All I have to say is this: Soft sci-fi can go fuck itself. Except Doctor Who. Doctor who is the only soft sci-fi I can watch without wanting to find something to bash my head off of on the grounds that it would actually hurt less than watching Star Trek or anything like that.
Jeez, dude. Pretty harsh statements there :o

That's a failing of lots of sci-fi, not just Star Wars though :P

He also had so many children that there's a not-insignificant chance that you are a descendant of his :P

Good Lord I love having Star Wars debates, it almost never happens :D

1: I'd have to check my source book, but I believe it only took a single one of the Vong's gravity manipulators (though a larger-than-normal one) to bring down a moon. The Death Star might be able to resist a few of them, but it's rate of acceleration was abysmal compared to other Star Wars craft. Put enough gravity manipulators on it and not only would it fall, but they might even be able to keep it pointed away from the planet in question.
2: I can't recall in any instance in the series of the Death Star's main weapon being used on a gas giant. Would the Death Star be able to prevent itself from being destroyed by one of those? Upscaling further, there's no chance in hell of the beam having any effect on a star.
3: Big ships have a bad time with asteroid fields. I recall a moment in Episode V where the bridge of a Star Destroyer takes a direct hit from a space rock, and the ship's captain's image disappears from the conference in the next scene. Clearly something bad happened there.

A defense that can fire in one specific direction, remember? :P

I'm not saying it would be easy, I'm just saying that not even the Death Star could survive getting pushed into a planet.

Do you know what happened after the Star Wars films? The galaxy was invaded by the Yuzhong Vong, a race that gains its millitary power from rapidly terraforming planets.

And what were the Death Stars designed to do? Blow up planets. Palpatine was preparing to stop an intergalactic invasion and the terrorist rebel scum doomed the entire galaxy.
Of course I know :P
I also know that the Yuzhong Vong were capable of causing moons to crash into planets. Now, how big was the Death Star again...?
So? There is an anti-planet lazer on the Death Star. If someone launches a moon at it they can just blow it up.
Not what I meant. They could cause the Death Star to crash into a planet. Having a gigantic planet-busting laser running around (or even several of them) would simply give the Vong bigger and more stationary targets.

He also wasn't making the galaxy safe for anyone. he was actively building things to blow up entire planets, at least twice that we know about. :P Also he used that crap to blow up an entire planet of humans. :)
Well the idea behind the death star was ensure stability by making sure every planet was too afraid to rebel for fear of being blown up. It was basically the distant past-future equivalent of a nuclear weapon, but he knew he had to use it at least once, and he chose Corruscant as an example because that way everyone would know he meant business. It might well have worked had those extremists not decided to do a suicide run and blow up the single largest economic investment the empire had ever made.

True, the reason the Emperor was doing this was to make sure he stayed in power and in control (Sith lords have a crazy obsession with power and control), but along the way he was bringing safety and stability to the galaxy...

There may be some flaws here, but there is a bit of an argument to be made that the rebels were the bad guys all along.
Pretty sure you meant Alderaan there. Coruscant was the Imperial Capital; blowing it up would get rid of some of his strongest supporters :P

And again, safety and stability (maybe) FOR HUMANS, screw everything else and turn them into slave labor. I can't condone Palpatine's actions.

The Hutts? Dude, Star wars has an shortage of women and an abundance of bounty hunters. There's gotta be an easier, cheaper, better way of killing Jabba. Hell, he probably eats like a horse, like a particularly fat elephant. Poison, undercooked food (salt?), man, Leia manages to kill him herself while chained up.... Sluggo McSluggerson over there was never palpatine's goal or if he was, then why did he never get around to it? :P
The Hutts, or at least the ones like Jabba, were heads of organized crime syndicates. They would be hard to get rid of, wouldn't go down without a fight, and contributed large sums of money into the local governor's pockets. Basically, it's like how the mob still operates today.
And at least one person was actively poisoning Jabba at the time of his death. He's just very very tough :P

If you can make it good or go to a decent restaurant, pizza is amazing. Even chain restaurants like Round Table can be amazing, depending on how good the people working there are.

Problem was the Emperor was making the galaxy safe for humans by trampling on the rights of just about every other sentient species out there. He also approved of mass terror tactics; he once gave a dude a promotion for landing his freaking Star Destroyer on a group of peaceful protesters.
