the wimpy Pokeballs we get at first have the lowest odds.

I NEVER use Auto-fire. I have never been in a situation where it was even a good idea.
Well, if you have an Ion Blast II...

That thing fires off every four seconds by default. Best thing to do with it is point it towards a vital system (I mostly point it towards weapons) and let it do it's thing.

Make sure the levels are randomised as well for extra !!FUN!!.
Doesn't fall within the scope of the mod :(
Early routes will be filled with levels 2 and 3 Pokemon. Yes, this can include legendaries.

SignAvatar is back up! Huzzah!

Play With Your Buddies / Random Emerald Nuzlocke LP! Tragedy!
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:40:11 am »
So yeah, everyone likes Pokemon Let's Plays. Everyone likes Nuzlocke runs. So I started thinking to myself "How can I make this more interesting?"

I'll allow this incredibly shoddy Paint image to explain it for me:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
WTF is this?!
This, gentle reader, is my newest project! See, a while back I downloaded a special program for Emerald version. This program, aside from allowing the user (that's me, folks) to choose which starters are available, could also randomize the Pokemon found in each area of the entire game. So I was fooling around with that, and recently began reading up on this whole "Nuzlocke" thing. Suddenly my mind put two and two together, and presto! The idea for this LP.

Holy crapzors! So EVERYTHING is random?
Well...not quite. For one thing, trainer rosters are untouched. This will take away some of the mystery for those who've played Emerald before. On the other hand, I won't be able to rely on finding a Pokemon with a type advantage to battle them with...which should help keep things extra interesting.
It must also be noted that event Pokemon remain the same (so we'll still be saving Birch from a puny Zigzagoon) and the levels remain consistent with what would normally be found on each route.
Other than that...it's totally up in the air.

So what are the rules for this?
Well, the two basic, immutable rules of a Nuzlocke run seem to be:
  • If a Pokemon faints, it is "dead". It must be either released or stored in a special box on the PC, and may never be revived.
  • You may only capture the first Pokemon you meet on each route. If it faints or escapes, tough luck.
Some people include additional rules for an extra challenge, but I think I will leave it at those for two reasons: One, I've never done a "hard mode" run before; and Two, depending on what we find in the wild and our starter, the going may well be difficult enough as is. Some Pokemon are nearly impossible to catch with a regular Pokeball, even at level 2 or so. On the bright side, we probably won't need a "no repeats" rule, as the mod supposedly ensures that all 386 Pokemon get a slot in the wild before they can be used again.

This really isn't true, especially on easy.
You clearly haven't seen how badly things can go on a bad run. If you're constantly repairing damage and upgrading what little you can, you aren't going to have scrap left over for better weapons or new systems.

Quote
No, because you never have more than two vital rooms (engine and pilot if you're trying to run away).  Fire is trivial to deal with, breaches aren't that bad and if they're really giving you trouble upgrade your oxygen system by one.
That makes no sense. If either piloting or engines go down, you can't run or evade, so losing the other just means more to repair. I'm talking lost engines/cockpit, lost shields/cloak, and lost weapons all at the same time. No engines, shields or cloak, you lose a massive part of your defense. Lose weapons, and you can't fight back or even try to slow the enemy down. If you also lose oxygen or doors, that's just additional fun. Lose everything more-or-less at the same time? You can't even open the airlocks to simply vent your crew and save time. This can and has happened to me at any point in the game.

Quote
This isn't true also.  I presume you're talking about an automated ship there, it would have its engines and possibly drones powered right down.  In any case by the time you're fighting enemies that strong you should have enough power that you can juggle yourself to near full capacity.
Honestly I'm starting to wonder if you're even playing the same version I am. Ion storms always mean a difficult fight for me, because I'm semi-crippled and usually losing oxygen while the enemy never seems to be.

So how many of us learned the hard way which lever is the front brake on a bike with the assistance of a steep hill?  :P
That's why you make damn sure which is which before even buying the thing :P

If your backup is on a flash drive you use frequently, back it up onto something else. Flash drives degrade pretty quickly in my experience, especially from heavy use.

Must be the dozens of runs when I couldn't afford anything thanks to constant damage from crappy evasion rolls
Don't waste money repairing too much of it
If I don't, I die. Or if I buy a new weapon/system, I can't afford the power to use it. In bad runs, there's no good option.

Quote
Must be the battles where the very first hit from an enemy wipes out my weapons, leaving me incapable of fighting back.
Fix them
Right, because repairs are instant and the enemy will sit tight and wait for me to recover. You've never had three vital rooms knocked out and on fire/breached at the same time, have you?

Quote
Or the runs where I had no choice but to pass through a hazard which proceeded to disable half of my systems while simultaneously dealing with boarding parties and high-level ships.
Pause, reroute your power.  Ion storms really tend to hit your opponent harder than they hit you, because they don't have the brains required to prioritize the correct systems (I have been attacked by ships with no functioning weapons in ion storms before).  You may have to turn off your oxygen or engines temporarily, but the fact is your opponent will not be functioning at full capacity either, so you will be able to knock out their weapons and deal with boarders in the normal door-related ways.
Oddly enough, I've never seen an ion storm where the enemy wasn't at full strength. When I mentioned four weapons, shields, and cloaks earlier, I wasn't exaggerating. That's something I've fought in an ion storm. They're never any weaker than ships outside the storm, and in some cases stronger.
