Meh, it actually didn't have nearly as much content as I would have expected from a clicker. Eventually you run out of things to research and a bunch of stuff has no actual use. It's very clearly an alpha.

Nothing will beat the Platypus. It has venomous talons! How many other mammals/marsupials do you know that have venomous talons?! Exactly.

The reason it looks so bizarre is that the entire animal kingdom has given it tribute.

Y'all are wrong. Saitama just does the hero thing as a hobby. He does want money and fans, but he doesn't want them super intensely. He doesn't want anything super intensely in fact, his character is largely about ennui (and isolation) so looking too hard for driving motivations is an inherently misguided method of analyzing the work.

He did do the C-class which was a lot of work... you don't really go through that unless you REALLY want to.
REALLY want to or REALLY need the money. A lot of C-class heroes (Mumen/Licenseless Rider the obvious exception) seem to treat crimefighting as a combination of job and PR opportunity.

Does anyone mind if I promote this turn, or should I keep up my guard duties?

Take One-Punch Man as a counter-example. The main character, while occasionally displaying genuine heroism, is primarily in it for two reasons: fame & fortune, and the hope of eventually having a real, no-holds-barred battle.

I'm uh... I'm not sure you're remembering OPM correctly. Saitama genuinely doesn't care about his own personal fame or fortune. Heck, there's several scenes where he allows other heroes to take all the credit for his deeds. Heck, there's one scene where he's publicly ostracized and he tells them all off. HECK, the fact that he doesn't care about fortune or fame is in the lyrics of the opening song. Saitama's motivation is vaguely good, in that he defeats villains and saves people, but he mostly just wants to meet a challenge that is actually, you know, a challenge. It's hard to say how much he actually cares about saving people's lives, because his actions inadvertently kill a lot of people in more than one scenario, which could have been avoided had he simply been more careful with his outrageously overpowered punches.
Dude, he joined the Hero Association for the sole reason that he wasn't getting recognition for his deeds. While he's willing to sacrifice credit and his own reputation when he feels others deserve it more, you can't deny that Saitama desires fame...if only to try and fill the void inside him caused by lack of excitement. Otherwise he would have stayed an anonymous weird dude in a costume.

In "Kingdom of Loathing" those are called Oxygenarians.  If it's a thing in real life, I'm unaware.
Though I did hear from my dad about hippies who supposedly only ate "live" vegetables, and were able to reclaim water from their urine.

The 60's were kinda fucked.  Sometimes in good ways, often not.
Look up Breatharians for one real-life example. Those folks are/were nuts.

Water isn't particularly abundant in space.

O_o
Guessing hector meant "outer space". Obviously water is actually pretty abundant in the universe as a whole, but not in Earth orbit.

Roughly how far along is it? I'd like to keep the manga plot ahead of the anime plot.
It's in the middle of its second season. The TOOOOUUURNAMENT AAAAAAAAARC!!!! concluded a few episodes ago and from what I hear it's considered to be one of the best tournament arcs in anime.
Okay, so I'm not caught up yet. I think I'm just barely beginning the "Tournament Arc" in the manga.

Might go ahead and start the first season, if only because I want to see All Might in action :P

Well sure, but that's already obvious and kinda to be expected. You've already got a few heroes (like Ms. Mount or whatever her name is...that growing woman) that are clearly mostly in the business for prestige. But the majority of the main cast have decent enough motives, which is refreshing for me. The main kid just wants to be a hero; the "why" isn't obvious yet, but so far he's mostly just a selfless kid that wants to save people even at the cost of his bones. His probable love interest *is* trying to get money...but the money is to support her family, which isn't the worst motivation. Their friend, the speedster, wants to continue the family tradition of hero-work and has been shown to be quite caring of his fellow students.

Take One-Punch Man as a counter-example. The main character, while occasionally displaying genuine heroism, is primarily in it for two reasons: fame & fortune, and the hope of eventually having a real, no-holds-barred battle. His disciple in the beginning was all about the pursuit of vengeance (he's mellowed out a bit since then). The vast majority of low-ranking heroes - and more than a few of the high-ranked ones - are clearly in it for the money, many fleeing from danger unless they are either cornered or convinced they can handle whatever the danger is. I'm certain there are more examples.

Now, I do like OPM quite a lot, but at the moment I'm enjoying MHA for somewhat different reasons. It feels a bit more...pure, I guess.

So I decided to start reading My Hero Academia, or whatever the heck it's called.

I like it, so far. Seems that superpower plots with genuine, caring heroes are becoming somewhat rare nowadays. Everyone has dark secrets or twisted motives, everyone's gotta angst, the idols everyone looks up to are frauds, etc. That sort of thing is fine, but the heroes in this manga are refreshing in how they act so...heroic. Not all of them, of course - if that Kacchan kid doesn't become a villain at some point I'll be amazed - but most of them. The idol-hero is either an amazing actor or genuinely cares about helping people. One dude has a game-breaking power but uses it primarily in natural disasters or search-and-rescue operations instead of battle. The teachers put their lives on the line to protect their students. The students (Kacchan excepted) support and assist each other. It's nice.

I'll probably start watching the anime before long, especially since I hear it's got a quality English dub. Roughly how far along is it? I'd like to keep the manga plot ahead of the anime plot.
