« on: October 12, 2012, 03:12:49 pm »Noooo, I'm pretty sure the one that turns into a crystal is the Outsider. I have an Ethereal corpse being dissected right now.Because the Etherials don't have a body exactly. They don't have nerves or muscles to overwhelm. No ethereals definitely have a physical body, you might be thinking about an outsider though
They are the equivilant of a Forcefield generator projecting a humanoid form.
It is definately the one that stunsSpoiler (click to show/hide)
Which is the Etherial.
Speaking of, the mission went fine. I accidentally killed the Ethereal with a flushing shot (it critted on a 10% chance, damn it), but we took no losses.

When they first asked me to stun one I was like "What?"
@ Zangi: I have smoke grenades and the arc thrower...that's about it, really. I think I may be screwed

I think my bad dreams were slightly prophetic
I lost two of my best Heavies on a cargo UFO mission. We faced at least 10 heavy floaters, two sectoid commanders, and a new enemy called a heavy/elite muton.
Casualties:
Every person wounded at least once, except for 'Combo', a support/psi user.
The unnamed heavy who went on the base assault, now a Major named 'Try Again'. Killed by one of the heavy floaters when they were attacking nonstop.
And in the final rounds of the battle, we lost 'Grande'. The heavy who has been with me throughout the entire game went down fighting two of these new Mutons at the same time. We captured his killer though, and we intend to be very strict with it...

I had some nasty XCOM dreams last night <_<;
My favorite squad members died over and over again, and I fought Ethereals that I'm guessing are nothing like the actual enemy in the game. In my dream, they would turn invisible, raising their odds to hit so high that even point-blank shotgun fire was likely to miss. In the unlikely event of a hit, they "possessed" a random bit of trash to avoid the damage anyway. And they could psionically slice my soldiers in half, killing even Colonels in Titan Armor with a single hit - without critting.
Basically, they were more like murderous ghosts than anything else.

I rushed armor, so I still had laser weapons before facing Mutons or other nasty things. Hell, I took out the first Sectoid Commander with nothing more advanced than a laser pistol, but everyone had armor.Any thoughts on laser rifles vs armor as a priority?
Well, I did armor as a priority last time and it backfired. The mutons ripped my experienced troopers to shreds because we just couldn't damage them fast enough. The extra HP from armor helped, but not enough. So I think weapons are more important than armor. Once I got Laser weapons I had rookies taking out Mutons, and you'll find that the combination of Laser weapons + Carapace Armor is awesome. I'm going weapons first for my next run, so we'll see how that goes.

I'd like to take a moment of silence to honor Squaddie Halverson.
After his initial stint back when Thin Men were the biggest threat XCOM faced, Halverson was handed a sniper rifle and was unceremoniously tossed back into the reserve after the wounded elites went back in action. Now, history seemed to be repeating itself. Several veterans were wounded after an encounter with Heavy Floater grenades. Poor Honor took two to the face on that mission, and two other squad members, including Hellsing, were wounded. After an Abductor UFO was shot down in Russia, Halverson found himself at the top of the waitlist, and was sent into battle carrying nothing but basic equipment...and an Arc Launcher.
The battle to enter the UFO was fierce. With lasers and plasma and rockets flying every which-way, Halverson calmly waited for his moment to shine.
And then the moment came. Two Heavy Floaters soared in through a hole in the roof. One landed right next to Halverson. A barrage of firepower killed one and knocked the one next to Halverson to just a single HP. He was too close to use his sniper rifle, and even at that close range I didn't trust his pistol odds. So he calmly took out his stunner, noticed that he only had a 70% chance to pull this off...and pulled the trigger. The alien fell to the floor, twitching and unconscious.
But before he could celebrate his victory, before any of the seasoned elites could praise him...plasma fire gunned him down just a fraction of a second later. None of the other soldiers were in a position to see the shooter, and they were shocked by how quickly his life took a turn for the worse.
Squaddie Halverson marched into battle against things that would break a common man. He witnessed mind powers and weapons great enough to destroy tanks. He stood nose-to-nose with a cybernetically-rebuilt, rage-filled monster from beyond the stars, and took it down. He never, ever panicked.
Never forget. ( '.')7

« on: October 12, 2012, 01:48:22 am »As some random rookie of xcom, I suggest waiting till the last few days before the Council makes their report to make the decision on placing the satellite. It takes a few days for the satellite to get into orbit properly. If IronyOwl waits too long, it won't be up in time.

Well, this is something new. Giant UFO flying around over China, transmitting something. Sadly, the only aircraft I have in Asia are missile-armed Interceptors, and they need to pull out after a hit or two. I have plasma-armed Interceptors in Africa and Europe, but not enough alloys to build either more plasma cannons or the Firestorm.
ETA: What the-?!
Bastards shot down my satellite! I even had the stealth satellite upgrade! Now China's on the verge of pulling out entirely!

You remember Hellsing, right? British sniper, first Major in this game, probably my deadliest soldier who's finally getting equipment to match?
His psionic test results came back. He has the gift. The first human known with the will and brainpower to affect the material universe with his mind.
Has he reached gamebreaker status yet?
Not quite "Sid Meier" yet, but close
Besides, Sid Meier is a Support. Hellsing is a Sniper who's designed from the ground up to commit murder at long range.
