I think I found a solution!

While trying to come up with a way to help our trapped friend, I found a Scroll of Comprehend Languages that I had made some time back. If I activate it, I will be able to read those runes...unless by being transferred through the scroll, they become "magic writing", in which case it won't work.

Mr. Acter, you made these things. Have you experimented with using magic on writing transferred from one scroll to another?

Considering the low-magic setting, and how the Vikings were more raiders than conquerors, I wouldn't mind dealing with plots and intrigues in the homeland every so often. I'm fine with raiding, as long as things are mixed up every so often so we're not just ransacking villages of helpless commoners.

I wouldn't be opposed to trying a bit of mass combat, though I've never really messed with it before.
